Nigeria’s MedTech MDaaS Raises $1 million to Expand Diagnostic and Primary Care Facilities

0

Nigeria’s medtech startup, MDaaS, builds network of diagnostic and primary care facilities. It just raised $1 million from Consonance Investment Managers, Techstars, and FINCA Ventures.  It will use the money for expansion across Nigeria and broad Africa.

MDaaS Global provides all patients with the diagnostics they need to identify health issues earlier, gain access to treatment, and ultimately, live happier, healthier lives. Through its patient-facing brand BeaconHealth Diagnostics, MDaaS Global offers a wide range of services including imaging services such as digital x-ray, ultrasound, & and mammography, cardiac services such as ECG and echo, and lab services, ranging from chemistry analysis and immunoassay to hematology. MDaaS Global is the centralized diagnostic department for surrounding hospitals and clinics in the community, currently partnering with over 60 referring health facilities at its flagship center in Ibadan, Nigeria.

MDaaS, which operates locally in Nigeria as BeaconHealth Diagnostics, creates affordable and accessible diagnostic services in clinically underserved communities. It builds and runs centers that offer radiology, cardiology, and laboratory services targeted at the populations least reached by existing health services?—?the low- to middle-income populations outside of major cities. Its facilities serve as outsourced diagnostic centers for surrounding clinics and secondary (state) hospitals.

Core to MDaaS’ strategy is minimizing operational and acquisition costs in order to offer quality but affordable services to its clients. Tech-enabled centers and the economies of scale of running a chain of centers allow MDaaS to centralize core functions, including radiology. An intense focus on sourcing low-cost refurbished equipment has driven MDaaS to develop in-house procurement expertise that can acquire and ship such equipment to Nigeria for a price that is 60 percent below local rates. The equipment is reliable and high performing, achieving 99 percent uptime with minimal maintenance costs. The result of this strategy is that MDaaS can offer a much higher quality of service than is available locally, while also guaranteeing the lowest possible price.

The press release

Healthtech company MDaaS Global, which is building a network of tech-enabled diagnostic facilities in Nigeria, has closed on seed funding totaling US$1 million. Led by Consonance Investment Managers, with participation from TechstarsFINCA Ventures, an investment initiative of FINCA International, the Fund for Africa’s Future, a fund led by Iyinoluwa Aboyeji and Nadayar Enegesi, Greentree Investment Company, and others, the round will see MDaaS scale and replicate its innovative diagnostic center business model, as the company seeks to open 100 additional centers in Nigeria and West Africa over the next five years.

MDaaS was created to address the lack of high-quality, affordable diagnostic services available for low- and middle-income sub-Saharan Africans, starting with Nigeria’s 130 million low- and middle-income patients. Where available and up-to-date, health services are unaffordable for most of Nigeria’s population, and expensive out-of-pocket costs discourage patients. MDaaS leverages its vertically-integrated supply chain, technology platform, and patient-centered design to provide modern, convenient services at a price point patients can afford. It offers a wide array of high-impact diagnostic procedures from simple malaria tests to echocardiograms and pap smears. And MDaaS’ affordability is helping change the healthcare narrative, with basic procedures, like obstetric ultrasounds, starting at just US$4.

Founded in 2016 by Oluwasoga Oni, Opeyemi Ologun, Genevieve Barnard Oni, and Joseph McCord, MDaaS was incubated at MIT’s Legatum Center for Development and Entrepreneurship and was part of the inaugural Techstars Impact class of 2018. The company launched its flagship diagnostic center in Ibadan, Nigeria’s 3rd most populous city, in November 2017 under its patient- and physician-facing brand BeaconHealth. To date, the company has served over 9,000 low- and middle-income patients, speedily identifying health issues and connecting them with a variety of medical specialists and affordable treatment options.

Having partnered with over 60 referring health facilities, MDaaS serves as the centralized diagnostic department for surrounding hospitals and clinics within Ibadan. MDaaS also partners globally with corporates, Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), and developmental organizations seeking top-tier diagnostics for their employees and beneficiaries.

Speaking on the funding, MDaaS Global’s CEO and Co-Founder Oluwasoga Oni said, “This funding round fuels our next phase of growth, allowing us to continue providing modern, connected healthcare for Africa’s next billion. With diagnostics as the bedrock of modern medicine and key to the treatment of diseases like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes – which are on the rise within the continent – unbridled access to quality healthcare is crucial. We are immensely proud of our brick-and-mortar presence; merging physical patient care with state-of-the-art technology enables us to reach more patients with the care that they deserve.”

It is estimated that 40% of the medical equipment in sub-Saharan Africa is currently obsolete or out of service. On a continent where public healthcare is chronically underfunded – receiving less than 5% of GDP, MDaaS presents the opportunity to bolster poorly-equipped hospitals and clinics in what is evaluated to be a $1.6 billion market in Nigeria alone.

Lagos Needs Apps to Improve Efficiency of Food Sharing Value Chain

0

By Mutiu Iyanda

Like other main cities in Nigeria, wasting food is unavoidable in Lagos. This is one of the major results of recent research I conducted in Lekki, Ajah and Yaba areas of Lagos state on food sharing as a potential solution to reduce food waste. Within these areas, it is evident that people are ready to share the leftovers with their neighbours and be responsible consumers by preventing waste.

As Lagos state and federal governments working towards attainment of Goal 2 –ending hunger and promoting food security of 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, analysis indicates that the behaviour of the people in the areas, has established an integrated food sharing value chain which needs attention of Information and Technology professionals and prospective entrepreneurs.

From Lekki to Ajah and Ajah to Yaba, it is obvious that residents prioritise social capital in forms of relationship initiation and maintenance. Sharing leftovers does not evolve without strong relationship. When a weak relationship exists, analysis reveals that giving and receiving leftovers become difficult. This is one of the challenges associated with the first stage of the value chain. For the second stage, sharing leftovers in the studied areas is not gender-driven. Givers do not consider whether the receivers are males or females. Analysis also reveals that the needs to increase intimacy and reduce the number of malnourished people in the communities are part of the motivating factors.

Chowberry

When the specific benefits they are deriving from sharing and receiving leftovers were asked, the givers believed that they empathised, receivers had elusive commodity and be part of the neighbourhood.  The benefits received by the givers and receivers are in relation with the notion that when people contribute to the development of growth fostering relationships, they grow as a result of their participation in such relationships.

As pointed out earlier, IT professionals, especially app developers could draw from the insights and give Lagos residents mobile application that could be used to enhance food sharing. Such app should be mobile phone enabled not internet-enabled, which is in the market. The app should also be useful beyond connecting supermarkets to NGOs and low-income earners associated with Chowberry, a web app developed by Oscar Ekponimo.

The app connects supermarkets to NGOs and low-income earners, allowing them to buy food that’s about to expire at a discount. Ekponimo says the response to the project has been encouraging and he’s been able to see first hand how it’s transforming lives.

African Development Bank Plots a Future of Financial Inclusion with a Financing Facility

0

By Nnamdi Odumody

The African Development Bank in conjunction with strategic partners recently launched the African Digital Financial Inclusion Facility to scale access to the provision of digital financial services across Africa.

The African Development Bank, with donor partners, will launch the Africa Digital Financial Inclusion Facility (ADFI) on 12 June 2019 at the Bank’s Annual Meetings in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea….

Digital financial services are emerging as a powerful force for financial inclusion, gender equality and inclusive economic growth. For consumers in low and middle-income countries, digital financial tools, such as mobile payment systems, provide a gateway to greater economic security, empowerment and opportunity.

Although there is a growing ownership of mobile phones in Africa, the benefits of digital financial inclusion have not been fully harnessed.

This fund which was recently launched at its Annual Meeting in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Agence Francaise de Developpement and the Government of Luxembourg contributing to this initiative.

It is to ensure that at least 320 million financially excluded Africans of which 60 percent are women have access to digital financial services. About $100 million will be deployed in grants while $300 million will be on debt capital from the Bank’s resources. There are instruments to solve the financial inclusion paralysis by providing digital financial services to low income communities across Africa.

According to the African Development Bank’s President, Dr Akinwunmi Adesina, with the right investments in Innovation and Smart Digital Growth, the obstacles to achieving financial inclusion and greater economic opportunity for all will be overcome.

The four pillars which this initiative will focus on are infrastructure which includes digital and interoperable payment systems, digital products and innovation, policy and regulatory reform and harmonization and capacity building. It will bridge the transaction gap between men and women in Africa.

Michael Wiegand, Director of the Financial Services For The Poor Programme at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, posits that financial inclusion achieved through digital financial service models is simultaneously a powerful antipoverty strategy and a catalyst of sustainable economic development for national and regional economies.

The AFDI’s opening project which will serve as a pilot for the fund is $11.3million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to the Bank and the ECOWAS Central Bank. The grant will create an interoperable digital payment system that allows consumers to send and receive money between mobile wallets, and from these wallets to other digital and bank accounts.

The AFDI will utilize banks and non bank financial institutions, mobile network operators, remittance and payment service providers, fintech companies, government ministries, regulatory bodies as well as regional economic organizations to drive access.

It is estimated that only about 43 percent of Africans have bank accounts and interventions like the AFDI are timely and necessary to fix this friction in provision of access to financial services.
