A cherished cast member of Buffy the Vampire Slayer has departed from this life. According to his family, Nicholas Brendon, best known for playing Xander Harris in the series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, passed away on March 20 at the age of 54.
"He passed in his sleep of natural causes," they informed The Hollywood Reporter in a statement. "Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years."
As per Brendon's family, he was "optimistic about the future at the time of his passing" and was "on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis," including his difficulties with cauda equina syndrome (CES).
"In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans," they revealed. "He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was."
They closed their statement by saying, "Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support.”
In the past, Brendon was being candid about his health issues. He revealed in April 2023 that he had experienced a heart attack and had had two spinal surgeries for CES, which is a compression of the nerve roots at the base of the spine.
In a post to Instagram on his 52nd birthday, Brendon stated, "Sorry for the extra-long disappearing act," adding that scheduling his doctor's appointments was "as emotionally exhausting and painful as dealing with my actual injuries."
At that point, he said, "I also needed time to rest...or at least as much as I'm capable of resting."
Additionally, Brendon has been open about his battles with substance misuse, which caused him to run afoul of the police multiple times in the 2010s.
In a 2015 Facebook update, he stated, "My illnesses and addictions are a daily struggle for me, and I am committed to working on them for the rest of my life." "A big part of that is focusing on positivity. I’m the first to admit I’ve messed up, a lot, and I’ve hurt people I care about and who care about me."
"For those of you who have shared your own struggles with addiction and depression, thank you," Brendon went on to say. "I’m sure I’ll have ups and downs to come, but I’m hopeful for a bright future.
Brendon's TV credits include Faking It, Kitchen Confidential, Private Practice, and Criminal Minds in addition to Buffy. Furthermore, he starred alongside Amy Adams and Lauren Ambrose in a number of films, such as the Psycho Beach Party from 2000.
