Collin Gosselin Recalls Being Restrained and Sedated Throughout His 21-Month Stay at Mental Health Facility.

Note: There are claims of child abuse in this article.

Collin Gosselin is reflecting openly about a hard period in his life. The Jon & Kate Plus 8 alum discussed his 21-month stay at Fairmount Behavioral Health System following his mother Kate Gosselin's 2016 admission, and the terrifying breaking point he reached, in his new memoir In the Shadow of Eight.

One of the sextuplets of Kate and her ex-husband Jon Gosselin, Collin, stated in the book that he had "had enough" after spending eighteen months in the Pennsylvania facility, “enough of the staff. Enough of the chaos. Enough of being drugged into numbness. I couldn’t take it anymore.”

Collin then asked facility leaders when he might be allowed to leave. He said he begged Dr. Jack Brown, a mental health professional there, to explain why he could not go home after nearly two years at the facility. In a 2023 statement to People, Kate said he was admitted “for the safety of myself, his brothers and sisters and for his own well-being,” and that outpatient care “proved insufficient for his needs.”

Both Kate's lawyer and a spokesperson have been contacted by news organizations for comment, but they have not yet received a response.

Before the doctor allegedly phoned for assistance, Collin continued to ask questions after being told to return to his unit.

“Two male staff members were beside me in what seemed like seconds. Hands pulled my arms behind my back, and I was pushed to the floor,” the book was written by the now-22-year-old. “My chest slammed into the tile so hard it knocked the air out of me. Knees dug into my back and legs.”

“I couldn’t breathe,” he added. “I’d seen this happen to others who challenged the staff members, but all I had done was ask a question. As I lay on the floor panting, I watched Dr. Brown’s shiny shoes come toward me, and the two staff members who were holding me down quickly flipped me over to face up. The doctor stepped over me, with his back facing my head, then sat down on me, on my chest.”

Collin, who was placed in his father's care in 2018, says the effects continued. After the doctor stepped away from the boy, he says the staff members... “pulled me into my room, threw me onto the bed, and closed the door.”

He went on to explain how he knew he would be injected with a sedative that the facility's residents called "booty juice" as soon as he spotted the staff members gathering outside his door with a metal tray.

“Within seconds, five or six staff members were on top of me,” he remembered. "Hands grabbed my arms, my legs, my shoulders. They flipped me over onto my stomach and someone forced me down into the mattress while another person pinned my legs to the bed so I couldn’t kick.”

“Someone yanked my pants down,” he went on to say. “Heat rushed to my face immediately. 'Ah, just another day at the office,’ one of them joked. A couple of the others laughed.”

The medication soon began to work. Collin described what happened: “My mind slowed to a crawl. There was no fighting it. My mind went blank, my body still. I felt like a candle that had been blown out with the lightest sigh, and I was plunged into darkness.”

In the book, a facility representative stated that while they were unable to comment about specific persons, “at Fairmount Behavioral Health System, every day our staff strives to maintain a total therapeutic environment through individualized treatment for each patient. Comprehensive patient-oriented activities include group therapy, family therapy, allied therapy and educational services."
