Jason Bateman Talks About His "Negotiations" With Wife Amanda Anka Prior to His Sobriety.
Jason Bateman made a wise choice by deciding to stop drinking. After his career stopped in the 1990s after his years as a child star on Little House on the Prairie and The Hogan Family, the SmartLess host recently reminisced on his ten-year spree of drinking and using drugs to party.
“Fortunately, I was living at a time without social media and camera phones,” in an interview that was released on February 18, Jason informed The Hollywood Reporter, “so I got away with a lot, but it was definitely close a few times.”
But Jason and his wife, Amanda Anka, who married him in 2001, talked about how his turbulent life had to end after he secured more stable employment on Arrested Development in 2003.

“Amanda and I definitely had a few negotiations about the point at which the [partying] spigot was going to completely turn off,” he added. “She’d be like, ‘This drip, drip, drip is annoyingly unpredictable, Jason.’”
The 57-year-old went on, “She didn’t demand that I completely absolve, but that was sort of the back-and-forth, and I was like, well, I feel like my [sobriety] ETA is six months away, but if I could land this plane now, it would alleviate a lot of the tension, so let’s just f--king do it.”
Furthermore, Jason, who is the father of Francesca, 19, and Maple, 14, with Amanda, always understood that he would have to stop partying if he wanted to keep working.
“I was conscious the whole time of wanting to get a lot of these boxes checked before I became a father,” he revealed, “and a guy with a career that I not only wanted but had a feeling I might be able to get it if I just got the right job.”
The Zootopia 2 star also based his decisions on the experiences of others around him.
“I’ve got friends who had bottoms that were pretty chilling,” he stated, “but I was lucky enough to recognize, ‘This is probably as far as I should go if I still want to accomplish the things that I want to get to.’”
Jason is now appreciative of the perspective he has gained as a result of his employment and sober experiences.
“Were it not for some of that cliffhanging earlier in my career, I don’t know if I’d be as good as I am at the caretaking of these opportunities,” he clarified. “But I have seen and felt what it is like to really not have a lot of prospects, and it keeps you hungry.”
