MLB pitcher Kody Funderburk’s wife was diagnosed with cancer while pregnant, just before the couple welcomed their first baby together.

The road of motherhood for Kody and Alicia Funderburk did not begin as they had anticipated. In fact, the Minnesota Twins, who selected the MLB pitcher in the 2018 draft, provided fans with an update on the athlete's family following the birth of their first child together, a young girl called Murphy Jo. Her arrival follows Alicia's pregnancy-related Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis.
“Fundy is back from the Paternity List,” as well as a picture of the newlyweds on the baseball field, the team wrote on X on April 25. “But we want to take a moment to share more of his and his wife's story.”
“While pregnant, Alicia, Kody’s wife, was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma,” a different post with a picture of Alicia in the hospital went on. “After ongoing chemotherapy treatments, doctors are hopeful that she'll make a full recovery.”
The pair welcomed their baby successfully despite Alicia's medical battle.
“Baby Fundy arrived on Monday, April 20th - a healthy baby girl, Murphy Jo,” the group continued. “Both Alicia and Murphy are doing well!”
“We are inspired by the strength and positivity the Funderburks have shown,” they added, “and we wish them the very best and continue to support them on and off the field.”
Alicia talked candidly about the shock of her diagnosis a few days prior to the couple's baby girl's arrival.
“A little photo recap and life update from the last few months,” she wrote a caption for an Instagram post on April 15. “From getting pregnant to being diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma, life recently has had some surprises.”
“While this season of life hasn’t looked how we imagined, Kody and I are beyond grateful for all the love, prayers, and support around us,” she added. “We have been constantly reminded of how blessed we are every step of the way.”
“Baby Fundy is already so loved (and clearly already likes to keep things interesting),” she went on to say. “We can’t wait to meet them in a few days!”
Even though the couple's pregnancy didn't go as planned, Kody stressed the importance of early discovery in maintaining the health of both mother and child.
“We caught it early enough. It was just more about, ‘OK, what do we need to do?’” on April 19, the baseball player informed the St. Paul Pioneer Press. “Kind of like how baseball is, you kind of get to your process, ‘OK, what’s next? OK, go execute that. What’s next? OK, let’s do that.’"
