BitMEX to Shut Down Exchange Operations, Ends 11-Year Run as Crypto Derivatives Pioneer

BitMEX, a crypto derivatives exchange platform, has announced that it will permanently shut down operations, bringing an end to more than a decade of operations in the digital asset industry.

The exchange, owned and operated by HDR Global Trading Limited, disclosed via a post that trading services will officially cease on September 23, 2026, following a strategic review of its business and the broader cryptocurrency market.

The company confirmed that it has already stopped accepting new account registrations with immediate effect, describing the decision as a difficult but necessary one.

Announcing the shutdown, the company wrote,

“Today, we share with a very heavy heart that BitMEX exchange will shut down its operations, effective 23 September 2026. The owner and operator of BitMEX, HDR Global Trading Limited, has made the difficult decision to close operations following a strategic review of the business.”

BitMEX urged customers to close all open trading positions and withdraw their funds well before the shutdown date. The exchange noted that it will continue operating normally until August 26, 2026, after which users will no longer be able to open new trading positions.

From that date forward, traders will only be permitted to reduce or close existing positions as the platform gradually winds down its markets. The company said it will begin force-closing open positions where necessary to facilitate an orderly shutdown.

Any positions that remain open by the official closure time on September 23 will be automatically liquidated at the exchange’s discretion. BitMEX also noted that it will not be responsible for trading losses resulting from users’ inability to close their positions before the deadline.

For contracts with limited market liquidity, the exchange said it will implement early settlement procedures and notify affected users through its standard communication channels.

Founded in 2014, BitMEX emerged as one of the earliest and most influential crypto derivatives exchanges. The platform introduced the 100x leverage perpetual swap, a product that went on to become one of the most widely traded instruments in the cryptocurrency market and was later adopted by numerous exchanges worldwide.

Reflecting on its legacy, the company said it remains proud of its role in advancing crypto derivatives trading while maintaining a strong focus on innovation, risk management, and security. Throughout its more than 11 years of operation, BitMEX stated that it never suffered a security breach resulting in customer funds being lost to hackers.

The exchange also emphasized that it has consistently operated in line with Bitcoin’s principles of neutrality, transparency, and decentralization, while prioritizing the protection of customer assets.

Following the shutdown, BitMEX users will no longer have access to exchange services. However, customers will still be able to log into their accounts to view wallet balances, review historical transaction records, and withdraw any remaining assets.

The company also confirmed that all staked BMEX tokens have already been unstaked and made immediately available in users’ accounts to facilitate withdrawals.

Outlook

The closure of BitMEX marks the end of an era for the cryptocurrency derivatives industry. Once regarded as the dominant platform for leveraged Bitcoin trading, the exchange played a pioneering role in shaping the modern crypto derivatives market through innovations such as perpetual futures contracts.

Its exit also reflects the profound transformation of the crypto industry over the past decade. Although BitMEX is leaving the market, its influence on crypto trading is likely to endure, with many of the products and risk management practices it pioneered remaining central to the digital asset ecosystem.
