SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: Obaseki and Ize-Iyamu as Candidates of Two Parties in Two Elections

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu was the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party in 2016 while Mr. Godwin Obaseki was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the same year. In 2020, Pastor Ize-Iyamu is the flagbearer of the APC, while Mr Obaseki emerged as the candidate of the PDP after leaving his first political party (APC) when it was clear that it would be difficult to have the APC’s ticket due to leadership tussle with his erstwhile party chairman, Mr. Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole. During the two elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced Mr. Godwin Obaseki twice as the winner.

However, while Mr Obaseki was announced as the winner in 2016 with the pronouncement that “the candidate of All Progressives Congress…”, it is “the candidate of People’s Democratic Party…” in 2020. The pattern of announcement is not quite different for the pronouncement of Pastor Ize-Iyamu. He was announced as the second runner-up in 2016 and 2020.

In this spot analysis, our analyst wants the public to understand the real difference between the two elections and the candidates. While doing that, attention needs to be paid to Oredo and Etsako West local councils. These are the local councils of Mr Godwin Obaseki and Mr. Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole accordingly.
