The regional-based wage structure is a bad idea for NLC

Southwest N794,000, Southeast N540,000: Nigerian Labor Unions Propose New Minimum Wage Brackets

Nigeria’s labour unions should not be proposing for the government to structure wages based on locations as Nigeria has no capacity to execute such a playbook effectively. Like those days in FUTO, where the same university will give you University Scholar accommodation, Dean’s List accommodation, etc, with no coordination that you must have made the Dean’s list to be considered for the University Scholar awards. Fascinatingly, you come to the porter’s office and you have multiple accommodations for you!

Instead of doing this, the labour union should ask the government to implement regional fiscal federalism. Yes, expecting someone teaching in a federal government college in Maiduguri to be paid less than another teacher in Port Harcourt will cause real problems.

Sure, we understood that the cost of living in Port Harcourt is possibly higher than living in Kafanchan. But note that someone living in Kafanchan will likely have to pay for the kids to leave town to attend a university in a bigger place where it is possible for the worker in PHC to have the kids  to go from the house. By the time you model everything, you may struggle to see any core advantage for either over years.
