Tiktoking the Greatest Own Goal in U.S. Tech

Microsoft and TitTok’s owner have paused the negotiation for Microsoft to acquire the short video app sensation. Microsoft is an enterprise king with one of the most critical platforms in modern commerce – the Windows. But Microsoft, despite owning LinkedIn, is yet to hold one of those precious mobile age properties. Apple runs the iOS world. Google keeps the inhabitants of Android happy. Facebook has the dual universe of WhatsApp and Instagram. Microsoft hopes TikTok would be it. But President Trump is not buying it: he has noted that he would use executive order to ban TikTok in the United States.

Microsoft Corp. has paused negotiations to buy the U.S. operations of the video-sharing app TikTok after President Trump said late Friday he opposed the deal, according to people familiar with the matter.

The president’s statements spurred TikTok to make additional concessions, including agreeing to add as many as 10,000 jobs in the U.S. over the next three years, but it isn’t clear if those will alter Mr. Trump’s stance, one of the people said.

This is a very complicated matter which may rewire global commerce if indeed Trump goes ahead to ban TikTok. With that precedence in American democracy, expect some countries to have the boldness to enter a season of apps bans. Indeed, nothing would stop Cameroon, Taiwan, Zimbabwe, etc  from banning WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, and they would justify it with whatever reasons Trump has used to ban TikTok. This is not to say that the U.S. does not need to return digital fire to China. But if the U.S. does it, expect the world to ride on that action and change the ordinance. 

Banning TiKTok will hurt the U.S. and its companies around the world. The best thing for Trump is to demand that ByteDance, TikTok owner, divests the app in the U.S. market. It makes no sense to ban the app when the company has indicated interest to sell the U.S. subsidiary.

  • Trump did not specify whether he will act through an executive order, or another method such as a designation, according to NBC News.

  • Trump’s comments come as it was reported Friday that Microsoft has held talks to buy the TikTok video-sharing mobile app from Chinese owner ByteDance.

Largely, if Trump bans TikTok when the company has clarified that U.S. users data are stored in the U.S. and that it is ready to sell to Microsoft, it would open American companies to political attacks in many countries. The ideal of America is freedom of speech, and though TikTok is coming from China, this company has offered a truce by agreeing to divest to Microsoft. There is no need to kill the brand especially in the age when everyone is accusing Facebook  of complete dominance. TikTok is really the only hope to create a competitive environment for Facebook in U.S.. U.S. does not need to score an own goal.

UI: Ojebode bows out as Head of CLA with 41 PhD Graduates, 13 First Class Undergraduate degrees in 9 Years

Professor Ayobami Ojebode has ceased to be the Head of Department of Communication and Language Arts at the University of Ibadan after 9 years of serving as acting and full-time manager of the Department.  Our checks reveal that during this period, Professor Ojebode’s leadership recorded a number of achievements.

Check reveals that during his tenure the Department produced 41 PhD graduates and 13 first class undergraduate degrees. These are the highest in the history of the Department. The Department researches and trains students on varied aspects of communications, media, journalism and language arts.

This achievement was as a result of collaborative efforts of academic and non-academic staff of the Department and the University authority, our checks reveal. For instance, a number of present and past students note that during his headship, he was able to connect the Department with professionals in the industries, which enhanced understanding of internal theoretical and practical knowledge. In collaboration with the supervisors of PhD students, a number of issues preventing the students from finishing their research thesis were resolved. In addition to this, PhD students were mentored and trained through partnership with professionals in the industries.

Information has it that Professor Ojebode is the longest service Head of Department in the Faculty of Arts, the oldest Faculty in the University of Ibadan. As at the time of writing this insight, his post on Facebook, announcing his exit from the leadership seat of the Department, has attracted 138 comments and 214 likes including 2 shares.

Reacting to his humorous post on Facebook regarding his exit as the Head of the Department, the new HOD, Professor Olusola Oyewo says “Where does my HOD think he is “escaping” to? Nowhere! We are in this together…”

A number of students and well-wishers have also expressed their feelings on his exit.  “So, you have taken your bag and moved on after a very successful tenure as HOD? Congratulations. We wish Prof Oyewo a successful tenure of office too. This picture speaks a volume (Clement Olusegun Olaniran Kolawole).”

The stock of Kodak, a film photography pioneer, rose so fast that it tripped 20 circuit breakers in a single day. The U.S. government has announced the company will be transformed into a pharmaceutical producer under the Defense Production Act. Just like that, the stock went from $2.41 to close to $50. Now, why do we not have the same trajectory in Nigeria? Largely, the Nigerian Stock Exchange is not moved by news that spontaneously. GTBank declares record profits, the next day, the stock goes down! Dangote was mistakenly appointed by APC as part of a presidential campaign team, the stocks did not move (trading hours), despite the obvious risk. What is going on in NSE? The latency between events and when stocks begin to correlate in NSE surprises me.

Kodak begins a new era, moving into pharmaceuticals with massive government loans. Yes, go into generic drugs and leave cameras for Samsung, Apple and others.

Thanks to a $765 million government loan under the Defense Production Act, Kodak is moving into drug production. The former film leader is going to make a bunch of generic drugs, such as the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine, to reduce the U.S.’s dependence on countries such as China and India. President Trump: “It’s a breakthrough in bringing pharmaceutical manufacturing back to the United States.” Fujifilm made a similar pivot, and health care and material solutions now makes up 43% of that company’s total revenues (Fortune)

I stopped worrying about my identity as a Nigerian and started warming up for my ideology; The world clock is yet turning its hands to the favor of Mama Africa, in no time. And the question is; Are you ready for what is about to happen?

This prophecy is so vivid that even a busy hustler on the street can attest to it. At first it is coming as a really challenging moment in every African man and woman’s life due to the difficulties following the pandemic, but if you look at it with deep learning eyes, you will agree that, before a great success, comes a grave suffering.

If our fathers are considerate enough to reserve at least the sovereignty of our individual nations; the young, bright and innovative generation will build castles of greatness on it.

The great business moguls; Dangote, Coscharis, Tony Elumelu, Ndubuisi Ekekwe (PHD), and a few others have cleared some of the toughest Sambisa forest in the Automobile, Venture Market, Food and Civil Engineering propagator industry, and Intellectual innovations. The space that is vacant to big scale is the Internet space.

Who will lead the children of Africa to this top mountain, technically and ensure the water of life continues flowing, to never want to return back to the Masters onion and fishes to survive.

The America’s four giants, Apple, Google, Amazon and Facebook are holding the world to what can be termed as, “ransom,” if not like a stiff kick on a cold grossed tight ball, I wonder what it is. If we do not take this  bull by the horn seriously, and find a route to freedom, while we celebrate the success of the mentioned, what are we doing?

If after the Pandemic (Covid 19) era, and Africa does not produce and empower the next game changers in Technology, we will leave the discussion and enter into the street to continue hawking pure water. Although we have hopes with innovations such as Social Media (PingSMile.com), Internet Service provider (BeepTool), Education game changers (Tekedia), Food accessibility facilitators (FoodMoby.com), and a powerful stance in the Tv media solution providers (Bestlifeontv.com). No need to worry, but there is war that looks so weary even from afar. Omoh gather liver on time oh!

The Footprint started long ago, but the type that will change the future of Africa starts from here. Do not be scared to start working on that dream project, no matter how humongous it may look, as long as it is not a thing to do after life, there is hope. Just start. This is a message to the young think tanks of Africa, which you are one of them, by grace.

A great future doesn’t require a great past:

This could have been so true, but Africa has great past, so why is the present such a threat to a great future? is it because the sense of instant gratification  is ravaging the system, or that we are so scared to be seen as genuine hustlers with hope of winning, although not yet, but surely with the right attitude. The current mental design of an average African, especially a Nigerian youth, is that… IF YOU NO BUY BENZ, WETIN YOU GAIN.

This should be the wackiest mindset you will ever live to experience today. What now happens, to the success of great men like Elon Musk? was he tearing up to buy benz at early 20’s or was he eyeing a future nobody ever thought would go private. The choice is yours to make, but a must by the virtue of owning your next generation a good shelter. IF E NO CONCERN YOU TODAY, E GO CONSPIRE AGAINST YOU TOMORROW. No talk says, I no tell you oh.

You need to pay the heavy price for the success you want to celebrate and live off:

This was a quote by my friend, Mr. Mpilo Mbali from Democratic Republic of Congo, a renowned miner of Copper Ore, Gold Ore amongst other special minerals; One would not argue that you need to pay the price for the future you aim at, but the issue is usually inability to understand what exact price that has to be paid for this future. Is it to study, or work hard selling firewood or spending 60% of your daily time in the farm? I do not think these are the points.

Take for instance, you want a future where your living room will be as big as Paul Okoye of the defunct Psquare group. That would be so mediocre to dream of as life’s ultimate goal. What happens if an earthquake the range of 5 and above happens, that house goes way below the ground level, and leaving the burden on the insurance company to cover; to certain percentage only.

 

  • Let us instead set the goal to have the next world power from Africa; Nigeria it is possible!
  • Let us build the next Google, Facebook, Amazon and Apple from Africa
  • Let us innovate the Education system of Africa and build the next Oxford University in our motherland; Tekedia Institute can be the next Harvard University in Africa.
  • Let us grow the next Indian farms in Africa
  • Let us develop the next Microsoft brains in Africa

Sacrifice, persistence, drive, failure, rejection, loss all sum up to answer success:

Remember that nothing good comes easy. If we must build the Africa of our dream, (okorobia, agboghobia, Nna, Nne, Agadi, genu nti.. Hausa, Yoruba, West Africa, East Africa, South Africa, Africa in diaspora, Ndi be anyi), we will surely face the challenges, but there is high probability to win.

Also applicable to gaining more followers on Instagram; you must put out more content or pay Meme pages that have more followers to draw the traffic to your page. but then you need to continue working creatively to retain the magnet, by offering value not status.

If we must build and win the space of the future, for Mama Africa, the foot print must start today, with the right gigantic goal in place. Set the dream so big that even the moon will seem so small to shine through it all night hence allowing the stars and the sun to help. NA WE DEH HERE. Let us make it happen while we still can.

An adage speaks; Sometimes starting late may lead to your early success, more than starting early. It is vice versa. So do not worry that we maybe starting late, let us just get to work, now.

Are Soft Skills Important?

Soft Skills, also known as People Skills, are non-technical skills that indicate one’s ability to interact with others in the workplace. They are important in relationship building, and are always sought during interview sessions to determine good fit of candidates.

With the unemployment challenge faced in different countries, so many candidates have lost the opportunity to secure their dream job due to the lack of these skills. It is a well known fact that a lot of graduates do not know how to craft a good CV/Resume. Many do not know how to communicate effectively, as well as imbibe good business etiquettes. Hence, it becomes an issue even in the workplace, as some employees who lack these skills, get a series of queries and even laid-off at their workplace.

Soft Skills are diverse and include such skills as Negotiation, Conflict Resolution, Effective Communication, Team Work, Problem-solving, etc. It has been validated that having technical skills alone is not enough. So many employers place emphasis on those who have both Soft Skills and Technical Skills. They want those with a good attitude, who are disciplined, and can manage time effectively.

An internal study conducted by Google in 2017 found that their best teams were not the ones full of top scientists, but interdisciplinary groups that had employees who brought strong soft skills to the collaborative process. Also, as reported in the LinkedIn Learning 2020 Workplace Learning Report – in which LinkedIn analyzed data from more than 660 million professionals and more than 20 million jobs to identify the 15 most in-demand skills, the top five Soft Skills identified were Creativity, Persuasion, Collaboration, Adaptability, and Emotional Intelligence.

How can one acquire Soft Skills?

There are different training for Soft Skills, in which candidates have to pay to learn them, and get certified for successfully completing them. In Nigeria, this burden has been lifted from jobseekers, as they no longer have to worry about the cost of training. They are tutored by experts , supported on their career journey, as well as accessed. They are also given a certificate upon successful completion of the training.
