Oil Pares Gains As Qatar Pushes U.S.-Iran Diplomacy; Treasury Yields Rise While Gold Steadies On Fed Uncertainty

0

Oil prices surrendered much of their early gains on Tuesday after Qatar said diplomatic efforts to end the five-month U.S.-Iran war were continuing, easing immediate fears of a prolonged disruption to global crude supplies even as attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz kept energy markets on edge.

The mixed trading across oil, gold and U.S. Treasuries is seen as the latest indication that investors remain caught between two powerful forces: persistent geopolitical risks that threaten global energy supplies and expectations that higher oil prices could keep inflation elevated, forcing the Federal Reserve to maintain restrictive monetary policy for longer.

Brent crude rose 17 cents, or 0.2%, to $83.94 a barrel after earlier climbing as high as $86.33. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude slipped 30 cents, or 0.37%, to $80.04 a barrel after reaching an intraday high of $82.33.

Both benchmarks had surged more than 2% earlier in the session as uncertainty surrounding U.S.-Iran negotiations initially boosted risk premiums across energy markets.

Qatar Revives Diplomatic Hopes

The reversal followed comments from Qatar indicating that negotiations aimed at ending the conflict remain active. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari said mediators including Qatar, Pakistan and Oman continue to coordinate closely with both Washington and Tehran, facilitating exchanges of draft proposals designed to achieve a diplomatic breakthrough.

The comments provided investors with renewed optimism that an agreement could eventually reduce geopolitical risks surrounding one of the world’s most strategically important oil-producing regions.

“Oil prices are pairing earlier gains on comments from Qatari officials saying a potential U.S.-Iran resolution has been drafted,” UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo said.

However, he cautioned that the oil market remains fundamentally tight.

“While production in the Middle East has recovered from the lows, it remains below pre-conflict levels, keeping the oil market undersupplied,” he said.

The remarks suggest that even if diplomacy advances, physical supply constraints continue to support crude prices.

Despite diplomatic efforts, shipping disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz continue to inject significant uncertainty into global energy markets. The waterway carries roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil consumption, making any disruption a major concern for refiners, commodity traders and governments.

Recent attacks on commercial shipping have heightened fears that transportation bottlenecks could tighten supplies even if oil production gradually recovers. The continuing instability has also contributed to increased volatility across commodity and financial markets as investors attempt to assess whether geopolitical tensions will escalate further or begin to ease.

Treasury Yields Climb As Fed Outlook Hardens

The uncertain geopolitical backdrop also pushed U.S. Treasury yields higher as investors reassessed inflation and monetary policy expectations.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield rose two basis points to 4.708%, while the 30-year Treasury yield increased two basis points to 5.254%, remaining close to its highest level since 2007.

The two-year Treasury yield, which is particularly sensitive to Federal Reserve policy expectations, edged up to 4.264%.

Bond markets continue to reflect expectations that elevated energy prices could feed into broader inflation, limiting the Federal Reserve’s ability to ease monetary policy.

The recent Federal Open Market Committee meeting reinforced those concerns after policymakers delivered what many investors described as a “hawkish hold,” keeping interest rates unchanged while maintaining a cautious stance toward inflation.

Adding to that message, New York Federal Reserve President John Williams said inflation remains on a gradual path lower but warned that policymakers would not hesitate to raise interest rates again if price pressures fail to moderate.

Interest-rate futures now imply roughly a 63% probability of a Federal Reserve rate increase in September.

Gold Trapped Between Safe-Haven Demand And Higher Yields

Gold prices remained largely range-bound as competing forces offset one another. Spot gold traded little changed at $4,053.40 per ounce, while U.S. gold futures gained 0.6% to $4,114.30.

Investors continue to balance gold’s traditional role as a safe-haven asset during geopolitical crises against the negative impact of higher interest rates, which increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets.

“Gold prices have been stuck in a narrow range over the past few weeks, trading roughly between $4,000 and $4,100, as investors remain uncertain about the Federal Reserve’s interest rate path,” said Ricardo Evangelista, senior analyst at ActivTrades.

“The past 24 hours have done little to change that picture.”

The persistence of the trading range suggests investors remain reluctant to take large positions until there is greater clarity on both U.S. monetary policy and Middle East diplomacy.

But higher oil prices continue to complicate the inflation outlook. Energy costs are a major input across transportation, manufacturing, and consumer goods, meaning sustained increases in crude prices could spill over into broader price pressures.

That dynamic has strengthened expectations that the Federal Reserve may need to keep policy restrictive for longer or even tighten further if inflation accelerates. This week could prove pivotal for those expectations as investors digest several key U.S. labor market reports, including JOLTS job openings, the ADP private employment survey and Friday’s closely watched nonfarm payrolls report.

Strong employment data would reinforce expectations that the U.S. economy remains resilient enough to withstand higher interest rates, potentially strengthening the case for additional monetary tightening.

While gold remained largely unchanged, other precious metals outperformed.

Spot silver rose 1.1% to $58.83 per ounce, platinum advanced 2.2% to $1,663.13, and palladium gained 1.9% to $1,288.32.

The broader strength suggests continued expectations that industrial demand for precious metals will remain resilient despite tighter financial conditions.

HSBC Beats Profit Forecasts, Announces $1bn Share Buyback, Raises Net Interest Income Outlook as Asia Wealth Boom Drives Growth

0

HSBC Holdings reported stronger-than-expected first-half earnings and upgraded its full-year net interest income outlook, as its pivot toward Asia’s wealth management and cross-border banking markets continues to generate robust returns.

Europe’s largest lender posted pre-tax profit of $19.5 billion for the first six months of the year, a 23% increase from $15.8 billion a year earlier and comfortably ahead of analysts’ consensus estimate of $18.9 billion.

The performance caps another strong reporting season for Europe’s banking sector, where lenders have continued to benefit from resilient lending margins, buoyant trading revenues and growing fee-based businesses, helping offset the gradual easing of monetary policy across several major economies.

The results boost HSBC’s long-term strategy of concentrating resources in Asia, particularly Hong Kong and mainland China, where rising household wealth, expanding cross-border financial activity and growing demand for international banking services have strengthened recurring revenue streams.

The bank raised its guidance for 2026 net interest income, saying it now expects to generate more than $46 billion, compared with its previous target of approximately that level.

The improved outlook reflects stronger-than-anticipated lending activity, resilient deposit franchises and continued growth in wealth management, an important earnings driver as Asian households accumulate financial assets.

Chief Executive Georges Elhedery said Hong Kong remains central to HSBC’s long-term expansion strategy.

“Hong Kong remains front and center in the growth of our wealth business in Asia,” Elhedery said during the earnings briefing.

That strategy continued to deliver results, with HSBC and its subsidiary Hang Seng Bank adding approximately 640,000 new customers in Hong Kong during the first half of the year.

Cross-Border Banking Offsets Regulatory Uncertainty

The results also demonstrate HSBC’s ability to navigate regulatory changes in China while maintaining growth. Despite Beijing’s crackdown launched in late May to curb illicit cross-border wealth transfers, HSBC said customer acquisition and account-opening activity have remained largely unaffected.

The resilience suggests that demand for legitimate international wealth management and investment services remains robust despite tighter regulatory scrutiny.

Cross-border banking has become an increasingly important competitive advantage for HSBC, whose extensive international network allows affluent individuals and multinational companies to manage assets and transactions across multiple jurisdictions. Its corporate and institutional banking division benefited significantly from that trend, emerging as the bank’s largest earnings contributor by accounting for roughly one-third of first-half profit.

Growing trade flows, supply-chain diversification and increased capital movement across Asia have boosted demand for treasury services, trade finance, foreign exchange and international cash management, all areas where HSBC maintains a strong market position.

Beyond interest income, the results highlight the growing importance of fee-based businesses in supporting bank profitability. Revenue from wealth management and investment products continued to expand as customers increased allocations to investment products, insurance and private banking services.

Banking institutions are now seeking to reduce reliance on traditional lending income by expanding recurring fee-generating businesses that are less sensitive to interest rate cycles. The same trend was evident at Standard Chartered, which also reported better-than-expected first-half earnings last week on the back of strong fee income growth.

Shareholder Returns Continue

HSBC also announced the resumption of its share repurchase programme after temporarily suspending buybacks while completing the acquisition of the remaining shares in Hang Seng Bank.

The lender unveiled a share buyback programme of up to $1 billion and declared a second interim dividend of $0.10 per share, matching the interim dividend paid in May.

However, the size of the buyback fell short of some investors’ expectations.

Analysts at Citi noted that the programme was below the market consensus estimate of $2.2 billion, raising questions about whether HSBC intends to adopt a more conservative approach to future capital returns.

Investors will likely monitor upcoming quarters for signs of whether the latest programme represents a temporary restart following the Hang Seng transaction or signals a structural reduction in quarterly buybacks.

HSBC’s Hong Kong-listed shares traded little changed following the earnings announcement after earlier reaching a record high of HK$169.50.

IPO Pipeline Remains Healthy

Although HSBC has significantly reduced its presence in the U.S. investment banking market following years of strategic retrenchment, the lender continues to benefit from active capital markets across Asia.

Elhedery said the bank currently has more than 70 initial public offerings in its regional pipeline, including 40 listings in Hong Kong, underscoring expectations that Asia’s equity capital markets will remain active despite persistent geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainty.

A stronger IPO market is expected to provide another source of fee income for HSBC’s investment banking franchise, complementing growth in wealth management and transaction banking.

Looking ahead, HSBC’s upgraded guidance suggests management remains confident that the bank can sustain earnings momentum even as central banks gradually normalize monetary policy.

While lower policy rates generally compress banks’ lending margins over time, HSBC’s diversified earnings mix, particularly its expanding wealth management operations and cross-border corporate banking franchise, provides an important cushion against future declines in net interest margins.

The bank’s strong capital position also leaves room for continued shareholder distributions while supporting investment in strategic growth areas across Asia.

HSBC has undergone a multi-year transformation aimed at concentrating capital on faster-growing Asian markets while scaling back operations in lower-return businesses across Europe and North America. The strategy has centered on wealth management, private banking, commercial banking and cross-border financial services, particularly in Hong Kong, mainland China and Southeast Asia.

The shift comes as Asia continues to generate a growing share of global wealth creation, while multinational corporations increasingly require banking partners capable of facilitating trade, investment and treasury operations across multiple jurisdictions.

55% of Americans Would Feel More Protected as Consumers If The CLARITY Act Passes – New Poll Reveals

0

A new national poll has revealed that a majority of Americans believe they would feel more protected as consumers if Congress passes the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, commonly known as the CLARITY Act.

As digital assets become more mainstream, many Americans are seeking clearer rules to boost confidence in the industry while safeguarding investors.

According to a recent survey conducted by Focaldata and commissioned by Coinbase, 55% of respondents said they would feel more protected as cryptocurrency users or potential users if the legislation becomes law.

Republicans expressed the strongest agreement with this view. The poll, fielded online between July 14 and 20, 2026, surveyed 2,064 adults aged 18 and older and was weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population.

It comes as lawmakers continue efforts to establish a clearer federal regulatory framework for digital assets after years of uncertainty that has left much of the industry operating under overlapping agency oversight or shifting enforcement approaches.

Beyond the headline, the survey highlights broader dissatisfaction with the traditional financial system. Fully 82% of Americans said the financial system needs to change, with even higher numbers among younger generations 87% of Gen Z and 90% of Millennials.

More than half of all respondents (53%) called for major changes or a complete overhaul. Support for the CLARITY Act also carries potential electoral weight.

Also, more than one in three Americans 36%, said they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who backs the bill, compared with just 14% who would be less likely, for a net positive margin of 22 points.

The CLARITY Act aims to create clearer lines of responsibility between the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission for digital assets, establish customer protection standards for intermediaries, strengthen anti-fraud and anti-money-laundering requirements, and provide greater certainty for innovators and investors.

Proponents argue that regulatory clarity would help bring more activity onshore, protect everyday users, and position the United States as a leader in digital finance rather than ceding ground to overseas platforms.

Notably, they Supporters argue that it will would end years of regulatory uncertainty that has driven some innovation and capital offshore. Backers also note that the bill includes tools to combat illicit finance and consumer protections.

On the other hand, critics and some Democratic lawmakers have raised concerns about investor safeguards, the balance of power between regulators, and the strength of ethics restrictions. Law enforcement groups have at times objected to developer protection language, though positions have shifted in some cases.

As of early August 2026, the legislation remains under consideration in the Senate after earlier bipartisan committee progress and a strong House vote the previous year.

The U.S. Senate is racing against the clock as it has only a few days left before its summer recess to advance the CLARITY Act. A recent alert highlighted the urgency, noting the chamber has roughly three days remaining before lawmakers leave Washington.

If the Senate fails to act before recess, regulators at the SEC and CFTC are expected to continue advancing rules under existing authorities. Market observers have warned that prolonged uncertainty could weigh on crypto asset prices in the near term, though longer-term outcomes would depend on how agencies proceed.

Outlook

The coming days are expected to be pivotal for the future of U.S. digital asset regulation. If the Senate advances the CLARITY Act before the summer recess, it would mark the most significant step yet toward establishing a comprehensive federal framework for the crypto industry, potentially boosting investor confidence and providing long-sought regulatory certainty for businesses.

However, if lawmakers fail to act, the industry is likely to remain governed by the SEC and CFTC’s existing enforcement and rulemaking powers, prolonging uncertainty for market participants.

Rekt x FaZe Energy Drink Cans Arrive on Amazon, Expanding the Brand’s Reach

0

The gaming and creator economy continues to reshape consumer markets, and the latest milestone comes as Rekt’s collaboration with FaZe Clan officially lands on Amazon.

The launch of Rekt x FaZe energy drink cans on the world’s largest online marketplace marks a significant step in the evolution of gaming-inspired consumer products.

By moving beyond direct-to-consumer sales and specialty retailers, the partnership is positioning itself to reach a much broader audience of gamers, esports fans, and everyday consumers looking for functional beverages.

FaZe Clan has long been recognized as one of the most influential organizations in esports and gaming entertainment. Over the years, it has expanded far beyond competitive gaming into content creation, fashion, music, and lifestyle branding.

Teaming up with Rekt, a beverage company focused on serving gamers and digital-native audiences, represents a natural extension of FaZe’s strategy to monetize its highly engaged community through consumer products that align with its identity.

The availability of Rekt x FaZe cans on Amazon significantly increases accessibility for customers. Rather than relying on limited online drops or niche gaming stores, consumers can now purchase the drinks through Amazon’s extensive logistics network.

This allows for faster shipping, easier product discovery, and the convenience of recurring subscriptions for regular buyers. For many brands, Amazon serves as both a sales platform and a marketing engine, exposing products to millions of shoppers who may not already be part of the gaming ecosystem.

Energy drinks have become deeply embedded within gaming culture. Long gaming sessions, esports tournaments, and content creation often require sustained focus and energy, making the category highly competitive.

Established brands have invested heavily in esports sponsorships, influencer marketing, and event partnerships over the past decade. Rekt’s collaboration with FaZe demonstrates how newer brands are using authentic community connections rather than traditional advertising to compete in the crowded marketplace.

The partnership provides another opportunity to diversify revenue streams beyond sponsorships and media content. Esports organizations have increasingly sought stable sources of income through merchandise, food products, collectibles, and branded consumer goods.

Successfully scaling a beverage partnership through Amazon could provide recurring sales while reinforcing FaZe’s presence as a lifestyle brand rather than simply an esports organization.

The move highlights a broader trend in creator-led commerce. Influencers and digital communities are becoming powerful drivers of product demand, often outperforming traditional celebrity endorsements because of their close relationships with audiences.

Gaming fans are generally more willing to support products associated with creators they trust, especially when those products align with their daily habits and interests.

Amazon’s marketplace offers valuable advantages beyond distribution. Product reviews, recommendation algorithms, and promotional tools can significantly increase visibility if customer reception is positive.

Strong sales performance could encourage further retail expansion into supermarkets, convenience stores, or specialty retailers, creating additional growth opportunities for both Rekt and FaZe.

The launch may inspire similar collaborations across the gaming industry. As esports organizations continue searching for sustainable business models, branded consumer products are becoming an increasingly attractive avenue for growth. Partnerships that successfully blend community engagement with practical, everyday products have the potential to generate long-term customer loyalty.

The arrival of Rekt x FaZe energy drink cans on Amazon represents more than just another product launch. It reflects the growing influence of gaming culture on mainstream commerce and demonstrates how digital-first brands are leveraging trusted platforms to scale their businesses.

If consumer demand remains strong, the collaboration could become a model for future creator-driven product launches across the gaming, entertainment, and lifestyle industries.

Nigeria Tightens Crypto Oversight With New Tax Rules for Digital Assets and Exchanges

0

Nigeria has taken one of its most significant steps toward regulating the digital asset economy, with the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) unveiling comprehensive guidelines that bring cryptocurrencies and other virtual assets firmly within the country’s tax framework.

The new Guidelines on the Taxation of Virtual Assets, issued under the recently enacted Nigeria Tax Act and Nigeria Tax Administration Act, establish a detailed compliance regime for virtual asset service providers (VASPs), centralized cryptocurrency exchanges and peer-to-peer (P2P) trading platforms.

The framework follows the transformation of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) into the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) under Nigeria’s sweeping tax administration reforms and signals the government’s determination to expand the tax base by capturing a rapidly growing segment of the digital economy.

The rules introduce mandatory tax identification requirements, automated tax deductions, stricter reporting obligations and substantial penalties for non-compliance, marking a shift from largely voluntary tax compliance to systematic digital tax enforcement.

Exchanges Become Tax Collection Agents

Under the new guidelines, supervised virtual asset service providers, centralized cryptocurrency exchanges and operators of P2P escrow marketplaces must now function as tax collection agents on behalf of the government. Rather than relying solely on taxpayers to declare digital asset transactions, regulated platforms will automatically collect and remit various taxes during transaction settlement.

The taxes include:

  • Electronic transactional levies (stamp duties/EMTL-type charges)
  • Value Added Tax (VAT), where applicable
  • Withholding taxes on qualifying transactions
  • Contract-related transaction duties

The policy effectively embeds tax collection into the settlement process, similar to the automatic deductions already implemented across Nigeria’s banking sector.

One of the most significant changes is the introduction of compulsory Tax Identification Number (TIN) integration across regulated digital asset platforms.

Every customer opening an account with a regulated cryptocurrency exchange or P2P escrow platform must provide a valid TIN during registration. Platforms are also expected to integrate their systems with government tax infrastructure, enabling automatic deduction of applicable taxes and electronic remittance within statutory deadlines through the NRS TaxPro platform.

The measure significantly strengthens the government’s visibility into cryptocurrency transactions and substantially reduces anonymous participation on regulated exchanges.

For users, it effectively ends pseudonymous trading on licensed centralized platforms in Nigeria.

What Is Taxable?

The guidelines clarify that digital assets themselves are not taxed merely because they appreciate in value.

Instead, taxation generally occurs when gains are realized through disposal or exchange.

The framework distinguishes between different forms of digital asset activity.

Self-transfers remain exempt, meaning moving cryptocurrency between wallets owned by the same individual does not trigger tax because there is no change in beneficial ownership.

For businesses, profits generated from virtual asset activities will be taxed under Nigeria’s standard 30% Corporate Income Tax (CIT) regime.

Individual investors will be taxed on profits realized from selling, swapping, or trading digital assets under the applicable Personal Income Tax framework.

The NRS also clarified that income earned from:

  • Staking rewards
  • Cryptocurrency mining
  • Airdrops
  • Validation and verification services will be treated as taxable income.

The new framework significantly raises compliance obligations for cryptocurrency investors. Users will be expected to maintain detailed transaction records, including purchase prices, exchange fees, blockchain network fees, and disposal values.

Without adequate documentation establishing acquisition costs and deductible transaction expenses, taxpayers risk having assessments based on gross transaction values rather than actual realized gains.

The guidelines therefore place greater importance on accurate cost-basis calculations, particularly for active traders executing multiple transactions across different platforms.

The NRS has introduced substantial penalties designed to encourage compliance among both service providers and taxpayers.

For virtual asset service providers and P2P operators:

Violation Initial Penalty Monthly Penalty
Failure to register, collect or remit taxes N10 million N1 million for every subsequent month
Violation Initial Penalty Monthly Penalty
Failure to register for tax purposes N50,000 N25,000 for every subsequent month

In addition to financial penalties, regulated exchanges risk regulatory sanctions, including possible suspension or revocation of licenses issued by the Securities and Exchange Commission for persistent violations.

Industry Faces Major Technology Upgrades

The regulations also require significant technological changes across Nigeria’s regulated cryptocurrency industry.

Exchanges will need systems capable of:

  • Verifying customer TINs
  • Calculating multiple tax obligations automatically
  • Deducting applicable taxes during settlement
  • Maintaining detailed transaction records
  • Reporting directly to the NRS TaxPro platform

For many domestic operators, implementing these capabilities is likely to require significant investment in compliance infrastructure and automated tax reporting systems.

Implications for Nigeria’s Crypto Market

The new framework is expected to reshape trading behavior across Nigeria’s digital asset ecosystem. Retail traders and high-frequency investors may experience higher transaction costs as multiple micro-charges are automatically deducted during trading activities.

Some market participants may increasingly migrate toward decentralized exchanges (DEXs) and non-custodial protocols that operate outside the scope of centralized intermediaries, although such platforms present their own regulatory and compliance challenges.

Institutional investors and regulated financial firms, however, may view the framework positively because it provides greater legal clarity regarding the taxation of digital assets. For the government, automated tax collection could improve compliance while generating a new and potentially significant source of non-oil revenue as cryptocurrency adoption continues to expand.

The guidelines represent another shift in Nigeria’s evolving approach toward digital assets.

Relations between Nigerian regulators and the cryptocurrency industry have undergone a marked transformation over the past several years. Earlier restrictions imposed by the Central Bank of Nigeria on banking relationships with cryptocurrency businesses gave way to a more structured regulatory framework after the SEC introduced licensing regimes for digital asset service providers.

The NRS guidelines complement those reforms by establishing a formal tax regime that integrates virtual assets into Nigeria’s broader fiscal system. Rather than treating cryptocurrencies as operating outside the conventional financial architecture, the government is positioning digital assets alongside traditional financial instruments for tax administration purposes.

While the rules are likely to increase compliance costs for exchanges and traders, they also provide long-awaited clarity on the tax treatment of digital assets and signal the government’s intention to incorporate the crypto economy into the country’s formal financial and regulatory framework.
