Nvidia-Hugging Face Deal Faces DOJ Scrutiny as Microsoft Stock Jumps 5%

The technology sector is facing renewed attention as the U.S. Department of Justice reportedly examines Nvidia’s $12.93 billion purchase of Hugging Face, while Microsoft has delivered stronger-than-expected financial results that sent its stock rising more than 5%.

These developments highlight the growing influence of artificial intelligence, intensifying regulatory scrutiny, and the financial rewards available to companies successfully expanding their AI businesses.

Nvidia’s reported acquisition of Hugging Face represents a significant development in the competition to control essential artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Hugging Face has established itself as a major platform for AI developers, offering access to machine-learning models, datasets, and tools used to build and deploy applications. Its open-source ecosystem has attracted researchers, startups, and established technology companies seeking to develop advanced AI systems.

Nvidia has become one of the most influential companies in the AI industry through its graphics processing units, computing systems, and software platforms. Its hardware powers many of the data centers responsible for training and operating modern AI models.

Bringing Hugging Face into its business could strengthen Nvidia’s position beyond chips, potentially expanding its influence over the software and developer tools that support AI development.

However, the reported Department of Justice inquiry introduces an important regulatory dimension. U.S. antitrust authorities have increasingly examined whether major technology companies are using acquisitions, investments, and strategic partnerships to strengthen their market positions or limit competition.

The inquiry does not necessarily mean that the transaction violates antitrust law or that regulators will seek to block it. Authorities may be examining the transaction’s circumstances, competitive implications, or potential effects on access to AI technology. The precise scope of the inquiry and any formal regulatory conclusions remain important questions.

Concerns could center on whether Nvidia’s growing influence across AI hardware and software might disadvantage competing chipmakers, developers, or cloud providers.

Hugging Face’s extensive developer community and model ecosystem could also make its relationship with Nvidia strategically significant. Regulators may therefore consider whether the combined business would preserve meaningful competition and independent access to essential AI tools.

The acquisition is expected to close in the first half of 2027, and Nvidia says Hugging Face will continue supporting chipmakers, cloud providers, and AI developers. That assurance will matter as regulators assess whether the platform remains accessible across the industry.

Meanwhile, Microsoft’s quarterly results offered investors a reason for optimism. The company reported $92.3 billion in revenue for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, up 19% from a year earlier. Adjusted earnings reached $4.89 per share, rising 18% year over year. Microsoft’s stock climbed more than 5% following the announcement.

Cloud services remained central to performance. Azure revenue rose to $33.2 billion from $22.4 billion a year earlier, reflecting demand for cloud computing and AI-related services. Microsoft 365 cloud revenue also increased, underlining the value of its subscription business alongside infrastructure investments.

The results suggest Microsoft is translating AI demand into revenue, although investors will watch data-center expansion costs and how quickly AI products generate returns. Strong earnings support confidence, but expectations remain high across technology.

The developments illustrate different sides of the AI boom: Microsoft is being rewarded for financial execution, while Nvidia faces questions about how far its influence should extend. Competition, transparency, and sustained commercial growth will shape the industry’s next phase.
