Nigeria’s Inflation Rate Rose to 22.04% in March – NBS

0

Headline inflation rate rose to 22.04% in March, a 0.13% increase from the 21.91% rate recorded in February, according to the latest report published by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Friday.

The report said the increase was buoyed by the jump in prices of food, housing, fuel and gas, among others. The figure shows a consistent increase in inflation rate for the last two years.

“On a year-on-year basis, the headline inflation rate was 6.13% points higher compared to the rate recorded in March 2022 which was 15.92%.

“This shows that the headline inflation rate (year-on-year basis) increased in March 2023 when compared to the same month in the preceding year (i.e., March 2022),” the report said.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages top the list of items whose prices were increased by 11.42%, followed by housing, water, electricity and gas, which saw 3.6% price lift.

“The contributions of items on the divisional level to the increase in the headline index are food & non-alcoholic beverages (11.42%); housing, water, electricity, gas & other fuel (3.69%); clothing & footwear (1.69%); transport (1.43%); furnishings, household equipment & maintenance (1.11%); education (0.87%); health (0.66%); miscellaneous goods & services (0.37%); restaurant & hotels (0.27%); alcoholic beverage, tobacco & kola (0.24%); recreation & culture (0.15%) and communication (0.15%),” the NBS said.

While the Nigerian economy has been on downward spiral due to plummeting oil revenue, experts have attributed the rising inflation to some monetary policies of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Late last year, in a bid to curtail moneybagg politics, terrorism financing and money laundering among other ills, the CBN introduced the naira redesign policy.

The idea was to mop up excess cash outside banks’ vaults (which was believed to be partly responsible for rising inflation), and release newly redesigned naira notes in minimal quantities with hope it would help tame inflation. However, weeks after its introduction, the policy came back with a different result.

The Nigerian economy, particularly the informal sector, was greeted with severe cash crunch that nearly grounded it to a halt.  With businesses reeling on the mercy of the naira redesign policy, the economy took a further downturn. Experts believe the implication is partly responsible for the rising inflation rates.

But generally, the economy has been in shambles since 2015, due to economic policies introduced by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. The inflation rate accelerated following the decision of the federal government to close Nigerian land borders in August 2019, and ban the importation of selected food items, including rice.

Efforts by the CBN, including raising interest rate to 18%, to tame inflation have failed to yield the needed result.

For months now, after a falling out with Open AI, Elon Musk has been broadcasting his fears about the future of AI.

He solicited the support of top AI figures, including Steve Wozniak and Andrew Yangto, to sign an open letter calling for a six-month pause on developing AI systems more potent than GPT-4, the current version of the generative tool that first launched in November 2022.

The letter, which also included included Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque, researchers at Alphabet-owned DeepMind,  Stuart Russel, an AI pioneering researcher, and Yoshua Bengio, sometimes dubbed the “godfather of AI” also got behind the letter, which lobbied for intervention from sovereign governments.

Well, things have now taken a turn.

Yes, Elon Musk is now launching his own AI company to compete with the likes of Open AI and Bard.

The company  is named X.AI.

On CNBC.. Brian Sullivan , put the question to  Richard Waters, Financial Times editor:

Do we need to start talking about Altman and Musk, and Google in the same conversation?

Waters replied:

‘Elon Musk wants to be in the middle of that conversation, where else would he want to be?… As you said, he was one of the original founders of Open AI, one of the people who got it started.. there was some tension .. with the board… there were some disagreements about what AI safety meant… how hard you should push… how careful you should be with these things… ‘

On a critical discussion on haystack, the host said his initial reaction was ‘Do as I say, not as I do’

Though we could read this as turning an old adage on its head.

Instead of:

‘If you can’t beat them, join them’…

then

‘If you can’t join them, beat them!’

Twitter AI is born! What did he drink in South Africa?

Elon Musk is making all humans appear like escorts into his own world. I mean, there has never been a time in human history where one man shaped and reshaped multiple industries within  two decades. He invented the electric vehicle sector at scale. He pioneered the PRIVATE rocketship sector.

He is drilling via the BORING Company, bringing a new dimension in urban transportation. He is remaking social  media with the experimentations in Twitter. He worked in DeepMind which is the mind behind Google Brain. And he has not stopped with news that he is about unveiling a Generative AI Project:

“The latest move underpins his determination to join the AI race, creating a version that is likely going to be quite different from OpenAI’s. The move is coming at a time when Musk is working to bring his subsidiaries under a parent company named X Corp. He has already merged his recently acquired social media company Twitter into X Corp.”

Hello Twitter AI is born! What did he drink in South Africa, and can someone export that stream to Ovim? We have Tantuta, Ide, etc but his stream may be better.

Comment on Feed

Comment 1: South Africa was like a crucible, he was caught in the post apartheid era. Our minds are woven by the troubles of our era. Elon’s advantage is his ability to move on to another thing and not lose sight of of the past. Water is still the tasteless, colourless and the odourless liquid that we all use.

Comment 2: Elon Musk has immense capabilities, both in visioning and execution, a rare quality anyway. If you are looking for those who can talk or write, they are plenty in the Intellectual World, but for those who can see far and still have the capacity to get things done? Only few are available.

You have to show enormous respect to some people, because those who don’t do stuff have no idea of what it takes to build and deliver systems that work.

There are innovators, and there are innovators. Being a progressive innovator is a unique vocation.

Comment 3: lon is a progressive innovator by all Standards.

Ndubuisi Ekekwe defined it this way for the maths lovers ; Innovation = Invention + Commercialisation.

Elon has proved this by being the richest man in the world through his marketable inventions.

Comment 4: Prof, your fascination over this gentleman is mind blowing. I pray he doesn’t disappoint you.

My Response:  He has passed the phase for any chance of disappointing me. On a scale of 1 to 10 with disappointment below 5, a failure of Musk will be 9 because he is permanently at 10

Comment 4: Elon is from the future. I love his possibility thinking. Never worried about what majority think about what he is deeply rooted in. He is my number one mentor in science atmosphere. He does not believe in race, everything he does if for the wellbeing of humanity. He talks less but proactive in his thoughts. If I were a God, Elon doesn’t need judgement to enter paradise. To us scientist, paradise is an invisible dimension and Elon is creating one through Mars mission. Let us say we have practical Einstein living in our today world.

Tesla Extends Price Cuts in Europe, Israel, And Singapore; Investors Express Concern

0

Giant EV automaker Tesla has extended its price cuts to Europe, Israel, and Singapore, in a bid to boost demand. However, these incessant price cuts on its models have seen investors express concern.

Tesla price cuts are coming after the company cites increased production capacity as the reason for price reductions in several European markets, which includes France and Germany, where prices for the Model 3 and Model Y were reduced between 4.5% and 9.8%.

The giant EV maker also cut prices in Israel, which saw the Model 3 reduced by 25%, while Singapore saw reductions between 4.3% and 5% for the Model 3 and Model Y. In the United States, Tesla has cut the price of its base Model 3 by a cumulative 11% since the start of the year, with a 20% reduction on its base Model Y.

Tesla in an official statement on Friday explained its decision for the recent price cuts, which it said, “Our mission is to accelerate the transition to renewable energy. Our master plan has set a clear pathway to achieve that mission: the transformation of cost-intensive small-series products to cheaper mass-series vehicles.”

The company’s CEO Elon Musk disclosed that the continuous price cuts have no doubt boosted demand, noting that January’s discounts were successful in generating orders.

Despite Musk’s claims for price reductions, several investors have begun to ask if the company grew too fast. Future cofounder Gary Black, a longtime bull who maintains Tesla as his largest position, cut his 2023 earnings estimates by 20 cents to an even $4 per share. For the first time, he forecasted that Tesla will make less profit than the previous year when it posted earnings of $4.06 per share.

He said, “Tesla has long used its sticker price to balance supply with demand. If the order book was brimming over and customers found themselves enduring long waits before getting their car, Musk would hike them to reduce affordability. Yet, consistently cutting prices can be a risky endeavor. If customers start to expect a carmaker will continue to lower its asking price, then they might hold off on their purchase. Moreover, sizable reductions in new car prices immediately reduce the resale of used cars, anger and existing customers that see their asset depreciating”.

Some other investors argue that lowering the prices of its vehicles can help expand the pool of potential customers that can afford a Tesla, furthering its stated goal of accelerating the push to sustainable transportation. Others have urged Musk to drop his ideological opposition to commercial spots and advertise the advantages of Tesla’s products.

Investors are waiting for Wednesday’s results when Tesla reports its revenue for the first quarter (Q1), which will reveal whether the company’s incessant cost cuts have found a way to comfortably absorb the hit without jeopardizing profitability.
