Governor Nyesom Wike And His Endless Tantrums

0

The Rivers State Governor and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant, Nyesom Wike, on Sunday, 8th May 2022, rained curses on members of two Ijaw groups who demanded the release of a federal lawmaker currently detained on the orders of the governor.

It’s noteworthy that Farah Dagogo, a current member of the House of Representatives, representing Degema/Bonny Federal Constituency of Rivers State, has been in police custody for a couple of weeks now.

He was declared wanted by Mr Wike for allegedly hiring thugs to attack the PDP Secretariat in Rivers State.

Mr Dagogo, a governorship aspirant of the State, however, refuted the allegation and accused the governor of trying to prevent him from appearing before the party’s gubernatorial screening panel.

The lawmaker was eventually arrested by the Rivers State Police Command the next day after appearing before the PDP panel for screening and was reportedly arraigned before a court in the State. He was thereafter, on the order of the court, remanded in a Correctional Centre in the State.

The Ijaw Youth Congress (IYC) and Ijaw National Congress (INC) have demanded the lawmaker’s immediate release. The two groups gave the governor 48 hours to release him.

However, at a church service on Sunday, Mr Wike lashed out at the groups for giving him an ultimatum to set Mr Dagogo free.

Addressing the congregation at a Thanksgiving Service on the aforementioned date held at St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral in Port Harcourt to celebrate the purported legal victory secured at the Supreme Court of Nigeria over the ongoing oil well dispute between Rivers and Imo States, Mr Wike while standing at the altar, invoked thunder to descend on members of the said groups.

He said, “That takes us to where some people say we are Ijaw Youth Congress, we are Ijaw National Congress, threatening the government. You are wasting your time.

“I don’t know why people don’t even know who they are dealing with, me, me, threatening me, 48 hours,” he said, beating his chest with his left hand, apparently to express his anger.

He further ranted, “Instead of you coming to the government, asking what is the problem, what happened, you begin to threaten the government, ultimatum. Thunder fire you and ultimatum.”

In a video clip that went viral on the social media, some congregants could be heard chorusing the Hebrew word – ‘Amen’ over Mr Wike’s ‘prayers’, while the faces of others were overwhelmed with optimum shock.

The IYC, in its reaction, condemned Mr Wike’s outburst, saying it was not only derogatory but inciting.

The spokesperson of the group, Ebilade Ekerete, in a statement, opined that such “unguarded and incendiary” comments from Mr Wike was capable of souring the existing good relationship between the group and Ikwere (Wike’s ethnic group), hence urged the governor’s kinsmen to call him to order.

The group advised Ijaws who are delegates in the PDP presidential primaries not to vote for Mr Wike, stating such action “will be viewed as a betrayal of our heritage”.

“The body regrets that even more shocking is the fact that the Rivers Governor took his unrestrained verbiage to the hallowed pulpit of a church and desecrated the altar of God.

“It equally points out that Governor Wike has forgotten that by calling fire and thunder on the Ijaw nation, his benefactor and our revered leader, former President Goodluck Jonathan, is an illustrious Ijaw son.

“This ‘thunder’ did not fire the former president when, despite all odds, he made him the choice of the Peoples’ Democratic Party in Rivers State against the wishes of other competent Ijaw aspirants in the state.

“Now, Jonathan as an Ijaw man is also under fire from Governor Wike. For him, all those that made him, including the people of Rivers State, are in his pocket and can be insulted at will.

“We, therefore, call on our people as a whole to see Governor Wike as an enemy of the Ijaw Nation. We urge Ijaws all over the world to speak against this tyrannical behaviour of Wike,” the statement read in parts.

I have overtime chosen to ignore Mr Wike and his overbearing lifestyle, even as he occupies a highly exalted position as state governor. He had on countless occasions thrown caution to the wind while addressing the public.

I personally have nothing against his political career, or purported future ambition, but strongly detest the way and manner he goes about calling people all sorts of names without minding the position he currently occupies.

Even if Mr Wike was severely pained over the ultimatum given to him by the groups, it didn’t call for such reaction or tantrums from someone in his status, let alone while standing on a pulpit.

Leaders of note are invariably mindful of their utterances in the public sphere. They are always mindful of the nature of the environment or gathering they find themselves in.

I’m not unaware that Mr Wike isn’t sincerely aspiring for Nigeria’s presidential post come 2023, as had severally pointed out in my previous analyses. He’s rather making efforts to create confusion, or distraction, among others who truly possess such desire or ambition.

Nigeria’s prospective leaders really need to go for thorough coaching on public speaking prior to assuming any position, either political or otherwise. This step would go a long way to save them and their allies from any future embarrassment while in office.

Effective Collaboration In The Workplace

0

Collaboration is an act of working jointly with others to achieve a common objective. In the workplace, collaboration is when two or more employees work together to accomplish an organization’s set goal.

Collaboration is very synonymous with teamwork, which is often referred to as “higher level teamwork”. As the saying goes “teamwork makes the dream work”. I.e when two or more team members collaborate positively on a project, their teamwork achieves much more than individual effort.

It might interest you to know that some organizations in this 21st century are still faced with the issue of a lack of proper collaboration among team members, they see it as a no-brainer. One thing they fail to know is that failure to collaborate in the workplace can cost the organization’s revenue to dwindle and potentially damage its rapport with clients. About 39% of surveyed employees believe that people in their organization don’t collaborate enough which has posed a very big challenge for the organization.

Therefore, managers of organizations must see the need to foster a collaborative environment because it grants a business a stunning return on investment, as well as increases employee satisfaction. It is important to note that no business thrives with employees working in isolation. There is a strong need for team members to always come together to brainstorm and proffer solutions, to meet the company’s set goals.

A collaborative workspace enables employees to showcase their strengths as well as appreciate the expertise of others. Through this synergy, team members can achieve their maximum potential. Team members’ collaboration often helps the company come up with innovative ideas and out-of-the-box solutions.

There is a strong advantage when team members work together because they get to leverage diverse backgrounds, expertise, and experiences which allows them to surface unexplored perspectives. In as much as there is a strong need for employees to collaborate in the workplace, it is the sole responsibility of the manager to create an environment that facilitates collaboration with ways such as;

  • Facilitating team building Exercises
  • Encouraging new ideas from team members
  • Grouping team members to accomplish a task
  • Listen to employees’ feedback, etc.

When all these aforementioned and many more, are implemented in the workplace, it will foster collaboration. This article wouldn’t be complete without buttressing the benefits of collaboration in the workplace. Here are four (4) benefits;

  1. Problem Solving: When employees work closely together, they will less likely face difficulties in solving problems at work, because different minds come together to brainstorm on an issue which often brings about a quick solution to any problem faced. Collaboratively, the team members come together to share a variety of knowledge, perspectives and experiences which are applied to solve problems.
  2. Increase In Productivity: A collaborative environment significantly improves productivity because as employees work together, their overall productivity will increase which also leads to the organization’s increase in revenue. A company is as successful as the people working in it. When employees work together, they complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses which eventually makes them highly productive.
  3. Positive Workplace Atmosphere: When employees work together effectively, it allows them to build strong social connections which gives the workplace a positive atmosphere. Rather than working in isolation and a feeling of constant competition among each other, team collaboration allows each of the team members to be appreciated for their strengths. Employees will always be happy to turn up to work when they feel they are among their friends and not rivals or enemies.
  4. Increases Organization Profit: No doubt when employees collaborate, it increases productivity in the workplace, which positively affects the company’s revenue. When there is a strong collaboration among team members, they get the work done faster which allows them to accomplish tasks effectively with monetary benefits to the company.

Final Thoughts

Managers must see the need to create an environment that encourages collaboration because it offers the organization a whole lot of advantages. Collaborating in the workplace enables the organization to finish important projects and meet crucial deadlines efficiently. Team members also become highly productive in a collaborative environment.

Is Nigeria’s Central Bank Governor legally qualified to join the 2023 Presidential race?

2

There are a plethora of political bigwigs that have so far indicated interests in the presidential race, despite every other contestant who has publicly declared or has shown an implied interest to join in the contest for the presidential seat, the CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele’s interest came as a shock to everyone.

It is astonishing because of the post he is currently occupying as the Chief Executive officer of the number one financial institution in Nigeria. He occupies a very sensitive position that by all ethical standards, he has no reason to belong to a political party or participate in partisan politics or indicate interest in any elective position until he has resigned or relinquished his position as the Governor of the central bank.

Aside from ethics, codes of conduct and morality, the question is; is there any extant law that prohibits Mr. Emefiele by the reason of the position he’s currently occupying as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria from contesting for any elective post in Nigeria?

First of all, it is in doubt that it is the fundamental human right of every Nigerian citizen to exercise his franchise; to exercise his right to vote and be voted for. Any and every person who has identified him or herself as a member of the Nigerian society and a party to this social contract has been armed by the provisions of section 40 of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigerian to the right to indicate interest, join a political party, participate in politics and contest for any elective post in so far as that individual is of the right age and he is of the right qualifications.

Therefore, Mr. Emefiele’s been a Nigerian citizen before anything else is in every length and breadth of the law qualified to contest for any position in the country but the controversies arose out of his current status as an active public servant and not just a mere public servant of low cadre but someone who is occupying a sensitive position in the public service; the next question this brings to fore is; whether Mr. Emefiele as the CBN Governor is qualified to contest for the presidential seat whilst he is still retaining his position as the chief executive officer of the CBN?.

To answer this question, the provisions of S. 9 and section 11 of the CBN act will come to the rescue. According to the provision of section 9 of the CBN act, 2020, The Governor and the Deputy Governors shall devote the whole of their time to the service of the Bank and while holding office shall not engage in any full or part-time employment or vocation whether remunerated or not except such personal or charitable causes as may be determined by the Board and which do not conflict with or detract from their full-time duties. To this effect, the Governor of the CBN or any of the deputies in the institution is thereby prohibited from joining or engaging in any other remunerated job including participation in active politics which will be a total distraction to them. The Governor by the provisions of this section is expected to resign if he has an interest in going into any other job or joining active politics.

Furthermore, section 11(3) of the same CBN act 2020 also provides that The Governor or any Deputy Governor should resign his office by giving at least three months’ notice in writing to the President of his intention to do so. By the implication of this statutory proviso, if the Governor is interested in politics he should resign by giving at least 3 months’ notice and not one month’s notice which applies to other public servants.

The Electoral act in the controversial section 84(12) provided that any political appointee who is interested in contesting for any elective post should resign three months before the election. This is the statutory provision that Mr. Emefiele through his lawyers went to court to challenge, arguing that this provision does not apply to him for the reason being that he is a public servant regulated by public service rules and not a political appointee.  Let us assume that the proposition of Mr. Emefiele in this regard is right to some extent that he is a public servant and not a political appointee and hence, the provision of s 84(12) cannot apply to his person, what about the provision of section 11(3) of the CBN Act which mandates the CBN Governor and the deputies to resign by giving three months notice.

Truth be told that legally speaking there is no categorical express provision of the law that prohibits a person who occupies the position of the CBN Governor to not contest in an elective post but that person must abide by the rules of public service and the CBN act which mandates him to resign first before joining in active politics to avoid distractions and conflict of interest but to our utmost surprise, the CBN Governor has been swimming in the musky water of active politics since February 2021 as his ward chairman confirmed that this is when the governor officially registered to become a member of the APC

The CBN Governor has breached every ethical rule of public service and such a person can not be said to be fit to become the president of over 200 million people. If he is very much interested in becoming the number citizen of the country as he has indicated he should not be too reluctant to resign or relinquish his current position which is the right thing to do as; it is the game of “go hard or go home”.

Finally, Mr. Emefiele and his teaming supporters should also know that he is setting a bad precedent. We won’t be surprised if the INEC chairman decides tomorrow to join the presidential race without first stepping down from his position as the chairman of INEC; don’t you see how ridiculous the drift is, if care is not taken the country will finally end up in a state of comatose.
