Google Will Kill Third-party Cookies for 30 Million Chrome Users in 2024

0

Google’s long-anticipated move to phase out internet cookies is set to begin on January 4th, starting with a blockage for 1% of Chrome users, roughly totaling 30 million individuals.

This action, which comes nearly four years since third-party cookies have been disabled in Firefox and Safari, marks the initial significant step in Google’s Privacy Sandbox initiative, an effort aimed at replacing cookies with an alternative tracking mechanism, dubbed “Tracking Protection,” which the tech giant asserts is more privacy-oriented.

For decades, online entities have relied on “third-party cookies” as the primary tool for tracking users’ activities. These cookies enable websites to collaborate with various companies, including Google, to monitor users’ online actions. The looming extinction of third-party cookies reflects a major shift in digital tracking strategies.

Instead of third-party cookies, Google introduced a new set of tools enabling Chrome itself to monitor users’ online behavior. This new approach involves categorizing users into distinct groups or “Ad Topics,” preserving data on their devices. Websites can inquire about a user’s categorized group but won’t access individualized information, a departure from the conventional cookie-based tracking methods.

Victor Wong, Google’s senior director of product management for Privacy Sandbox, told Gizmodo in an interview in April, about the company’s commitment to enhancing privacy while maintaining accessibility and usefulness of information across the web. According to Wong, this move aligns with Google’s broader mission to ensure an open and accessible internet while safeguarding user privacy.

“We are making one of the largest changes to how the Internet works at a time when people, more than ever, are relying on the free services and content that the web offers,” he said. “The mission of the Privacy Sandbox team writ large is to keep people’s activity private across a free and open Internet, and that supports the broader company mission, which is to make sure that information is still accessible for everyone and useful.”

Despite these changes, Chrome will continue to track user activity, setting it apart from browsers like Firefox and Safari. However, this new approach aims to limit the extent of information exposed about users’ online behavior, representing a step toward enhanced privacy.

The cookie replacements, part of the Privacy Sandbox initiative, are currently an optional feature on Chrome. Users retain the ability to disable these tools through browser settings if they find the concept unfavorable.

As Chrome’s user base constitutes a significant portion of internet users, Google’s cookie deactivation will effectively eliminate them from widespread use. A small test group of 1% of users will experience the default activation of “Tracking Protection,” identified by an eyeball logo in the URL bar, starting January 4th.

Acknowledging the complexity of this transition, Google forewarns users of potential glitches in the early stages. While cookies serve various functions beyond tracking, such as maintaining login statuses and storing cart items, Google aims to segregate and retain necessary cookies while addressing any arising issues.

Users will have the option to disable Tracking Protection or receive prompts to deactivate it for specific websites in case of disruptions.

This strategic move by Google aligns with an industry-wide shift towards fortifying user privacy in response to growing regulatory scrutiny and heightened user demand for stringent safeguards against unwarranted data tracking and profiling.

Central Bank of Nigeria Forecasts Inflation, Exchange Rate Improvement in 2024

0

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has projected a significant reduction in rising inflation and exchange rates in the upcoming year, expecting a more stabilized economic outlook for 2024.

Olayemi Cardoso, the Governor of the CBN, delivered these projections while addressing the National Assembly Joint Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions on Thursday.

During his presentation to committee members from both chambers of the National Assembly, Cardoso highlighted an optimistic forecast for the domestic economy in 2024. He assured that despite short-term inflationary pressures, the year ahead would witness a decline in inflation rates, which is currently at 27.63 percent.

Additionally, he expressed confidence in a substantial reduction in exchange rate pressures, envisioning a more stable functioning of the foreign exchange market.

“The outlook for the domestic economy remains positive and is expected to maintain a positive trajectory for 2024. Inflationary pressures may persist in the short term but are expected to decline in 2024. Exchange rate pressures are also expected to reduce significantly with the smooth functioning of the foreign exchange market,” affirmed Governor Cardoso.

He attributed the positive outlook to the unification of exchange rate windows in June 2023, a policy shift aimed at curbing arbitrage, rent-seeking behavior, and speculation within the market. This move, according to Cardoso, intends to establish a market-driven exchange rate system where foreign exchange demand and supply dictate rates.

“The premium has narrowed and our focus on increasing the autonomous FX supply would lead to more stability and further narrowing of the premium,” he said.

Highlighting trade statistics, Cardoso revealed that total trade in the third quarter of 2023 amounted to N18.804.68 billion. Notably, exports accounted for N10.346.60 billion, while total imports stood at N8.457.68 billion, marking a positive trade balance. He predicted that this surplus would contribute to bolstering external reserves.

However, Governor Cardoso cautioned about lower revenue expectations from oil exports in 2024 due to various domestic factors affecting oil production. He noted challenges such as crude oil theft, pipeline vandalization, production shut-ins, and divestments by major oil companies, leading to the country’s underperformance in oil production targets.

“We expect less revenue from oil exports due to the production limit of 1.78mbpd in 2024. The OPEC-approved quota for Nigeria is 1.8mbpd, which is higher than the 2024 budget assumption.

“However, the country’s production has been below these thresholds. The budget benchmark for 2023 was 1.69mbpd, but the highest level of production during the year was about 1.35mbpd in Q3 of 2023,” he said.

Preceding the CBN Governor’s presentation, Senator Tokunbo Abiru, Chairman of the joint committee, highlighted that the interactive session was a statutory briefing in compliance with existing laws.

Amidst these projections, critics have voiced skepticism regarding the economy’s potential rebound in the forthcoming year, citing ongoing economic challenges. The Nigerian currency, the naira, has faced downward pressure, depreciating to as low as N1,260 per dollar in the parallel market and N904.65 per dollar in the official Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM).

The CBN’s forward-looking projections are understood to be aimed at mitigating the effects of speculations and fostering stability in Nigeria’s fiscal and exchange rate markets.

Saving 140 million Nigerians from Poverty – The Simple Plan

1

Nigeria needs ACTIONS urgently. If 140 million are now poor, does it mean only 70m can power the nation? I call on the governments at different levels to redouble their efforts so that things can improve. Notwithstanding, the World Bank report is not hopeless if Nigeria can follow through as the bank has noted. If we do the work, many things will fall into place.

You can click to read the World Bank’s recommendations on how to destroy poverty in Nigeria. Below are mine which can dissolve all poverty in Nigeria:

Merit-based system – Nigeria needs to make merit part of its process. Without a nationally transparent merit-based system, Nigeria cannot progress.

Pragmatic Innovation – focus on what works, over the purity of scoring political goals, and ethnic devilism. If Ibom deep seaport can expand opportunities in Nigeria, fund it and push more avenues of growth beyond Lagos.

Honest Leadership – the citizens are smarter and can only take cues from their leaders. People willingly pay taxes when taxes work in their lives, they say. Honesty from leaders will release forces of growth across Nigeria.

Integrate Rural and Urban Nigeria – we need to have a functioning postal service, to bridge the huge gap between rural and urban Nigeria. As that happens, invent a locally relevant property rights regime that will unlock the wealth of rural Nigeria in our national balance sheet.
