ARCON: Hold Your Peace!
Quote from Ndubuisi Ekekwe on May 4, 2023, 7:10 PM
The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has sued Meta Platform Inc (Facebook parent company), lumping a local company in the fray. The government agency wants to enforce Act No. 23 of 2022 which provides guidelines on advertising in Nigeria: “Basically, ARCON is suing AT3 Resources Limited for running an advertisement which was not vetted by the advertising panel (APCON) and Meta Platform Inc is joined as a party to the suit for allowing an agency to run an advertisement on their platform that has not been vetted by the government agency.”
Google is regulating lending apps. Now Facebook and Instagram are to regulate adverts for Nigeria. How do you win those battles against ICT utilities?
Of course, I am not sure what ARCON is regulating here after it allowed those political adverts to corrode the airwaves. It must not increase the cost of business. And it must not also slow business by forcing these companies to mandate Nigeria companies to get ARCON approval before business messages are published
