Alex Cooper is discovering that being pregnant can cause emotional distress. The Call Her Daddy anchor revealed she had been diagnosed with gestational diabetes two months after announcing she was expecting a child with husband Matt Kaplan.
“I’m not going to cry on the internet because I’ve never cried on the internet, but when I tell you I almost did,” in a video posted on Instagram on July 30, Cooper acknowledged. “I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. It is when the placenta hormones cause insulin resistance, a.k.a., your pancreas cannot create enough insulin to keep your blood sugar normal.”
However, according to the CDC, up to 9% of pregnant women have gestational diabetes, which is why Cooper claimed she was informed that "anyone can get this." regardless of your previous weight, diet, or degree of exercise.
“When I got this diagnosis, the first couple days, I was really hard on myself,” the 31-year-old acknowledged it. “It felt very isolating, like, as much as my family and my husband and everyone was there for me, I just felt like, it’s me on an island.”
Pregnancy hormones make it an especially difficult pill to take.
“This diagnosis was so upsetting because during pregnancy there’s so much emotionally that you’re going through,” she added. “I have been so blessed and there’s been so many incredible parts of my pregnancy but it’s a lot.”
Cooper acknowledged that since learning the information, a lot has been on her mind.
“Obviously my first instinct is, oh my god I want my child to be OK, and I want my baby to be healthy, and I’ll do whatever it takes,” she clarified. "If there’s another woman out there that’s going through this right now—honey I see you more than I’ve ever seen you.”
The founder of the Unwell organization said that she was "struggling" with pregnancy's overall helplessness.
“It’s not just about eating healthy and exercising,” she went on. “We can do all that and it still might not work. That feeling is really frustrating as a woman who is in protective mode already for this baby.”
She is appreciative of an online community that has guided her thru it all.
“When I was given this diagnosis, no one really told me immediately what to do. They’re like, ‘Oh wait for the nutritionist to call you.’ And I’m like, it’s been a week,” Cooper went on to say. “So, I’m online and I’ve been doing all this research and that is where everyone online has been so helpful reading people’s experiences so far.”
She believed that by sharing her story, the tension would be reduced.
“It’s a really defeating feeling but I’m trying to not let myself get defeated,” she continued. “All anyone tells me is right now, you cannot attract any negative energy. I just need to send bliss to this child and be positive and happy and so that’s what we’re going to do.”
"It's gonna be OK," she reassured both her fans and herself.
