But that is beginning to shift, led by Walmart, which is rolling out digital shelf labels across its U.S. stores in what could become the most significant in-store pricing overhaul since the barcode, per CNBC.

The appeal is straightforward for Walmart as pricing changes that once required hours of manual labor can now be executed centrally in minutes, reducing store-level workload and limiting pricing errors at checkout.

On the ground, the impact is already visible. Amanda Bailey, a team leader at a Walmart store in Ohio, said the system has reshaped daily operations.

“They are not used to seeing digital tags — they think prices are being raised, but what they are really doing is eliminating processes,” she said, estimating that time spent on pricing tasks has dropped by about 75%.

That efficiency matters more in Walmart’s model than in most retail formats. The company operates thousands of large-format stores that double as fulfillment centers for online orders. Digital labels allow it to synchronize in-store and online pricing in real time, reducing mismatches that frustrate customers and complicate logistics.

The labels also integrate with Walmart’s delivery ecosystem. Drivers picking items for orders can locate products faster when digital tags flash, tightening fulfilment times in a business where speed increasingly defines competitiveness.

Other retailers are watching with keen interest. Kroger has begun testing the technology, but Walmart’s scale gives it a first-mover advantage in setting expectations for both consumers and regulators.

That visibility is part of the challenge.

The same capability that allows prices to be updated quickly has triggered concerns that retailers could move toward dynamic pricing, adjusting costs more frequently in response to demand, inventory, or external conditions. The model is already common in airlines and ride-hailing, and critics worry grocery retail could follow.

Scott Benedict, a former Walmart and Sam’s Club executive, said the reaction is predictable.

“When a retailer installs technology that allows prices to change in minutes, shoppers will, of course, wonder how it might be used,” he said.

He noted that grocery shoppers are especially sensitive to price movements. “Every penny matters, and people notice small changes. Sensitivity is especially high right now given inflation, tariffs and broader economic pressure.”

Walmart has sought to draw a clear line. A company spokeswoman said the labels are designed to improve accuracy and efficiency, not to introduce variable pricing.

“If you talk to the people who shop in our stores every week, we think they will have a different view,” she said, adding that “the price you see is the same for everyone in any given store.”

Retailers broadly echo that position. A spokesperson for Kroger said digital labels ensure “clear, accurate pricing right at the shelf” and are used to align in-store prices with online listings and weekly promotions so “customers can count on consistent, reliable information.”

Lawmakers are not fully convinced.

Ben Ray Luján has introduced legislation that would restrict digital labels in large grocery stores, warning that new technology must not add pressure to already rising food costs.

“With food costs rising each month, it’s more important than ever that any new technologies implemented in grocery stores are helping to lower costs, not raise them,” CNBC quoted him as saying, describing his proposal as a “preventative measure.”

In the House, Val Hoyle has called for a ban on the technology until safeguards are in place. “There needs to be laws and enforcement to protect consumers — and until then, I’d like to see them banned outright,” she said, adding that “it is only a matter of time before a billionaire in a boardroom implements the idea” of surge pricing.

Industry groups argue that existing laws already limit that risk. The National Retail Federation says antitrust rules and state-level price gouging laws provide guardrails.

“These aren’t theoretical, they’re enforced. Retailers comply with this framework every single day,” wrote vice president Mercy Beehler.

Still, the economics of the technology are difficult to ignore. Roger White, an economics professor at Whittier College, said companies investing heavily in digital pricing infrastructure will expect returns.

“Given the cost the company will incur to install the capacity for dynamic pricing in its stores, it would be corporate malfeasance if they did not believe doing so would not only recoup the cost, but add profit as well,” he said.

That tension sits at the center of Walmart’s rollout.

On one side are clear operational gains: lower labor costs, fewer pricing errors, better alignment between physical stores and digital platforms, and the ability to adjust promotions quickly. The technology also allows real-time markdowns on perishable goods, which can reduce waste and improve margins. On the other is perception. Grocery shopping is one of the few retail experiences where customers track prices closely, often item by item, week after week. Any sense that pricing is becoming less predictable could erode trust quickly.

Amanda Mosseri Oren of Relex, a retail software company, said the issue will come down to how the technology is used and explained.

“Algorithmic pricing is ultimately a trust exercise, and trust is in short supply at the moment,” she said. “Shoppers aren’t opposed to technology, but they want to know it isn’t working against them.”

The stakes are higher for Walmart than for its peers. Its scale means that operational changes ripple across the industry. If the rollout is smooth and consumer concerns remain contained, digital shelf labels could become standard across U.S. retail within a few years. Otherwise, the backlash could invite tighter regulation and slow adoption.

It also suggests confidence that demand for AI will remain strong enough to absorb that expansion. Enterprise adoption is accelerating, but customers are becoming more selective, looking for clear returns on investment rather than experimentation. OpenAI’s emphasis on sales and deployment support indicates it is adapting to that shift. The company is pushing to ensure contracts and models translate into sustained usage and revenue.

Yet events on the ground point in a different direction. Iranian media reported that the Shahid Ahmadi-Roshan nuclear enrichment facility in Natanz was struck on Saturday. Launched in early December 2025 in partnership with Accenture, the initiative provides personalized, role-based training that evolves with the technology. Vishal Talwar, executive vice president and chief data and information officer at FedEx, who also leads the company’s data logistics solution Dataworks, described the program as a living curriculum refreshed monthly and quarterly.

“This is a living curriculum that will continue to refresh itself every month, every quarter, and we have that in our engagement with Accenture,” Talwar said in an interview. “It was one of the key attributes that we asked for to make sure we designed for something that remains future-relevant.”

The training is delivered through Accenture’s LearnVantage platform and includes interactive live sessions that employees can complete during work hours, back-office time, or at their convenience. FedEx has deliberately remained flexible to determine what delivery methods work best across its diverse workforce — from drivers and package handlers to customs clearance specialists and corporate staff.

Beyond individual learning paths, the program encourages employees to form communities of practice and participate in hackathons. Data scientists across the company recently launched their own community to collaboratively ideate on use cases. “I have never seen an organization’s full C-suite take off for a two-day to just learn,” Talwar said. “That humility that we have to learn, you can’t build it with just launching a program in isolation. So I truly mean it when I say the whole organization is having a joint experience.”

Although the program is still in its early stages, Talwar indicates there are already tangible effects. Frontline workers are applying for corporate roles at a higher rate, seeking advancement as they gain AI-related skills. FedEx tracks progress through a metric it calls AIQ (AI quotient), but Talwar stressed the company is measuring participation and learning rather than over-attributing business outcomes to AI alone.

“We are measuring progress around AI, not necessarily just success, because it’s going to be very difficult to say this success is only attributed to AI,” he said. “AI, in my view, needs to be seamlessly embedded in everything that we do.”

The initiative arrives at a challenging time for the logistics industry. FedEx faces ongoing cost pressures, recent plant closures, and layoffs in locations ranging from Kansas to France, and competition from UPS, which announced 30,000 layoffs to add to the 48,000 it conducted in 2025. Tariffs and policy changes further complicate operations. Taylor Bradley, vice president of talent strategy and success at AI training company Turing, said the greatest barrier to successful AI adoption is the inertia of the status quo.

Bradley drew a historical parallel to Microsoft’s decision in 1990 to include Solitaire with every Windows installation — a simple game intended to teach users how to use a mouse through drag-and-drop mechanics. Turing applies a similar philosophy, engaging teams with creative ways to leverage large language models.

During one HR offsite, the team built a lifecycle management system from scratch in hours using dummy data in a sandbox environment, eventually scaling it into a production-grade talent automation system that saved roughly 2,000 labor hours while still in beta.

Sunita Verma, CTO of AI contract management platform Ironclad and a former leader at Character.AI and Google, recently ran a “20 days of AI learning” campaign at her company to encourage employees to experiment responsibly.

“When people feel empowered to learn, test and apply AI in meaningful ways, it accelerates adoption and leads to better, more responsible outcomes,” Verma said.

Larger enterprises such as DHL Express have advanced AI-powered career marketplaces to help employees identify in-house opportunities and the skills needed to pursue them. Citigroup operates a smaller-scale AI Champions and Accelerators program that relies on tech evangelism to create a ripple effect across its hundreds of thousands of employees.

FedEx’s Long-Term Vision

What sets FedEx apart is the comprehensive, ongoing nature of its program with no defined endpoint. Talwar explained that technology touches every role at the company, from drivers handling pickups and deliveries to customs specialists managing clearance, and AI can amplify performance in all of them.

“Everybody is dealing with technology,” he said. “They deal with technology differently, and each one of those areas can be amplified further with AI. We decided to make sure that we were comprehensive in providing this program and training for everyone, and more importantly, we were meeting the training program at the point on where it’s helpful and contextual for the individual.”

The initiative is seen as a recognition that AI is not a standalone tool but an embedded capability that will reshape logistics operations. By this move, FedEx aims to stay ahead of competitors, adapt to industry constraints, and turn technological disruption into a competitive advantage.
