Prince Joachim opens up about relocating from Denmark to the U.S. following the loss of royal titles for his children.

Prince Joachim of Denmark has expressed a desire to return home after moving to the U.S. in 2023. His relocation followed Queen Margrethe II’s decision to strip his children—Nikolai, Felix, Henrik, and Athena of their royal titles in 2022 as part of a modernization effort for the monarchy.

Joachim, currently working at the Danish Embassy under the Ministry of Defense, mentioned in an interview that while his family wishes to return to Denmark, they are also open to staying abroad depending on circumstances. His mother, Queen Margrethe, abdicated the throne in 2024, breaking a 900-year tradition, and his older brother, King Frederik X, succeeded her.

"We have a desire to come home," In a Danish-language interview, Joachim informed TV2. "But we also do not rule out the possibility of staying abroad."

Joachim who shares his younger children with wife Princess Marie and his adult sons with ex-wife Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg continued by mentioning that he is currently serving a three-year term with the Danish Embassy under the Ministry of Defense. "For now, it is on our radar, when the post here stops, we will return home."

Months after then-queen Margrethe declared that all of his children would no longer be referred to as princes or princesses, Joachim moved to the United States with Marie and their two children in the summer of 2023. "Necessary futureproofing of the monarchy."

In a statement released in September 2022, the Danish Royal House clarified, "Her Majesty the Queen wishes to create the framework for the four grandchildren to be able to shape their own lives to a much greater extent without being limited by the special considerations and duties that a formal affiliation with the Royal House of Denmark as an institution involves."

In a statement at the time, Margrethe noted, "It is my duty and my desire as Queen to ensure that the monarchy always shapes itself in keeping with the times. Sometimes, this means that difficult decisions must be made, and it will always be difficult to find the right moment."

His children have been adjusting to life without royal titles, focusing on school and expanding their social circles, while Joachim continues his diplomatic role.

The children of Joachim are getting used to living without their royal titles already. "We are each busy in our own way," he told TV2. "The kids are at school, where they enjoy being challenged and have an ever-growing social circle, and I have my job."

"We are our little nuclear family and enjoy it, and we make sure as much as possible that we also have time for each other," Joachim went on. "That it doesn't always get in the way of work, school and homework."

It seems like a period of transition for the Danish royal family! What do you think about this shift?
