Nigeria Criminalizes Use of Twitter: Government To Prosecute Violators

Nigeria banned Twitter and also directed the telcos to immediately cut-off the microblogging platform from the Nigerian telecom systems. Now, the Attorney General has brought the law to execute the deal: “Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice… to swing into action and commence in earnest the process of prosecution of violators of the Federal Government De-activation of operations of Twitter in Nigeria.”

While we do not know yet if this statement is directed to the telcos, sim card sellers, laptop or phone sellers, or ordinary Twitter users, what is evident here is that very soon, the Police can round people up for violating the Twitter ban policy.

So, it is now illegal to use Twitter in Nigeria. Nigerian democracy in action. People, elections have consequences.
