Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has said that advances in artificial intelligence, robotics, and space exploration could fundamentally transform the global economy.
According to Musk such rapid development could potentially make conventional money irrelevant as technological abundance reduces the need for traditional financial systems.
The billionaire entrepreneur shared the outlook during a conversation with his biographer, Walter Isaacson, on The Builders podcast, arguing that a future powered by intelligent machines could produce goods and services on such a massive scale that money would no longer serve the same purpose it does today.

Musk believes economic value could eventually be measured through fundamental physical resources, including energy, power, and mass, rather than conventional currencies.
Although he acknowledged that some form of currency might remain, he suggested that traditional money would lose much of its significance in an economy where machines could satisfy nearly every human need.
AI and Robotics Could Usher in an Era of Abundance
Artificial intelligence has evolved from systems designed to perform narrow, predefined tasks into increasingly sophisticated tools capable of processing information, generating content, writing computer code, and assisting with complex analysis.
Businesses across multiple industries are incorporating AI into their operations to improve efficiency and reduce the time required to complete certain tasks.
Financial institutions use AI to identify suspicious transactions and assess risks, while healthcare providers employ AI-powered tools to assist with medical imaging and clinical analysis
Musk’s prediction rests on the assumption that artificial intelligence will eventually move beyond digital applications to control sophisticated robots capable of performing physical tasks.
While AI systems can already assist with research, software development, data analysis and other intellectual activities, Musk argues that combining advanced intelligence with humanoid robots would allow machines to manufacture products, construct buildings, provide services and conduct scientific experiments with minimal human intervention.
Under this scenario, robots would become a central component of global production, working continuously to increase the supply of goods and services while reducing the human labour required to produce them.
Musk estimated that digital superintelligence alone could increase the global economy’s output by approximately 20% to 30%, potentially adding about $30 trillion in annual economic output.
He suggested that combining AI with large-scale robotics and space-based industries could expand productive capacity far beyond what is possible within Earth’s current economic system. These figures represent his projections rather than established economic forecasts.
The implication is that products and services that currently require substantial financial resources could become significantly cheaper and more accessible if automation dramatically reduces production costs.
Why Musk Believes Traditional Money Could Lose Its Value
Money currently serves several essential functions in modern economies. It provides a medium of exchange, a way to measure prices, and a means of storing purchasing power.
People earn money through employment or business activities and use it to purchase food, housing, transportation, healthcare, and other necessities. Businesses depend on revenue to cover expenses, invest in production, and generate profits.
Musk’s argument suggests that this system could become less important if AI and robotics generate an abundance of goods and services at costs approaching zero.
In such an economy, people might no longer need to earn conventional salaries to obtain many of the things they require. Instead, automated systems could provide a growing share of essential products and services, reducing the importance of money as a gateway to material well-being.
During the interview, Musk explained that if robots and AI could produce more goods and services than people could reasonably consume, the need for conventional currency would diminish.
However, his prediction does not necessarily mean that money would disappear entirely. He acknowledged that some form of currency could survive, although its value might increasingly be connected to physical resources such as energy and mass.
One of the most striking elements of Musk’s prediction is his suggestion that future economic systems could measure value using physical quantities such as wattage, tonnage, mass and energy.
Looking Ahead
Musk’s prediction offers a glimpse into a possible future in which AI, robotics and space exploration fundamentally reshape the global economy.
His central argument is that if machines can produce virtually everything people need, the traditional relationship between employment, income and consumption could weaken considerably.
However, the transition would depend on technological breakthroughs, the availability of affordable energy, the expansion of physical infrastructure, and decisions about how the benefits of automation are distributed.
