YouTube TV Outflanking Netflix
This is what we call competition from the flank. Yes, Netflix has been focusing on Disney+ and others, only for YouTube TV to come from nowhere to become the real competitor.
In the battle for streaming dominance, conventional wisdom often crowns Netflix as far and away the leader, since it now boasts 260 million subscribers, more than double its closest competition, Disney+. But another rival, often overlooked, is "winning hands down" in viewership and ad wars against Netflix: YouTube. The Google-owned video platform boasted higher viewing numbers for virtually all of 2023, and it did so with user-generated content, not big-budget Hollywood productions. And YouTube's popularity is increasing, based on a Piper Sandler survey, which showed that YouTube passed Netflix as teens' video platform of choice late last year.
Earlier this week, YouTube TV announced it has 8 million subscribers, making it "the biggest internet-streaming subscription TV service in the country."
