Disband Nigeria’s Quota System If It Would Not Be Applicable in Selecting Presidents via Rotation Presidency

2

The governor of Ondo State Rotimi Akeredolu, has become the latest voice to join the call for southern presidential candidate in 2023. In a statement titled: ‘Our Party, APC, Must Tread The Path of Equity,’ issued on Tuesday through his social media pages, Akeredolu urged his party, the ruling All Progressive Party (APC) to thread the path of equity and avoid making a decision capable of tilting the delicate balance against the established arrangement which guarantees peace and promotes trust.

This comes as the two major political parties; the People Democratic Party (PDP) and APC, face heightening pressure to zone the parties’ presidential candidate to Southern Nigeria.

Akeredolu said the APC can’t afford any internal bickering which holds the potential promise of causing distrust and militating against cohesion, harmony and the zeal to achieve set objectives. Last year, southern governors had agreed that the presidency must be zoned to the south, an agreement that the APC accepted during their convention.

“The leadership of the party ensured that the principle of rotational representation guided its decision at the just-concluded Convention. The party Chairmanship position has gone to the North. All other offices have been filled on this understanding. This is the time the leaders of the party must make a categorical statement, devoid of equivocation, on the pattern of succession’” he said.

The ruling party’s body language is believed to be signaling intent to renege on the agreement of zoning, prompting the growing call for the party to ensure equity by sticking to the agreement it had earlier on zoning during its convention held in March.

“The current democratic dispensation is anchored on the unwritten convention driven by a principle of Equity. Political expediency dictates, more appealingly, that while adhering to the spirit and letters of the laws guiding conduct of elections and succession to political offices,” the governor said.

He said the decision is crucial to ensure successful electoral exercise in 2023, urging the APC to follow its convention electoral principle by giving every part of the country an important stake in Nigeria’s political calculus.

“Our party just elected officers on the established principle of giving every part of the country an important stake in the political calculus. The focus has now shifted to the process which will culminate in the participation of our party in the general elections scheduled for next year.

“All lovers of peace and freedom must do everything to eschew tendencies which may predispose them to taking decisions which promote distrust and lead to a crisis, the end of which nobody may be able to predict.

“The party Executive Committee has fixed a fee for the purchase of the nomination form for the office. It is expected, fervently, that it will proceed to complete the process by limiting the propensities for disagreement to a region for possible micro-management. It is very expedient that we avoid self-inflicted crises before the general elections. It is the turn of the Southern part of the country to produce the next President.

“The party leadership should have no difficulty in making pronouncement on this very important issue, just as it has fixed various fees for the purchase of forms. This must be done without delay. The principle of Federal Character is enshrined in the 1999 Constitution, as amended. It will be disingenuous for anyone to argue against rotation at this period,” he said.

Akeredolu added that “equity dictates that we take a stand” and the APC must not keep party members guessing on the position of the leadership of the party.

“This is the time to weigh in and take control of the process. No statement must suggest, even remotely, that the party harbours certain sentiments which may predispose it to consider throwing the contest open. This is certainly not the time for equivocation,” he said.

Largely, the call for zoning the presidency to the south, particularly the southeast, which has been shut out of Nigeria’s presidential leadership since the end of the civil war, has been buoyed by the federal character principle – which is designed to ensure that every part of the country is fairly represented. The federal character, which birthed the quota system, goes beyond leadership to include areas such as education, the judiciary, public sector and ministerial positions.

For instance, to gain admission into Nigerian Unity Schools, pupils in Anambra or Lagos State (Southern Nigeria) require a cutoff mark above 130, while their counterparts in Zamfara and Yobe States (Northern Nigeria) need 3. The idea is to help education-disadvantaged regions to improve their quality of education by enrolling more people into schools.

On this ground, elder statesmen, Pa Edwin Clark and Pa Ayo Adebanjo, have been advocating the implementation of the quota system in the presidency too. The nonagenarians have called for the disbandment of quota system if it would not be applicable in Nigeria’s presidential system.

Thus, the major political parties have come under intense pressure to reach and uphold a consensus on the 2023 southern presidential candidate.

“PDP & APC will set a very dangerous precedent. PDP won’t zone to South, APC won’t zone to South. Both will abandon zoning. Ahmed Lawan’s ticket is being suggested by Abdullahi led APC. In their thinking, only a Northerner can win elections. The South is now a conquered territory?” Nefertiti wrote on Twitter.

Cybersecurity In The Workplace

0

Cybersecurity is the application of technologies, processes, and controls to protect systems, networks, programs, devices, and data from cyber-attacks. The issue of cybersecurity needs to be treated as a top priority in the workplace because with the high rate of cyber attacks on businesses, it can pose a serious challenge to a company which often leads to a sudden decrease in revenue and loss of customers.

According to Sophos, a global cyber security firm, it disclosed that 71 percent of Nigerian businesses it surveyed were hit with ransomware in 2021, up from 22 percent in 2020. The company revealed this in its state of Ransomware 2022 report. The report also reveals that a total of $706,452 was paid as ransom to the cybercriminals by Nigerian businesses in the year. The average cost of rectifying cyber-attack in the country also went up from $0.46 million in 2020 to $3.43 million in 2021.

Organizations that fall victim to cybercrime often lose huge amounts of money due to extortion by hackers, which leads to a loss of confidence from investors who do not hesitate to withdraw their funds and investments from the company.

Although protecting a business from cyberattacks can be very costly, but it offers the business a whole lot of advantages such as; loss or deletion, improves customer confidence, protection of intellectual protection, and prevention of fraud through financial transactions like wire transfers, etc.

As cybercrime becomes more intense, it is pertinent that organizations step up by improving their security in cyberspace as solutions are in place to protect the company’s data and personal information to reduce disruptions in the future. Companies can use solutions like identity and access management (IAM) to bolster their online security and boost employee productivity at the same time.

Businesses must understand that having tons of information, especially sensitive third-party information, makes them a very high target by cybercriminals. Therefore, they must treat cyber security as a matter of grave concern which they must make a key mandate. More so, having capabilities with a world-class fraud assessment API will help.

Having a robust data security storage solution will help organizations store, manage, and control sensitive data in a secure and controlled environment. Being proactive in implementing cybersecurity measures is important to protect a business from potential cyber threats.

This brings me to say that the issue of cybersecurity in the workplace is everyone’s responsibility, because many cyber hackers do not only target a company’s vital information, they also target employees through sophisticated phishing emails that look like business as usual.

There is a strong need for employers to introduce a cybersecurity workspace culture to emphasize and reinforce cybersecurity behavior among the team members to ensure they play their part in ensuring the protection of the company’s vital information from cyber attacks.

Employers can also go out of their way to invite cyber security experts to train the staff on how to prevent themselves from falling prey to cyber hackers. Having cybersecurity is extremely important because it is the basis for preventing a cyber breach or attack.

When employers make Cyber Security awareness training a top priority, they are playing an active role in preventing the company from witnessing a major loss. Such training should not just be a one-day thing, it should be done consistently, depending on what the company decides.

This should be so because when it comes to cyberspace, there are constantly new threats to cyber safety. In order to ensure an enriched cybersecurity environment in the workplace, there must be a continuous effort from the employer and employees. A quick Google search for terms like “online IT courses Australia” or “cybersecurity training” should give you a list of courses that your employees can take.

Indeed, all hands must be on deck and not just from a selected few. Employees on the other hand should be very cautious when using systems and also very careful when clicking on random links to avoid falling prey to cyber hackers.

Therefore, safeguarding assets like mobile devices, and computer systems, must be a priority, and also strict adherence to workplace security procedures is essential.

Spraying money is a criminal act in Nigeria

0

We can not emphasize enough that the act of spraying money on the floor, the so-called money rain is wrong, crude, embarrassing, disgusting, and generally disrespectful to Nigeria as a country.

People engage in the act of spraying money at Nightclubs, parties, events, even in churches on daily bases as a form of entertainment or showing off or showing love to the celebrant of the party but the worst of this is the act of Yahoo boys (internet fraudsters) spraying money on the streets or in the market places for passersby to be picking up. It has no justification from any point of view.

I can not reasonably phantom their motives for engaging in this kind of crude, disrespectful, embarrassing, and dastard act but whatever are their reasons for engaging in it is, it only points to the fact that they (the internet fraudsters)  are just teenagers who just got hold of money that they don’t deserve and they got drunk by it thereby trying to make a public display out of it. If they claim that they want to show love back to the street (this is one of their baseless arguments defending this act), there are civil ways they can go about it like giving money to the individuals who are interested one by one, this will be much more appreciated and won’t turn the public place into chaos or cause stampede.

Throwing money at marketplaces and crowded streets causes stampede, people who scramble to pick up the money end up getting injured and some of the money ends up getting blown away by air.

In as much as there are a lot of moral grounds why no one should engage in this act of money rain, there are also laws prohibiting the act thereby making it a criminal offense and offenders risk jail term.

If you are a fraudster and you engage in this act of money rain, you are only exposing yourself to be marked for investigation by law enforcement agencies who will stop at nothing to make sure you are apprehended and you face the law.

You are also disrupting public peace and serenity of the environment and you will be held responsible for any damage, loss of lives, or injuries caused by the chaos or stampede caused by your act of spraying money into the air.

Most importantly, the act of spraying money is not just a criminal offense but it is a huge disrespect and slap to the national currency which is our national symbol of identity and unity.

This act of “money rain” is by Section 21 of the CBN act (2007) criminalized and it is punishable with 6 months imprisonment or a fine of N50,000 or both the jail term and the fine.

Citizens of Nigeria both Yahoo boys and others should desist from this act. It is crude and disgusting. Spraying money in nightclubs, parties, events, or in church only shows a lack of discipline and respect for Nigeria’s symbol of identity and national unity.

Clout Chasing Among Nigerian Youth And Ignorance Of The Law

0

Clout chasing has become a trait that is synonymous with Nigerian Youths fondly called the Gen Z. In a bid to trend online or gain popularity, some of them go-ahead to post false information about incidents that never occurred. It is strongly becoming a menace in Nigeria, most especially in the online space where some Netizens have made it a norm to chase clouts on the net.

These clouts chased, clearly indicate that a large number of Nigerian youths have not gotten themselves abreast with the country’s constitution. They do certain despicable things without knowing that such action goes contrary to certain laws enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.

Earlier this year, a lady named Omotoyosi with the Twitter handle @_misteriouss raised a false alarm that she was kidnapped and raped, where she also shared the location. Nigerians, worried about the tweet, contacted the police who swung into action. The police got to the said location only to discover that the lady raised a false alarm.

She later made a disclaimer that she was only chasing clout not knowing that the issue will escalate into something serious. She was however arrested by the police risking a jail term of two years. Raising false alarms is a very punishable offense, as anyone who does such is certainly ignorant of the Constitution.

In Nigeria, raising a false alarm falls under the category of a strict liability offense. The offender when tried can be punished for up to 6 months or more with imprisonment and a fine by the relevant laws. Also, not barely a month has passed, and there was a shocking revelation that was disclosed to the public that some Nigerian girls were sleeping with dogs, where they were paid huge amounts of money.

Recently, a lady shared a video on a popular sharing video application, TikTok, revealing how she slept with a dog and it was not a big deal, as she made a sum of 1.4 million naira just doing the act. It however got to her notice that the police have launched a search for her. The lady in question then released another video to disclaim that she was only “chasing clout” as she did not sleep with any dog for money.

However the police public relations officer, Muyiwa Adejobi disclosed that posting bestial-nature videos online won’t be tolerated by the force as they vow to apprehend the lady. According to the Nigerian Constitution, it was stated that the criminal code act and the penal code act of the Nigerian constitution criminalize sleeping with an animal, as it attracts up to 14 years imprisonment in Nigeria.

It is therefore pertinent to say that there is a strong need for Nigerian youths to get themselves abreast with the laws enshrined in the Constitution. Doing so will save them from constituting public nuisance as well as risking jail terms for “clout chasing” on certain punishable offenses.

In this sensitive period where the country is currently ravaged with so many problems, there is a strong need for the youths to be actively engaged in political affairs to also effect change in the society rather than chasing useless clouts.

Clout chasing has become a menace in this generation, some people want to be popular at any cost, notwithstanding the consequences involved. It’s high time the youths in the country desist from chasing clout as they might overstep boundaries without even realizing it and have themselves to blame.

Promoting Press Impact On Nation-Building As We Mark World Press Freedom Day

0

Every 3rd May, the global community celebrates World Press Freedom Day. Hence, today, the 2022 edition of the remarkable event is being commemorated. The theme of this year’s commemoration is “Journalism Under Digital Siege”.

The Press can be described as the news media and agencies collectively, especially newspapers and magazines. In the same vein, freedom of the Press or the Press freedom is the freedom the press workers or personnel have to communicate and express their views through the media including print and electronic.

While such freedom mostly implies the absence of interference from an overreaching state, its preservation may be sought through constitutional or other legal protections.

With respect to government information, any government may distinguish the materials that are meant to be public from the ones to be protected based on classification of the information as sensitive, secret, and being otherwise protected from disclosure due to its relevance to protecting the national interest. Many governments are also subject to sunshine laws or freedom of information legislation that are used to define the ambit of national interest.

The United Nations’ (UN) 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression. This right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference as well as impart information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers”.

This philosophy is usually accompanied by legislation ensuring various degrees of freedom such as freedom of scientific research known as ‘scientific freedom’, publishing, press and printing. The concept of freedom of speech is often covered by the same laws as freedom of the press, thereby giving equal treatment to both spoken and published expressions.

Undoubtedly, the impact of the press on nation-building cannot be overemphasized. It is noteworthy that, the current socio-political, ethnic and religious intolerance in Nigeria can best be addressed by giving the press a free role not only in presentation of reportage but educating the entire citizenry on the need to embrace absolute tolerance irrespective of their respective affiliations.

The ongoing Boko-Haram terrorism in Nigeria, particularly in the North-East region of the country, coupled with the current crisis occasioned by herdsmen and secessionists cannot be properly approached or tackled without involving the press. In this aspect, the press would enable the citizens and other concerned or affected groups to know what is at stake as well as what is expected of them at any given time.

Of course, it is the press that would enable the general public to acknowledge the anticipated dimension of the said anomalies. Creating awareness and awakening the consciousness of the populace in this regard or in a situation of such cannot be compromised, and such measures cannot be achieved without the effort of the press.

Considering the past elections in Nigeria, we would agree to the obvious fact that the role of the press throughout the exercise was not just enormous, but unquantifiable. It was the press that enabled both the security operatives and the general public to know where and when there was any form of pandemonium or security threat as the case might be as well as the nature of the incident.

Among all, the press created an avenue for transparency as long as the polls lasted which led to a seeming credible, peaceful and successful exercise.

Inter alia, as regards the activities of the political office holders or public officers at large, the press has helped tremendously to fight bribery and corruption that is often exhibited by the said personnel. It is the press that enables the people to be fully aware of the steps being taken by the government towards addressing any issue or anomaly alongside the respective efforts of each of the government functionaries.

Similarly, the contribution of critics in national development or good governance through presentation of constructive criticism cannot be effective without the press.

Against this backdrop, the UN thought it wise to proclaim May 3 of every year as the World Press Freedom Day. The day was approved by the UN General Assembly in December 1993 following the recommendation of the General Assembly of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The Day is an opportunity to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, assess the state of press freedom throughout the world, defend the media from attacks on their independence, and among all, pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

As we commemorate the World Press Freedom Day, there is a need for all concerned authorities and groups in various countries across the world to safeguard their Freedom of Information (FOI) law that is aimed at restructuring the democratic system.

On the other hand, there’s also an urgent need for the release of all the journalists and media personnel across the globe that are being detained unjustly by the police or any law enforcement agency.

More so, the governments at all levels ought to stop further arrest and intimidation of activists whom they perceive as critics of their negative political agenda or mission.

It suffices to say that the press ought to be given a thorough free role in reporting and seeking solutions to issues that may threaten the peace and unity of any country it finds itself in.

On their part, the members of the media must at all times, concentrate on objective or unbiased reportage. Hence, they are expected to think beyond their individual interest in any circumstance they find themselves in. In view of this, no member of the press should on any occasion or on any ground publish any news/story without embarking on thorough and adequate investigation.

In other words, investigative reporting ought to be the watchword of every pressman. As press personnel, you aren’t meant to publish a story based on speculations; rather, the ethics of the job mandates you to go into finding having heard or gotten a story, toward ascertaining its actual origin. Needless to state that you are not in any way meant to publish any news in error.

Furthermore, any practicing journalist is expected to abstain from partisanship while carrying out his/her lawful obligations regardless of the pressure or circumstance. Thus, you must remain resolute in your decisions. Never publish any story with a view to pleasing any individual or corporate body; just do the needful no matter whose ox is gored.

Most importantly, a media practitioner mustn’t be reckoned to be a money monger. Money mongering in the media activity is highly forbidden, thus must be passionately detested by any media personnel.

You are only bound to be passion-driven in your day-to-day activity instead of being money-driven. No doubt, with absolute passion, any professional would attain the peak of the profession he/she is into.

Moreover, as much as any pressman wouldn’t tolerate any form of embarrassment, either from the members of the public or anyone in a position of authority, he/she is equally required to concentrate only on the needful at all cost as regards the ethics of the profession.

Therefore, as we clamour for better treatment for the press across the globe, this is equally a day for all media personnel to have a rethink towards making amends where and when necessary.
