A U.S. Secret Service member who was tasked with guarding former first lady Jill Biden unintentionally shot himself in the leg. Based on a statement from Secret Service spokesperson Nate Herring to MS NOW, the incident happened at the Philadelphia International Airport at approximately 8:30 a.m. on March 27 following a "negligent discharge" of the agent's gun.
The 74-year-old Biden was not present when the incident occurred.
In accordance with a Philadelphia Police Department statement that MS NOW was able to get, the agent was driving in an unmarked Chevrolet SUV when the gun was fired while he was on duty as usual.
According to authorities, the agent was sent to the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where his status was reported as stable.
Officials reported that neither Biden's itinerary nor airport operations were affected. The incident did not result in any additional injuries.
Biden was in New York on March 26 to see the premiere of Public Charge, an off-Broadway play written by her former chief of staff Julissa Reynoso. Biden was first lady during her husband Joe Biden's administration from 2021 to 2025.
Beside Biden's granddaughter Finnegan Biden, 25, and daughter Ashley Biden, 44, she and Reynoso were shown together.
With a book tour scheduled for later this summer in honor of the publication of her memoir View from the East Wing, Jill is also preparing for future travel.
“It was kind of cathartic for me to write it," just last month, Jill informed the Associated Press. "I wrote about all the, you know, sometimes painful—but other times, most of it really beautiful moments that Joe and I shared during his presidency."
She went on to say, "It’s also a story about my being able to balance life as a working woman and as a mother, a grandmother, a first lady."
