Nigeria Population Commission (NPC) And Its Unending Promises, Failures

0

On Thursday, 14th April 2022, Nigerians were once again, for the umpteenth time, informed that the next national population census would be conducted in the country after the general elections scheduled to hold in February and March, 2023.

The Director-General (DG) of Nigeria Population Commission (NPC), Mr. Nasir Isa-Kwarra made the disclosure at the end of the Council of State meeting, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to the DG, a pilot census would be conducted in June 2022 by the NPC after various political parties must have held their respective primary elections as stipulated by the electoral guidelines.

It’s noteworthy that the last census was held in August 2006. Since then, the teeming Nigerians have been faced with myriad of promises from the NPC, yet till date the citizens still await the conduct of the exercise, perhaps owing to failures or insincerity on the part of the government and the concerned authorities.

In his words, the NPC boss stated the commission was targeting to carry out the next one in April 2023, saying it would deploy high technology in the conduct of the national census.

Mr. Isa-Kwarra said, “It is very crucial because I have highlighted that the census is a very important exercise for the nation. Through census, we generate the data that we use for policy making, for planning, for development, by the three tiers of government, and the private sector. They all need this.

“If you are a private sector, and you are producing something, certainly, you need to know the population of an area if you want to create a market there.

“So, census data is very crucial, very important. The data we have been using are just projections, and estimation and are sort of obsolete, we need the actual census data to use for our planning.”  he landed.

One may want to know if the NPC boss was kidding Nigerians or really serious over those statements made by his person. It’s indeed imperative to critically address the announcement because it was simply laughable and incoherent.

One could the commission be targeting to conduct the country’s population census after the general elections? The statement became more unreasonable and ridiculous when the NPC DG mentioned that every sector requires data to carry out crucial activities.

If he was truly aware that every sector needed data to perform critical duties, why was unaware that such information is mostly required towards the impending national elections come 2023?

Worse still, to make more mockery of Nigeria, he ‘thought it wise’ to notify the citizens that the needed census would be kept pending till after the elections. It suffices to assert that the required data for the polls would be acquired after the elections. Indeed, ‘there was a country’!

In accordance with the extant law, the Population Census is meant to be conducted every ten years in the country. Hence, it’s so saddening to note that the last exercise was carried out since 2006, yet as I write, no tangible effort or move has been, or is being, made to ensure the next one is done soonest. Who is deceiving who?

Nigerians have, without equivocations, had enough of this pattern of deceits. It’s needless to say that the governments need to deploy a new method of playing pranks on the citizenry. For crying out loud, they can’t continue to sing the same song that has already been perceived by all to be deceptive and misleading.

Nigeria is apparently fast becoming synonymous with ruse, to assert the least. This is the reason the electorate must collectively be very proactive come 2023 rather than being reactive as it’s currently the case.

The Unicorns of Africa And Why You Should Join Tekedia Capital Syndicate

0

Africa has 6 unicorn startups today: Interswitch, Andela,  Flutterwave, Chipper Cash, OPay, and Wave. This plot presents some upcoming startups with valuations above $100m. Many are not there including Cellulant, Vetifly, Alerzo, Omnibiz, Piggyvest, and Paytm.

(Many of the numbers are not correct. Kuda was worth $500m many months ago but they still have it for less than $500m. Also, Moove should be close to $500m, not $200m as presented, after raising more than $133m. Yet, it is a starting document from the creators).

My assessment is that Africa will have at least 15 unicorns by 2023.

Tekedia Capital syndicate closes on Wednesday (April 20) and we expect to have many representatives in that unicorn club. Join us and own a piece of Africa’s future unicorns here .

5 Core Leadership qualities a first-time founder should possess

2
Visionary Founder

Starting a business is hard work, even more so when you are doing it for the first time. Serial founders have the benefit of their experience from previous businesses to fall back on, but for the first-time founders, the experience of building the startup will seem like a fish trying to walk on land. There are certain leadership qualities that a first-time founder needs to have to ease his journey.

There are certain leadership qualities that a first-time founder needs to have to ease his journey. A true leader should also stay up to date with the latest leadership trends.

Decisiveness

Running a business is really about making decisions about what to do, when to do it, for whom, when, where, and how it should be done. If as an individual, you are indecisive, you will have more challenges as a first-time founder. You must be able to think on your feet and make decisions on the spot after all considerations. If you are a person who likes to think, rethink, and overthink before making a decision, you will miss out on a lot of opportunities.

This does not mean you should jump in on every new wave. It means you should be able to decide within a short time, whether you want to do something or not, rather than putting off the actual decision for fear that you could be wrong.

Decision-making can be difficult when you begin to consider who ends up with the short end of the stick, but they should be done anyway. Delay can be very dangerous when it comes to making decisions in business.

Management

As a first-time founder, you will have many things on your plate every single time. You should be good at managing resources, people, time, customers, and crises. In fact, crisis management and people management are the critical skills you will require as a founder. If you are poor with managing people or managing tricky situations, you may slip.

Empathy

Empathy is about bringing your human side into conversations and interactions. People should know that they are interacting with a fellow human being and not just some robot, or some tyrant leader who wants his business to be successful irrespective of who gets to pay for it.

Take time to have regular one-on-one conversations with your team members, and encourage them to share their personal wins and losses with the team. Try to not be judgemental. The purpose of communication between you and others does not have to be about agreeing or disagreeing, but about understanding and empathizing.

People generally respond better to you if they know that you will empathize with them and not judge. No one wants to feel misunderstood or disregarded, and personal support or help you can give to your team members will engender loyalty.

The mistake one often sees here is a leader who thinks he needs empathy to deal with his customers, but not employees.

Honest communication

Most problems a brand will face will come down to communication. As a first-time founder, try to build the foundation for honest communication within your team and with your customers. When someone starts to work for you, they are also making a conscious decision to trust you, to invest their time in bringing your vision to life. The same thing applies to your clients and customers. They choose to use your product or solution because they trust you and what you represent.  If at any point, you are perceived to be dishonest, you lose part of that trust.

There is a lot of competition and uncertainty in business. You should be 100% honest and open with your people. Don’t leave them to guess what is going on, or they may think the worst. A key part of honest communication is feedback. Regularly give and ask for honest feedback from your employees and customers. Once honest communication becomes a standard in the company, the rest will fall in place.

Accountability

You don’t want to be that leader who tries to shift blame to every other person and give excuses for everything under the sun. If you do, you will unconsciously breed the same trait in your employees and team members. Good leaders don’t complain. They don’t find excuses. They certainly don’t try and blame things on other people.

Nigeria Ranks Second For Most Musical Streams On Spotify

0
London, UK - August 01, 2018: The buttons of Spotify, Podcasts, Netflix, WhatsApp and Music on the screen of an iPhone.

The music industry in Nigeria is one sector that has made remarkable giant strides and has put the country on the world map. Just like the fintech ecosystem in the country that is currently booming, which is the home of many unicorns, the music industry is also doing remarkably well.

Recently, music streaming giant Spotify disclosed that 20,935 songs were added to the platform by Nigerian creators since market entry, which has placed Nigeria as the second country with the most musical streams. This was disclosed by Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s head of music for sub-Saharan Africa, during a media chat in Lagos on Thursday.

She also added that in the top 10 exported songs from Nigeria, nine are collaborations between local and international hitmakers, proof that Nigerian music is attracting worldwide attention and popularity. According to facts obtained, Spotify disclosed that the average number of artists streamed per user locally has grown by 60%.

Lately, not only has Nigerian music gained popularity globally, different African genres of music most especially the famous Afrobeat have permeated into the International scene which has seen it gain global acceptance with so many foreigners vibing to it. A lot of Nigerian artists lately have been intentional in perfecting their craft and maintaining excellence, which has seen a lot of them gain global recognition which is a huge feat.

The music industry has become highly competitive, which has seen the music bar raised to a very high standard. Any music artist who wants to thrive in the Nigerian music industry has to be Intentional about producing quality sounds. It is also interesting to know that two Nigerian artists Wizkid and Burna Boy have both brought home the grammy which is a very prestigious award.

Some of these Nigerian artists have done so many sold-out concerts, with some selling tickets under hours and minutes. The famous 02 Arena, which is the second-highest seating capacity of any indoor venue in the United Kingdom which holds a total of 20,000 seating capacity, have on several occasions been sold out by some Nigerian artists.

There is no disputing the fact that one thing that gives most Nigerians joy is the music that emanates from the country. It’s more like a therapy that sustains the people despite the plague of insecurity, corruption, and the likes that has ravaged the country.

Beyond the soothing melodies produced by these artists, the music industry is one sector that has contributed greatly to youth empowerment, where talented youths get signed by record labels giving them a source of livelihood. According to statistics, Nigeria’s music industry is expected to be worth $44 million in revenue by 2023. This is indeed impressive.

One amazing thing I have witnessed is that there has been a paradigm shift in the choice of music by Nigerians. Back in the days, a lot of Nigerians preferred foreign music to their local music. Some even disclose how they never listen to Nigerian music due to how wack they feel it is. But now, the narrative is different, as most Nigerians now prefer their local songs and artists compared to foreign songs. Lately, there has been an increased international demand for Nigerian artists, which is indeed good business for them.

Nigeria 2023: We Cannot Shy Away From Reality

0

My dear great people of Nigeria, I sincerely welcome us to another edition of this widely accepted crusade that is aimed at giving us the first class information as well as educating us on all we need to know concerning the fast approaching general elections in the country come 2023.

I am really glad we all made it once again to this platform that is truly prepared to present the truth in a black and white colour. I am so happy none of us encountered any hurdle while trying to locate our way to this platform.

What else can I say than to tell us, thank you for always keeping a date with this movement? I want to appreciate each of us from the bottom of my humble heart for seeing this movement as very crucial and unavoidable.

If your thought is as good as mine, then you would know that it is always my pleasure to welcome us here at all times as the spirit permits. If you are already in my heart, you would realize that I could not wait for a moment like this to come.

Previously, we thoroughly talked about ‘the moment of truth’. The outing took time to tell us nothing but the gospel truth. The edition made us understand fully that not all that glitters is gold, especially as it concerns the forthcoming Presidential election in Nigeria.

It informed us in a language we would understand the nitty–gritty concerning the impending polls. It made us acknowledge that though several persons had indicated interest to vie for the number one seat in the country, many would definitely drop their intention before the race began.

Today, I want to tell us that we can never shy away from reality. It is my own way of informing us that anyone who tries to ignore reality is just deceiving him/herself, to say the least. It is my way of telling us in a clear language that one who is far from reality is doing himself a whole lot more harm than good.

This edition is interested in telling us what reality truly means and why we must not avoid it. It is interesting to fully educate us on what reality actually represents and why it is like life itself.

Reality is that thing that exists. It is what is happening around us. It is those things that are actually within us. Reality is the real nature of everything instead of the way someone imagines it to be or interprets it. Therefore, the reality of a situation is the truth about it, especially when it is unpleasant. In other words, it is the way something really appears.

In Nigeria regarding the awaited presidential polls, the reality remains that only one person is the most qualified and outstanding aspirant among all the individuals that have so far seemingly shown their interest to participate in the race.

The reality surrounding the awaited electoral race is that many of the present aspirants will soonest decline from the journey; needless to say that almost all the aspirants will in no distant time be left with no option than to give way for those who truly and genuinely want to pilot the affairs of the country come 2019. This is absolutely a reality we must not shy away from.

In view of the above fact, we are expected to understand that only a few of them, if not just one, is really out for this journey; they are the only ones truly determined to see to the end because they have decided and vowed not to be on the fence when issues concerning the wellbeing of Nigerians and the country at large are discussed. Like I have always said, only such aspirants are ready to take the passengers to the desired destination.

The serious-minded ones are simply the reality because they really exist. They are the only aspirants we can easily assess any time, any day; the only one with an address. Above all, they are the only aspirants very close to the people; the only aspirants found within the reach of the electorate irrespective of our social or political affiliations.

The aspirants in question can be reached whenever we feel like doing so. They are accessible because, they are at every corner of the country and can never be hidden regardless of the circumstance. They are like goldfish. The earlier we comprehend what they represent, the better for us and the country in general. They are always around us to enable us find out if they are really the reality. It is left to us to locate them, hence the ball is right in our court.

My dear people, we have no choice but to embrace reality. We cannot continue deceiving ourselves by dwelling on things that do not exist; things that are not in any way found in this world; things that can never be with us and have never been.

We cannot continue to shy away from the reality life brings. The reality is life itself, because he who is close to the truth is definitely fully alive; the reality is the truth and fact. The realities are the things we can see with our eyes wide open; they are the things that do not require a spectacle before they could be seen.

Shying away from reality is simply like seeking for doom, even when we are very far away from the aforementioned ugly situation. If it has been proven by this edition that it is highly bad and harmful to avoid the reality, why then should we continue to shy away from it?

Fellow Nigerians, the reality is here with us, thus we must embrace it to the fullness. The reality is all we need to get it right as far as Nigeria is concerned, and the time to fully embrace it is now.

Remain blessed as I urge us to keep a date with the crusade as usual.
