Paul Bettany Reveals Popping 10 Blood Vessels in His Eye During VisionQuest.

On Marvel sets, Paul Bettany has literally witnessed more positive times. The actor acknowledged that filming his new TV series VisionQuest caused a quite startling injury—one that didn't need any high-flying stunts—nearly 20 years after he joined the superhero franchise. He disclosed that while filming a particularly terrifying sequence for the upcoming Marvel series, he unintentionally burst ten blood vessels in his eye.

“I was pretending to have a device on my head that is doing something to my brain,” on the October 29 broadcast of Jimmy Kimmel Live! Bettany remembered “and I was just wildly overacting.”

The 55-year-old said, "I mean, it was a lesson in less is more," after blowing out the vessels in his eye due to his extreme dilatation.

Jimmy Kimmel, the host, pulled out a picture of Bettany from the set to highlight how bloody his left eye seemed, saying, “I'm impressed when actors can cry on command, you’re actually able to pop your eye on command.”

However, the production team didn't think it was a flawless vision. After the injuries took around two weeks to heal completely, they had to continue filming VisionQuest, in which Bettany, who is married to and has children Stellan, 23, and Agnes, 15, as well as stepson Kai, 29, plays Vision.

“I think it must have cost production so much to take it out,” Bettany thought about it, and Kimmel mentioned that they “had to do their magic and fix it.”

“I mean, the irony is the actor playing Vision is kind of myopic,” Bettany went on to discuss his own vision problems. “I can’t see a thing when I take my glasses off.”

He laughed and continued, “Which is great depending on the actor.”

Fortunately, VisionQuest kept him occupied and scheduled in England, where he collaborated with costars Emily Hampshire, James Spader, and Ruaridh Mollica, among others. Even for Vision's epic Mindspace, though, he might have been too busy.

"I'm not complaining about the amount of work," in October, Bettany told news organizations, "but there are so many pages to get through in a day that you find yourself spending a lot of time working on scenes at night, and I found it really difficult to wind down at the end of the day."

Naturally, he was genuinely enthralled with the chance to revive Vision nearly two decades after he first appeared in the Marvel Universe as J.A.R.V.I.S. in Iron Man (2008).

"It was an amazing experience," he smiled, taunting as well. "You're getting really well paid for it, and that's great."
