2025: A Journey of Purpose and Progress

0

As we step into 2025, the world faces a crossroads defined by rapid technological advancement, shifting geopolitical landscapes, and evolving societal expectations.  Success in this transformative year hinges on purposeful action, data-driven strategies, and a strong commitment to adaptability.

In his hundreds of articles published from January to December 2024, Mutiu Iyanda explored various socio-economic and political themes as well as business-related ones intending to help concerned stakeholders navigate the muddy terrain towards value co-creation and capture.

Iyanda focuses on themes of empowerment through skill acquisition, particularly in the context of social media platforms like Facebook. He advocates for leveraging technology to address socio-technical failures, such as those seen in crowd management during public events.

Drawing from his thought-provoking insights produced in 2024, let us explore what individuals, businesses, and governments must do to thrive in 2025.

For Individuals: Embrace Lifelong Learning and Personal Branding

Imagine a young professional named Amina, navigating the rapid shifts in the global job market. She recognizes that traditional career paths are fading, replaced by a landscape where skills like data analysis, creative problem-solving, and adaptability are non-negotiable. In 2025, Amina will take control of her destiny by enrolling in online courses on AI ethics and renewable energy solutions.

Amina also understands that her brand is her passport to opportunities. She curates her LinkedIn profile to highlight her expertise, shares thoughtful articles, and engages with global communities tackling climate change. She embodies a growth mindset, viewing every setback as a stepping stone. Amina’s journey is a testament to how individuals can turn challenges into growth in 2025.

For Businesses: Foster Innovation and Data-Driven Decision-Making

In the bustling offices of EcoNova, a mid-sized company, the CEO, David, faces mounting pressure to stay ahead in a competitive market. With a clear vision for 2025, David rallies his team to harness the power of data. By analyzing customer preferences and operational inefficiencies, EcoNova launched a line of eco-friendly packaging that boosts revenue and aligns with sustainability goals.

David’s story doesn’t end there. He ensures that his employees are at the heart of the company’s success. Flexible work arrangements, mental health resources, and a focus on inclusion create a thriving workplace culture. When market conditions shift unexpectedly, EcoNova’s culture of innovation enables swift adaptation, solidifying its position as an industry leader.

For Governments: Build Resilient Systems and Foster Public Trust

Across the world in a bustling city, a newly elected mayor named Ifeoma inherits a metropolis plagued by infrastructural decay and public distrust. Ifeoma knows that 2025 is her chance to make a difference. She begins by implementing open governance policies, using digital platforms to share budget allocations and solicit citizen feedback. Trust starts to rebuild as residents see their concerns addressed transparently.

Ifeoma also invests heavily in digital infrastructure, ensuring that every corner of the city has access to affordable internet. She prepares the next generation to thrive in a technology-driven future by promoting digital literacy and equipping schools with modern tools. Ifeoma’s inclusive policies reduce inequities, while her economic diversification strategies attract investors, creating jobs and driving growth.

Collaborative Action for a Better Future

These narratives of Amina, David, and Ifeoma reveal a profound truth: the future of 2025 is not built in isolation. As individuals, businesses, and governments, we are interconnected, and our progress depends on collaboration. Amina’s advocacy for sustainability inspires policies in Ifeoma’s city, while David’s innovations provide tools to support the mayor’s initiatives.

The year 2025 is a canvas awaiting bold strokes of purpose and progress. By embracing lifelong learning, fostering innovation, and strengthening governance, we can collectively create a world where challenges are met with resilience and opportunities are seized with clarity. The question remains: what story will you write in 2025?

Improve Your Personality To Win The Year 2025!

1

First, the HR department is not necessarily established to help you, but to help the company, and support its core missions. The implication is clear: the HR will always vote on its policies and interpretations thereof for the company ahead of you. If no one has told you that, read it from me, because it is important as we move into 2025, to dispel the notion that your workplace is a family union square where everyone gathers and returns home at the end of the day. Nothing like that!

Get your job done and while a great company and its HR can always provide support and help, if the mission does not see a path into the future with you, it has to do what it has to do, irrespective of how you feel. And what does that tell us about work, career and job title?

The greatest career liberation is when your job title and where you work do not define your personality and relationship with people. Titles and workplaces are ephemeral, and if you use both to absolutely relate with people, the day they go, you will become miserable.

Pursue a positive personality with people. Yes, your personality does not expire in the minds of people even when titles and workplaces go. In other words, the only permanent professional “title” we have is our personality, and that is the real deal. Can your co-worker recommend you for an opportunity? Can your classmate invest in a venture you are starting? When those moments come, no one remembers you as the CFO or class treasurer, but who you were via relationships and interactions.

And that takes me to the message: In 2025, I challenge you to improve your professional personality because that is a fountain where you can draw living waters of opportunities when job titles and workplace brands fade. Indeed because people like to do business/work with people who provide positive vibes, and if you make that happen, your professional options will widen.

The year 2025 must work for ALL. Have a GREAT Year 2025.

Politics and Economics of Streaming Nollywood Films on Netflix

0

The rise of digital streaming platforms like Netflix has reshaped the global entertainment landscape, providing unprecedented opportunities for local industries to reach international audiences. For Nollywood, Nigeria’s prolific film industry, Netflix offers a critical gateway to global visibility. However, our analyst notes that a closer look at the streaming dynamics of Nollywood movies reveals the underlying political economy of this relationship, marked by questions of representation, access, and cultural commodification.

Understanding the Landscape

Exhibit 1 illustrates the distribution of selected Nollywood movies on Netflix, highlighting their producers and directors. Names like Moses Inwang, Niyi Akinmolayan, and Oluseyi Obid emerge as dominant figures, with five movies each on the platform. Meanwhile, several others, including Funke Akindele and Kunle Afolayan, hold a smaller but significant presence. This uneven distribution raises critical questions about how content is selected and whose stories are amplified in the global arena.

Market Representation and Inclusion

The dominance of a few producers and directors on Netflix’s Nollywood catalogue suggests a concentration of power and influence. While this might reflect the appeal and production quality of their work, it also hints at barriers to entry for lesser-known filmmakers. In a diverse industry like Nollywood, such concentration could stifle creativity and limit the diversity of narratives presented to global audiences.

Netflix’s selection criteria likely prioritise commercial viability and audience appeal, potentially sidelining experimental or grassroots productions. This poses a challenge for emerging creators, who may struggle to break into the platform’s curated catalogue. To address this imbalance, Netflix and similar platforms should actively seek to diversify their Nollywood offerings, providing equal opportunities for a broader range of voices.

Content Selection and Gatekeeping

As a global streaming giant, Netflix plays the role of a gatekeeper, deciding which Nollywood stories make it to its platform. This curatorial power significantly shapes global perceptions of Nigerian culture. The emphasis on commercially appealing content risks marginalizing narratives that challenge dominant ideologies or delve into less marketable but culturally significant themes.

For instance, the frequent representation of romantic comedies or action-packed dramas might overshadow stories rooted in local traditions, histories, or social issues. This dynamic reflects the broader interplay of cultural hegemony and corporate interests, where market demands often dictate the type of content that receives visibility.

Economic Impact and Power Dynamics

The streaming of Nollywood movies on Netflix undoubtedly generates significant revenue, but it also raises questions about the distribution of economic benefits. Do local creators receive fair compensation for their work, or does Netflix’s global dominance skew financial gains disproportionately in its favour?

Producers and directors with higher representation, such as those mentioned in Exhibit 1, likely possess greater bargaining power. This could lead to an unequal allocation of resources, further entrenching the dominance of established figures while limiting opportunities for emerging talents. Transparent revenue-sharing mechanisms and equitable contracts are essential to ensure that all creators benefit fairly from their inclusion on the platform.

Cultural Commodification

The commodification of Nollywood narratives to fit global streaming preferences is another critical concern. While Netflix’s involvement enhances Nigeria’s cultural visibility, it risks homogenizing the stories told. The prioritization of universally marketable themes over authentic, locally rooted narratives could dilute the richness of Nigerian culture.

For instance, the emphasis on commercially successful genres might lead to the underrepresentation of stories addressing complex social issues, historical events, or indigenous traditions. This tension between cultural authenticity and marketability underscores the need for a balanced approach that respects local storytelling traditions while catering to global audiences.

Global Visibility and Soft Power

On the positive side, Netflix’s streaming of Nollywood movies contributes significantly to Nigeria’s soft power. By showcasing Nigerian talent and storytelling on a global platform, the country strengthens its cultural influence and fosters cross-cultural understanding. However, this visibility must be accompanied by efforts to ensure that the narratives presented are representative of Nigeria’s diversity and complexity.

Policymakers and industry stakeholders have a role to play in negotiating favourable terms with platforms like Netflix. By advocating for policies that protect the interests of local creators, they can ensure that Nollywood’s global expansion benefits all stakeholders, not just a select few.

 Possible Balanced Ecosystem

Netflix should expand its Nollywood catalogue to include works from lesser-known producers and directors. This will promote inclusivity and showcase the full spectrum of Nigerian storytelling. Transparent revenue-sharing agreements and equitable contracts should be established to protect the economic interests of local creators.

Platforms should strike a balance between commercial viability and the representation of authentic, locally rooted narratives. This will help preserve the cultural richness of Nollywood. Initiatives such as grants, workshops, and mentorship programs can help emerging filmmakers gain access to global platforms and audiences.

Nigerian policymakers should collaborate with industry stakeholders to create an enabling environment for local creators. This includes negotiating favourable terms with streaming platforms and supporting capacity-building initiatives.

OpenAI Announces Reason For Transition to For-Profit Organization, Lays Out Plans

0

OpenAI, Artificial Intelligence company and maker of popular chatbot ChatGPT, has officially announced its reasons for transitioning into a for-profit organization, lays out plans.

The company via a post on its website noted that the significant shift in its corporate structure was necessitated to ensure the long-term success of its mission, which is to ensure that Artificial Intelligence (AI) benefits all of humanity.

This transition involves restructuring OpenAl’s existing for-profit arm into a Delaware Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), designed to balance the interests of shareholders, stakeholders, and the broader public. The move reflects the organization’s evolving priorities, focusing on sustainable operations, robust fundraising capabilities, and a renewed commitment to its mission.

OpenAl was founded in 2015 as a non-profit research lab with the ambitious goal of advancing Artificial intelligence in ways most likely to benefit humanity. In its early years, the AI startup operated without commercial revenue, relying on donations and grants to support its work. However, as it became clear that building AGI required massive computational resources and capital, the organization recognized the need for a new approach.

Our stated goal was advancing digital intelligence in the way most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return.” A non-profit structure seemed fitting, and we raised donations in various forms including cash ($137M, less than a third of which was from Elon) and compute credits and discounts ($1.8M from Amazon and $50M or more from each of Azure and Google Cloud)”, the company wrote.

In 2019, OpenAl introduced a unique hybrid structure: a for-profit entity controlled by the non-profit, designed to raise the substantial capital necessary to pursue AGI research while ensuring that profits would flow back to support the non-profit’s mission. This structure facilitated significant investments, including an initial round of over $100 million and a $1 billion partnership with Microsoft.

Over the past decade, OpenAl has transformed from a research lab to a pioneering technology company. The launch of ChatGPT in 2022 brought Al into the hands of millions, showcasing the potential of large language models in everyday life. Today, over 300 million people use OpenAl’s products weekly for learning, productivity, and more.

Recent advancements, including the o-series models introduced in 2024, have demonstrated new reasoning capabilities that further the path toward AGI. Meanwhile, OpenAl’s influence has extended beyond its products, driving innovation across the Al ecosystem and inspiring other organizations to advance Al safety and accessibility.

As OpenAl moves into 2025, the need for significant additional capital has become clear. The Board estimates that hundreds of billions of dollars will be required to develop the infrastructure, compute, and talent necessary for the AGI economy. To attract this level of investment, the organization needs to simplify its structure, making it more appealing to conventional investors. The new plan involves converting OpenAl’s for-profit arm into a Delaware Public Benefit Corporation.

This structure, already adopted by many mission-driven organizations, ensures that OpenAl’s decisions will balance profit motives with its commitment to benefiting humanity. Under the proposed structure, the non-profit arm will remain a cornerstone of OpenAl’s mission. The non-profit will retain significant shares in the newly formed PBC, valued by independent financial advisors, providing it with unprecedented resources to pursue charitable initiatives.

These initiatives will focus on areas such as healthcare, education, and science, furthering the goal of ensuring Al benefits everyone. OpenAl’s mission is no longer confined to building a single AGI system, Instead, it envisions a continuous journey of contributing to the development of a new Al-powered economy. By evolving its structure, OpenAl aims to lead this transformation while ensuring that the benefits of Artificial Intelligence are widely shared.

With this transition, OpenAl is poised to become more than a lab or startup, it is set to emerge as a sustainable, enduring organization committed to advancing Al’s capability, safety, and positive impact on the world.
