Google Android have partnered up with Apps World Africa to host a range of free to attend tracks called ‘Droid World’ for android developers at the event on the 1-2 June in Cape Town.
The developer tracks, in partnership with local android developer Afrozaar will run a series of workshops for android developers, and coincide with the launch of the the Android Developer Challenge for Sub-Saharan Africa. The competition will open for entries from across Africa on the the same day, 1 June.
Android Developer Challenge initiative aims to encourage innovative app design across Sub-Saharan Africa challenges developers to create apps in one of three categories. “In the past year alone, we have met with over 10,000 developers and techies across Sub Saharan Africa,” said Bridgette Sexton, Google’s Program Manager Developer & Tech Outreach, Africa. “We are continually impressed by the ingenuity and enthusiasm of this community in solving real problems with technology.”
Handheld devices have taken centre stage for consumers and developers in Africa, she added. With a number of countries in the region hovering around 80-90% mobile penetration, mobile is the screen size for the web and the communication experience.
