You Can’t Always Be On The “Right Side”

A Nigerian youth seen waving the Nigerian national flag in support of the ongoing protest against the unjust brutality of The Nigerian Police Force Unit named Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Lagos on October 13, 2020. - Nigerians took to the streets once again on October 13, 2020, in several cities for fresh protests against police brutality, bringing key roads to a standstill in economic hub Lagos. Demonstrations organised on social media erupted earlier this month calling for the abolition of a notorious police unit accused of unlawful arrests, torture and extra-judicial killings. The government gave in to the demand on October 11, 2020, announcing that the federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) was being disbanded in a rare concession to people power in Africa's most populous nation. It’s noteworthy that countless persons around the world still claim to be on the “right side”, even when the truth is so glaring.

The phenomenon is indeed not peculiar to any particular country. It suffices to say that it is ubiquitous as far as the global community is concerned. Hence, no society or entity is exempted while discussing the existence of such a lifestyle that has succeeded in maiming most relationships.

The ‘I’m right’ syndrome has continued to endanger various healthy relationships. The paradox is that most of these staggering or pale-looking relationships were rightly built on a golden pedestal. But the inability to show remorse by any of the party involved, having erred, continually poses threat to the anticipated growth of the union.

Allowing your extremism mentality to control your actions would definitely make any relationship you are into crash on arrival. You aren’t supposed to strongly believe in everything. Don’t live the life of a fanatic. Sometimes, compromise is highly consequential, especially when it calls for a way forward.

Relationships are about compromise or sacrifice. Hence, you must be willing at all times to give up on a certain ideology just for peace to reign. If your ego is the problem, you must sacrifice it to enable other things you yearn for to flow. It’s noteworthy that ego had abruptly ended countless enticing unions than death did.

You must, therefore, be willing to give up that venom in your system that is unabated, posing a threat to your cherished relationship. One thing must give way to the other.

It’s always crucial to acknowledge that everybody can never be right at the same time. Someone must be wrong. And when you are right or wrong, your conscience will certainly communicate to you concerning where you belong. It suffices to assert that you are invariably expected to listen to the aforementioned feature (conscience), because it is the only tool that can lead you to the apt path.

Even when you are right, you can assume that you are wrong just for the sake of a way forward. It’s simply like a battlefield where someone must accept defeat. This is where maturity comes in. Honestly, it takes a mature mindset to keep a relationship going or alive. Maturity is like lubrication oil in any ongoing union.

Similarly, immaturity in a relationship is not unlike a bad tyre in a moving vehicle. The latter can never move properly until you change the former. And if the driver tries to manage the situation, it would surely draw the journey backwards; hence, he will never arrive at his proposed destination. Aside from not getting to the destination, it might even cause an accident in the process.

So, maturity is one of the key recipes in any relationship in existence, be it business, friendship, courtship, marriage, or what have you. It would make us possess a flexible mindset rather than a rigid one, thereby keeping us away from the dangers of fanaticism.

The said pattern of ideology (fanaticism) possesses venom that bears the potential of destroying, within a twinkle of an eye, what a man has suffered in building for years.

For crying out loud, you can’t continue to say ‘I am right’ even when aware that you’re wrong. Don’t cheat on your conscience if you truly want your relationship to excel. There are definitely no two ways about it.

‘I am sorry’ doesn’t really mean you are wrong. It rather means you truly cherish the relationship more than your ego. Hence, we either as an individual or group must be invariably ready to tender that apology just for peace’s sake.

The fact remains that you can’t always be on the right side. But even if you are truly wrong, you ought to be willing to shift ground for the wellbeing of the existing relationship.

Rising Over Failures And Becoming A Rock of a Mission

0

He was fervent. He was devoted. But one day, the Chairman of the Board in an important meeting told him that he was going to make a mistake, denying any knowledge of the mission. To make it measurable, He told him that this will happen thrice before the rooster would crow the next morning.

It happened.  And Peter quickly realized that he had failed his Master and his teammates. But instead of falling further, he changed course. He later became a rock to the mission, crucified upside down,  because he felt he was not even worthy to die like his Master.  The St. Peter’s Basilica memorizes his tomb and the global Catholicism cements that transformation: “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church.”

How many times have you failed a “test” and missed targets? How many times has the big boss told you that you are likely to return sub-par numbers? First? Second? Third?

Learn from Peter and find inner energy to overcome setbacks.  Despite failing his tests thrice, he overcame them, recommitted and redoubled efforts to the mission. Rising to the top does not mean zero failures because failure is part of success. Failures bring humility and remind us that we’re humans. Those failures made Peter better!

We desire that we do not have to fail, but if for any reason we have setbacks, we must rise above them. Yes, we can be the “rock” in that company, in that family, and in the community, out of those experiences. Happy Sunday.

Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.” “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “This very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.[Matthew 26:33–35]

Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest’s house. Peter followed at a distance and when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.” But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.[Luke 22:55–57]

Peter said the typical things we say in Board meetings: ‘But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.’ Yes those “we will beat the numbers”. But we do not execute sometimes. The key is rebuilding out of those setbacks and not dwelling on them, to avoid sapping energy to lose focus on the mission.

Godwin Emefiele for President of Nigeria?

0

The whole of the Abuja City Center is littered with campaign posters of different presidential hopefuls. Candidates like Bola Tinubu, Dele Momodu, Yahya Bello, Peter Obi, Yemi Osinbajo Omoyele Sowore, and the likes are all pasted over strategic locations in Abuja.

The most shocking one is seeing the face of the current CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele on Presidential campaign posters. A sitting Chief Executive Officer of the number one bank in the country,  the CEO of the financial and economic management of the country in the presidential race without first resigning?

It all started as a joke when a group organized a press conference asking the CBN Governor to join the presidential race, the group claimed that the governor has done a great job, better than his predecessors as the CBN Governor, hence, he deserves to be the president of the nation. I wouldn’t want to waste my time and the readers’ time in countering that line of thought by the CBN Governor’s followers claiming that he has done well for the Nigerian economy because “res ipsa loquitur”.

Today in Abuja, we the Abuja residents were amazed to see that the “Godwin Emefiele for president” campaign group that was at first treated as a jobless bunches looking for cheap attention got a delivery of a large number of vehicles with Godwin Emefiele’s presidential poster decorated all over the vehicle to boost the presidential campaign of the sitting CBN Governor.

Who is sponsoring these guys? Who is funding  the movement?

The CBN Governor is yet to officially declare his ambition neither has he officially disassociated himself from his campaigners. His silence is not golden at this point, Nigerians are itching to hear from him and know the right position of things. This is the Governor of the Central Bank we are talking about here for Jesus’ sake.

Albeit, he is a Nigerian citizen and he has the right to contest for any political position available in the country so if being the president is always his ambition he has the right to publicly declare his intention and join the race but he must first step down as the governor of the number one bank in the country. The position he is currently occupying is not a political position and someone occupying such a strategic position ought to and in every moral and legal sense of it be apolitical.

It is totally wrong for the CBN Governor to be meddling in politics, if he is not the one sponsoring directly or indirectly his presidential campaign then he should publicly disassociate himself from it… But Nigerians ain’t fools, the exponential expansion of the “Godwin Emefiele for president” campaign is pointing towards the fact that he is cheering his campaigners on if not it ought to have been aborted already.

Legally speaking, the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 stated that the Bank is an independent body and should function the same. The Act subsequently provides that the CBN Governor shall devote all of his time to the service of the bank and shall not for any reason whatsoever engage in any other job either on a full time or part-time basis or any other vocation whether remunerated or otherwise, neither should anybody occupying such a strategic position as the CEO of the bank or even the staffs of the bank dabble into politics. They are expected and ought to be politically neutral.

Nobody is denying Mr. Emefiele’s franchise, he is eligible but there are laws and procedures to be followed. Even if we have decided to throw morality and public policy rules into the gutter, there are laws that are to be followed.

MTN Nigeria Responsible for 13.5% of Total Tax Collected by Nigeria’s Tax Agency in 2021

2

MTN Nigeria was the first company to break the N1 trillion annual revenue in Nigeria. It is also one of the publicly traded companies in Nigeria with a market cap of N1 trillion and above. Magically, it is also one of the companies that is sustaining the Nigerian economy through taxes:

“In 2021, MTN Nigeria’s total tax contribution to all government agencies including the FIRS amounted to N757.6bn while FIRS collected a total of N6.4trn tax revenue in the year. Specifically, MTN Nigeria paid a total of N618.7bn in direct and indirect taxes to the FIRS in the 2021 tax year, representing approximately 13.5 percent of the total FIRS collection for the year.” Yes, one company is contributing 13.5% of the total tax revenue within FIRS purse.

For all the emergent celebrations of small companies, it is only when nations can nurture and inhabit big firms will they transition to the next level. Why? Big companies have the resources to fund the next layers of massive capital-intensive opportunities and feed the purses of governments. We admire those small firms, but they have to grow – and that is the major call for the nation.

My postulation remains that every opportunity has a factor of 6 multiple for Nigeria to attend its near-term stable equilibrium state because the GDP should be $3 trillion, not the paltry $500 billion we have now. If that happens, it means we will have in various forms six “MTNs”, six “Dangote Groups”, six “everything”, etc. Imagine the implications for Nigeria!

MTN Nigeria Communications paid a total of N757bn direct and indirect tax to government agencies in 2021, it has been revealed. This was disclosed during the National Tax Dialogue Event organised by the Federal Inland Revenue Service.

A statement titled, ‘MTN Named Best Tax Compliant Organisation in Nigeria: … recognised as one of the top 20 taxpayers by FIRS,’ signed by the company’s secretary, Uto Ukpanah, revealed that the company’s total tax contribution to all government agencies reached N757.6bn in 2021.

It said, “In 2021, MTN Nigeria’s total tax contribution to all government agencies including the FIRS amounted to N757.6bn while FIRS collected a total of N6.4trn tax revenue in the year.

“Specifically, MTN Nigeria paid a total of N618.7bn in direct and indirect taxes to the FIRS in the 2021 tax year, representing approximately 13.5 per cent of the total FIRS collection for the year.”

“While the past 24 months have been challenging for our country and nations worldwide, we are committed to supporting the Federal Government’s ongoing Economic Growth Recovery Plan.

“We will continue to invest heavily in network expansion with a focus on expanding access to under-served communities. We also plan to connect an additional 2,000 rural communities in 2022.”
