Soccer icon Lionel Messi is helping Apple reap the benefitsof an approximately $2.5 billion dollar deal it signed last year for exclusive rights to stream all Major League Soccer games. MLS Season Pass subscriptions surged to over 110,000 on July 21st when he made his Inter Miami debut, compared to 6,143 the day before, according to analytics firm Antenna. Apple TV+ subscriptions, which give soccer fans access to the entire MLS season, also jumped in July for the best month for new U.S. subscribers so far this year.
Rival Google’s Youtube is paying about $2 billion a year to stream Sunday Ticket NFL games for seven years, while Amazon signed a roughly $1.2 billion annual deal to stream “Thursday Night Football”for 11 seasons.
