Alia Shawkat Clears Up Past Brad Pitt Dating Speculation.
Brad Pitt is not meant for Alia Shawkat. The Arrested Development star clarified the nature of their connection seven years after she and the Formula One star initiated dating speculations.
“He’s just my friend,” on the August 16 broadcast of Watch What Happens Live, Shawkat informed presenter Andy Cohen. “We became friends.”
“Spike Jonze introduced us,” she went on. “It sounds all very chic and Hollywood. But we met, and he’s really into art and he’s very cool and we became friends.”

When Shawkat, 37, and Pitt, 62, were spotted together at the L.A. on Fire art event in Los Angeles in November 2019, relationship rumors began to circulate. Additionally, rumors about their romance were rekindled in 2020 when they were spotted together enjoying a Thundercat performance before going on another public trip at a nearby In-N-Out.
Shawkat can see why people believed the actress from The Wrong Girl and the former cast member of Fight Club were dating, even if their relationship never progressed.
“Everyone thought we were dating,” she clarified, “because if you stand next to him, everyone thinks you’re dating. Like, even his own mother.”
The idea of the two being together actually made Shawkat's grandma very happy.
“My grandmother saved Us Weekly—I was on the cover of it,” Shawkat thought back. “There was a really bad photo, it was him and then me being like, ‘Oh!’ And they were like, ‘Who’s the new girl?’”
Regardless of her professional achievements, Shawkat's grandmother believed she had "made it" at last when she was connected to Pitt. "I was like, 'I've been working in film for 30 years, you've never seen anything, but you love this,'" the Whip It actress said.
The Moneyball star has already addressed the many rumors about Pitt's romantic life, but this is the first time Shawkat has talked about her relationship with him.
“I don’t know how many women they’ve said I’ve been dating the last two or three years,” in 2019, Pitt stated to The New York Times, “and none of its true.”
Pitt, who has been dating Ines de Ramon since 2022, recently revealed a unique glimpse into his private life, stating that he has struck the correct balance in terms of seclusion.
“My life is fairly contained,” in May 2025, he informed GQ. “It feels pretty warm and secure with my friends, with my loves, with my fam, with my knowledge of who I am, that, you know, it's like this fly buzzing around a little bit.”
