Elon Musk Emerges as the Highest Loser Amongst American Billionaires in 2022

Tesla and Twitter CEO Elon Musk has emerged as the highest loser amongst American Billionaires in 2022 according to Forbes.

Reports disclose that Musk has reportedly lost more than $130 billion from his net worth in 2022 as Tesla shares continue to fall, which his wealth is mostly tied to.

Meanwhile, globally, the world’s billionaires lost nearly $2 trillion combined in 2022, while in the United States, billionaires lost a total of $660 billion collectively.

Musk’s net worth peaked at over $300 billion earlier this year, unfortunately, a 68% year-to-date decline in Tesla stock erased a huge chunk of that.

This saw him displaced from the number one position of the richest man in the world, overtaken by LVMH chairman and CEO Bernard Arnault.

Arnault through holding vehicles and family trusts owns a little over 60% of LVMH’s voting share class, which according to Forbes estimates his worth to $186.2 billion.

Despite the massive decline in Musk’s net worth, his $139 billion fortune still makes him the world’s second richest person, based on data as of December 23.

Although, few analysts predict that Musk might still witness a decline in his net worth, as more Tesla investors are concerned about his commitment to effectively juggle both Twitter and Tesla together.

Since he acquired Twitter for $44 billion in late October, shares of Tesla have dropped 50% compared to just a 3% decline for the Nasdaq 100. Musk has also sold billions of dollars of Tesla stock to fund his acquisition of Twitter.

His chaotic reign has also led to an exodus of advertisers from the micro-blogging social network, amid concerns about the regulation of speech and the surge of misinformation

While Musk is the biggest loser of 2022, he is not the only billionaire whose net worth took a nosedive.

Here’s how much five other U.S. billionaires lost in 2022 according to Forbes.

1.) Jeff Bezos CEO of Amazon lost an estimated sum of $80 billion

2.) Mark Zuckerberg CEO of Meta lost an estimated sum of $78 billion

3.) Larry Page Co-Founder of Google lost the sum of $40 billion

4.) Phil Knight Chairman of Knight, lost the sum of $18.3 billion

5.) Leonard Lauder Chair emeritus, The Estée Lauder Companies 2022 lose an estimated sum of $9.8 billion

Meanwhile, one notable billionaire dropped off the billionaire’s list, who is no other person than the famous U.S rapper Kanye West, who went from a billionaire status to a millionaire after sports brand company Adidas cut ties with him following his anti-semitic remarks.

The terminated business deal has resulted in his net worth decline massively. West who was once valued at $2 billion, now has a net worth of about $400 million.

Also, FTX Ex-CEO and former crypto millionaire Sam Bankman-fried went from being a billionaire to living in penury after his $32 billion company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which saw his net worth massively take a hit.

BIG DATA BOOK: Making a Case for Csurvey as a Method in Digital Humanities Research

Digital humanity, like other fields of study in academia and sectors in various economies, has undergone a series of transformations in the last ten years. The transformation has been largely driven by constant technological innovation aimed at improving people’s lives and simplifying corporate tasks. Scholars in academia are continuing to investigate various problems and conduct research in order to develop new products and services. Through cutting-edge research, they are also assisting society in appraising social and organizational behaviour.

This has always necessitated the use of appropriate methods and tools for collecting and analyzing large data generated by people and organizations on various digital platforms. A quick search on Google using the book category yields thousands of results revealing the availability of books on digital humanities. Using digital humanities+survey+user generated content, approximately 200,000 academic publications are revealed on Google Scholar, one of the world’s leading academic databases.

These findings indicate that individuals and organizations have conducted research and written books aimed at improving understanding of the field. It also implies, based on the number of times the term “digital humanities” appears in books normalized by Google Ngram, that the field is occupying authors’ minds and being considered worthy of writing about.

In other words, there are resources for developing skills and knowledge in the use of appropriate research methods and tools. However, a closer look at the data in Exhibit 1 reveals some surprising findings. Authors appear to have written about content analysis as one of the dominant methods for conducting digital humanities research, as well as user generated content as one of the dominant data sources. The prevalence of the survey method suggests that authors who published their book between 2009 and 2019 regard it as appropriate for conducting digital humanities research.

From the data in Exhibit 1, it is clear that scholars had little interest in reading about user-generated content or developing research using the source for academic conferences and publications, which would have required adopting quantitative and/or qualitative content analyses. Instead, reading about survey methodology and using it as a research method piqued their interest. This further suggests that scholars prioritized different technologies as study subjects and used survey as a research method to understand subjects’ opinions and behaviours while taking into account various research trajectories in digital humanities. Exhibits 3 and 4’s data, which show that for a period of time (between 2009 and 2021), surveys predominated in scholars’ methodological decision-making, provide additional evidence in support of this position.

These and other insights expressed in chapters I contributed to a book on big data for social sciences and humanities motivate me to advocate for Csurvey as a new method for studying organizations, people, texts, and other objects of interest in the digital humanities. In the book, which will be published in 2023, I distinguish the method from traditional quantitative and qualitative content analyses by stating that Csurvey converts users of digital platforms into natural populations and data sources for researchers.

Researchers only need to mine the generated data and situate it within the variables discovered in the existing literature and used for questionnaire development. Csurvey alleviates some of the major challenges associated with traditional survey research in developing countries. For example, research participants are unlikely to fully participate in and respond to traditional surveys. They are, however, usually eager to comment, reply, share, and retweet.

Qatar University Reveals Plan to Turn Messi’s Qatari Hotel Room to a Mini Museum After 2022 World cup

Qtar University has reportedly announced plans to convert the hotel room where Argentina football squad captain Lionel Messi lodged in during the 2022 World Cup into a mini museum.

According to a report by the Qatari News Agency stated in goals.com, the room, which Messi reportedly shared with his lifelong friend and former colleague Sergio Aguero towards the end of Argentina’s triumphant World Cup campaign, will no longer receive guests; instead plans have been revealed to make the area a mini museum, with the belongings of the Argentine retained in all their glory for students and visitors.

In an interview with Qatari newspaper Al Sharq, Hitmi al Hitmi, Director of communications and public relations at Qatar University was reported to have said the room of Argentina national team player Lionel Messi will remain unchanged and will remain available only for visitors and not for residence.

“Messi’s belonging will be a legacy for students and future generation and a great witness to the great achievement Messi has reached during the world cup” the news article stated.

Messi had led the Argentine squad to clinch the 2022 world cup edition by defeating France on a penalty shoot out from a 3-3 draw in the final in Lusail.

Be Inspired By Others But Avoid Vision-Sapping Comparison in Your Career

I never compare myself with others even though I get inspiration from others. But daily, I try to beat Ndubuisi Ekekwe of yesterday.  This construct brings calm to me, and unleashes optimism in my spirit to outperform my past. I believe that I attended the best primary school, best secondary school, best university, lived in the best village, worked in the best companies, and have the best helpful family. It shapes me to appreciate my privileges, deepening my mindset that I have everything today to become whatever, irrespective of the past.

Simply, no excuses because in any state, you are better than many; the real deal is what you can build on that position you are in today.

Yes, no matter your circumstances, do not be hard on yourself with mindless comparison because doing so freezes your energy. But do all necessary to keep improving, no matter how little. And if you do, a positive attitude will unlock opportunities because humans who will help you, directly and indirectly, are attracted to positive people.

Indeed, no matter your circumstances, it is a privilege because millions of kids your age around the world cannot even read, including this post! Leave that vision-killing comparison, and free your mind to pursue your mission. That your classmate is a startup CEO does not mean you should resign your bank job where you are on a great path to GM. 

That your buddy is now a partner in a consulting firm does not mean the academic job is doomed. There is no job in this world people have not left or resigned from. In other words, nothing is nothing. Be inspired by people but be true to YOURSELF. With that, you will enjoy life even as you work to build things that sustain life.  

The greatest among us are people who stay true to their visions – and never those who are chasing other people’s calls. Obama would have picked a job in a big law firm, leaving the community organizing and state politics. But as he stayed true to that vision, he found fulfillment. But that does mean that his classmates who became partners in big law firms or Head Legal in Fortune 500 have failed? NO.

Be inspired by others – but focus on how to execute your vision, one day at a time. Indeed, you need to win over yourself before you can impact your world!  #win yourself for your sake!

India Announces Rule Making USB-C Charging Port Compulsory for All Devices

Following the steps of the European Union, India has announced a new rule mandating mobile device companies operating in the country to switch to USB-C standard charging port for all devices by March 2025.

The new rule, which was announced by a civil servant on Tuesday, was set by the State-run Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) as a quality benchmark for the charging port that the department of consumer affairs wants device manufacturers to implement.

“BIS has notified standards for type C chargers and the government will come up with two common types of charging ports for mobiles and wearable electronic devices,” said Rohit Kumar Singh, secretary, ministry of consumer affairs.

Last year, the European Union Commission proposed legislation to establish a common charging solution for all relevant devices. The Commission said the legislation is key in curbing “e-waste and consumer inconvenience, caused by the prevalence of different, incompatible chargers for electronic devices.” The bloc set a deadline of December 28, 2024 for device manufacturers to comply with the rule, which has been ratified by members and has been approved by the European Parliament.

The Indian government said its 2025 deadline follows the EU’s timeline, and was set after consultation with industry stakeholders about standards and considering global supply chain constraints and availability of products.

Singh said there is a global supply chain at play when it comes to chargers, prompting India to align [itself] with the global timeline.

“There is a broad consensus among the industry and government that the use of USB type C charging ports can be made mandatory after six months of the European Union’s rolling out of standards for USB charging ports in 2024 as electronic manufacturers have a global integrated supply chain,” Singh told ‘Business Standard’.

The new rule was enacted after the Central Consumer Protection Authority formed a sub-group made up of industry representatives, educational institutions and others. The sub-group studied the feasibility of a uniform charging port and agreed last month to a phased rollout of a uniform charging port for effective implementation and easy adoption.

Unused chargers are estimated to pile up to 11,000 tonnes of e-waste every year. In addition, the EU Commission said 38% of consumers complained about their inability to charge their devices due to incompatibility.

Given the environmental concern emanating from e-waste, India’s environment ministry might assess and examine the possible impact of uniform charging ports in electronic devices with regard to e-waste, noted Business Standard.

India is besieged by a lot of environmental concerns dominated by air pollution. The South Asian giant has been making efforts to mitigate the impact in line with global climate goals.

In 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Lifestyle for Environment at the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow. The mission, which is based on the mantra: LiFE calls for “mindful and deliberate utilization” by people worldwide instead of “mindful and wasteful consumption”, appears to be what India is looking to develop starting with USB-C charging ports rule.
