They Came, They Participated, They Dissected Protests and Information Disorder in Africa for Public Good

2

Protests across the world and especially in Africa have assumed a new dimension in scope, mobilization and execution. Aided by advanced communication technology and rapidly changing demographics, protests are becoming more sophisticated and effective ways of making the voice of the people heard and their grievances on socio-political, economic issues pushed to the front burner. Thus, experts, academia and policymakers all over the world are confronted by the new modes of registering dissatisfaction by citizens.

From America to Nigeria, Brazil to Egypt, people have found and leveraged the power of the Internet to mobilize, create massive awareness and generate narratives for the demands that made them hit the streets. The creative use of the internet and its accessories has been applauded widely as a result of the ability to glocalize issues of protests in real-time.

Examples of this wonder of the Internet abound in recent dissents to socio-political issues in the world. From the Arab Spring to #BringBackOurGirls to Black Lives Matter and the ongoing #EndSARS movements in Nigeria, the magic wand of the Internet-enabled platforms to attract public interest and global attention to the issues of dissent could not be overlooked. As it is in war, so it has been in civil protests.

There is, usually, contention between the protesters and the authorities to drive narratives in their direction. While the protesters seek public and international sympathy to their cause, civil authorities strive to attract global understanding on the status quo ante. Consequently, the struggle leads to narratives and counter-narratives in a bid to win the war of narratives.

The struggles have often made the public vulnerable and open to misinformation, disinformation and information disorder. This has given rise to critical questions about protests and the information superhighway enabled by the Internet. Having seen how actors spread fake news and the impacts of misinformation, disinformation and mal-information during the protests, the Center for Research on Development of African Media, Governance, and Society (CEREDEMS) organised the first virtual webinar to dissect the issue and examining possible solutions. The event, which was organised on Saturday 14th November 2020, consisted of speakers and panelists from five African countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, Namibia and South Africa.

Our analyst had earlier spoke with Mustapha Muhammed Jamiu, a Development Communication and International Public Relations Specialist, who hinted that Africa needs to kill disinformation and misinformation before it causes civil wars. Apart from the panelists who discussed issues around information disorder and protests in Africa, our analyst reported that over 200 participants from around the world were trained on how to fact-check information during protests. During the workshop, the participants were walked through determination of authenticity of information across the media -mainstream media and social media.

At the end of the event, a 11-points communique was released by the organisers. One of the points is that: “There is a need for media organisations in Africa to be sensitive to conflict reporting, how protests are presented and reported. And journalists should refrain from being willing collaborators in the promotion of wrong narratives during protests.”

Turkey GP: Hamilton’s Win Puts Him in Historic Level With Schumacher

0

At the end of the Turkish Grand Prix, it was Lewis Hamilton who once again put his name on the winner’s record, and this time, for a historic seventh time, equaling Michael Schumacher’s winning record.

The equalizer came a month after the English racer beat Schumacher’s 91 Grand Prix wins to become formula 1’s most successful racer.

The 35 years old came off the poor practices that characterized the qualifier this weekend, which casted doubt on his winning ability, to clinch the Turkey tournament, putting his Grand Prix wins at 94.

“I have to start with saying such a huge thank you to all the guys that are here, and all the guys that are back at the factory… I wouldn’t be able to do this if I didn’t join this team and the journey we’ve been on has been monumental.

“I want to say a big thanks to team LH for sticking with all these years, and to my family. We dreamed of this when I was young and this way, way beyond our dreams,” he said after winning.

His record breaking moment also attracted congratulatory reactions around the world.

The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted: “An impressive victory – well done @LewisHamilton! You have made us all proud.”

Former Manchester United captain Rio Ferdinand said Hamilton was the “greatest sportsman this country has ever produced – no doubts.”

Following the outbreak of coronavirus, Formular 1 alongside other sports was put on hold, but upon resumption, Hamilton has taken on the sports like his personal game.

The 35 years old has enjoyed a long streak of dominion over the car race, waving the British flag on faces for years. He is arguably, the most successful British sportsman with an attitude outside the sports world. Hamilton lent his voice to the Black Lives Matter movement, and the #EndSARS campaign in Nigeria, a gesture perceived to be spurred by his experience as a Black who grew up in a racially charged country.

Hamilton is F1’s first and only Black world champion in its 70-year history. And in his 14-year career, he has become the most successful driver on the track.

In Turkey, Valtteri Bottas, Hamilton’s Mercedes team-mate, and the only one with the potential to beat him on the race was lapped by his Hamilton and he finished in 14th.

Racing Point’s Sergio Perez’s best in the race could only get him to the second place. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc finished third and fourth respectively, while Carlos Sainz of McLaren finished fifth.

Reflecting on his journey to greatness, Hamilton said it’s difficult to believe that a boy of his background would come this far.

“I am almost lost for words. We dreamed of this when I was young. It is so important for kids to see this, and don’t listen to anyone who says you can’t achieve something. Dream the impossible. You have got to chase it and never give up,” he said.

Hamilton won his first title in 2008 to fulfill his dream of matching his hero, Ayrton Senna’s record. But then he broke it, and went further to smash other records held by the GP’s greats.

He winning the wet race in Turkey with such decisiveness underscores how much the Englishman has mastered the art of winning and the talent he has become. Racing his way to Schumacher’s seven titles, which was deemed unattainable, sets him up for his own record.

“I remember watching Michael win those world championships. To get one or two or even three is so hard. Seven is unimaginable. There is no end to what we can together, me and this team,” Mercedes team principal, Toto Wolff said.

Mercedes has been dominating F1 for years due to Hamilton’s prodigy and the German company hopes to keep the streak with him on the wheel.

He acknowledged the role of his supporters in his win, as tears ran down his chin upon his incredible feat at the end of the race.

“7x Formula 1 World Champion. Wow. To everyone that has supported me along the way, this is for you. To my incredible family, where do I even start? I am eternally grateful for your unconditional love, sacrifices and support. I wholeheartedly dedicate this to all of you. I hope I have made you proud today,” he said.

SpaceX Launch: Four Crew Members Successfully Journeyed to the ISS

0

At 7:27 p.m. EST, Sunday, November 15, SpaceX and NASA launched Dragon’s first operational crew mission (Crew-1) to the International Space Station (ISS), marking another historic aeronautical adventure from the private company.

As the spacecraft soared into outer space, its occupants, astronauts; Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover, Shannon Walker and Soichi Noguchi bade farewell to the earth as their journey to the ISS began. The SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule is expected to dock with ISS on Monday at 11 pm ET.

The trip was moved from Saturday due to bad weather unleashed by hurricane Eta, after being postponed in September. Moving the launch to Sunday thus resulted in additional hours in orbit. Saturday’s launch would have meant a shorter trip of eight hours, 19 hours less from Sunday’s 27 hours journey.

Dragon is the only spacecraft currently flying capable of returning significant amounts of cargo to Earth and is the first private spacecraft to humans to the space station.

In May, a trial version of the crew trip was conducted successfully with National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s astronauts, Douglas Hurley and Robert Behnken. The success of the test journey dubbed Crew Dragon Demo-2 back in May prepared the way for the landmark four-crew-member trip and future commercial travels to outer space.

The six-month trip is a fact-finding mission in which the Crew-1 team is to conduct all manner of experiments during their stay in the International Space Station. Their work will include research into how microgravity affects human heart tissue, and they will try to grow radishes in space to build on studies designed to figure out how food might be grown to sustain deep-space exploration missions.

The launch was nearly thrown into crisis after SpaceX CEO Elon Musk complained on Twitter he was having COVID-19 symptoms, and tests had been coming out negative and positive. NASA was forced to carry out a contact tracing effort to ensure no essential personnel for the launch was exposed.

As the astronauts dose through their way to the orbits in the autopilot capsule being watched over by NASA and SpaceX officials in Houston, Texas, and Hawthorne, California, the path to commercial space travel becomes clearer.

The big dream of operating commercial services, putting people on the moon and launching others to Mars becomes a few steps closer to reality.

“The future of human spaceflight is here. Thanks everyone for tuning in,” NASA tweeted after the launch of Crew-1.

Musk is working on a bigger space vehicle, the Starship, to accommodate more people in years to come. Part of the plan is to start commercial services with the Crew Dragon so that paying customers can be launched into space.

The Starship vehicle is expected to accommodate up to 100 passengers. SpaceX is planning to include it with two other vehicles in its Artemis program billed to commence Moon trips in 2024. As part of its contract with NASA, SpaceX will continue to deliver astronauts to the ISS following the success of the Crew-1 mission.

The Crew-1 launch has ushered in a new dawn that saves the United States a fortune. Before now, US astronauts could only travel to space through Russian Soyuz, and NASA has been paying Russia $90 million per seat over the past nine years.

The United States government has been working since 2004 to find an alternative to the space shuttle retired by President George Bush. The space shuttle flew for the last time in 2011, ever since then, no human has launched to orbit from the US soil until 2020.

The quest to fill the vacuum created by the retired spacecraft continued with subsequent US presidents. With the CCDev program, the scientific adventure to usher in a new era was born.

In 2010, under president Obama, a program called the Commercial Crew Development (CCDev) began to replace the existing space shuttle going on retirement. The aim was to replace the shuttle with a privately built spacecraft. Two US companies, SpaceX and Boeing were contracted with $2.6 billion and $4.2 billion funding respectively to build a new spaceflight for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

When Your Classmates Build Great Companies

0

I am exceedingly proud of what my FUTO undergraduate classmates have achieved. I just shared on Layer3, a great technology company. Meet FlexiP Group,  founded by my undergraduate classmate, Rex Mafiana. FlexiP Group is a leading Information Technology, Real Estate, Civil Engineering, Power and Oil and Gas provider. This emerging industrialized conglomerate has expanded big time in the upstream sector in the Nigerian oil and gas.

Before FlexiP Group, Rex was the West Africa District Manager of NetApp Inc., a Fortune 500 company. He built NetApp to its enviable position in West Africa. And before NetApp, Rex was the West African Sales Manager for IBM.

As a teacher in their midst, my job is to wish them more markets and territories as they fix market frictions and serve our beautiful continent. You also learn from them because they are at the forefront of the markets. A few weeks ago, Rex joined Tekedia Live ( we have many FlexiP Group team members in Tekedia Mini-MBA); he shared the pulse and the trajectory of the market.

To all the entrepreneurs, and professionals working in different roles in companies, in the beautiful Nigeria, I want to wish everyone a profitable great week. Let’s advance our nation and rise to the mountaintop.
