The Roadmap To Prosperity And Sustainable Growth In Africa

0

Microelectronics is the most dominant technology in our world, but it does not have a creative presence in Africa. Without it, there is no ICT. It matters so much that US, Canada, Japan and Europe have integrated foundry projects for their students.

It is the gunpowder of the knowledge economy army. Without it, you lose the battle of global competition. Africa must develop its microelectronics industry, organically, from bottom-up. And we mean students for continuity and sustainability management. Microelectronics is the engine that drives the information age and without its constant evolution, ICT cannot advance.

In this campaign, we want to help establish at least one world-class microelectronics institute and ten microelectronics labs in the continent within five years.

We will form African Microelectronics Network to enable SMEs and universities share and network design kits, process data, and technology files. This is the major way to creatively improve Africa’s Knowledge Economy Index (KEI) and move Africa forward by designing and manufacturing ICT products, over mere importation of them.

Preamble to the Roadmap

This document is prepared to enable African stakeholders understand what it would take to establish a microelectronics institute in any African university with already existing engineering and science programs. A more comprehensive version of this document has been submitted to World Bank and other international organizations for grants in partnerships with universities we have assisted to develop grants in this area.

It is provided to offer clarity on what a typical budget and microelectronics benefits are in training and educating the next generation of African leaders. If you have the resources to fund a microelectronics institute, we will help to execute it with absolute commitment to quality.

Our proposals are structured to be profit-centers and never cost-centers and they survive through organic growth. It is engineered under the tripod partnerships of SMEs, universities and governments.

If you have the means to make this roadmap a reality in any part of Africa, let us know. The ideas are here, but funding is nowhere.

LG Optimus 3D – The World’s First 3D Smartphone, Now Playing

0

The LG Optimus 3D is a beast. And as the name suggests, it uses the 3D technology. It is perhaps the world’s first in this category. Launched in the last  Mobile World Congress, 14th to 17th February at Barcelona, it made waves all over the blogsphere. You can get one at Amazon now.

With this 3D phone, one can take photos and load them easily. It uses a dual camera system to take the Left and Right and then merge them. The photo comes as a 3D image. The Optimus comes with 1GHz  OMAP4 (Open Multimedia Application Platform Version 4) dual-core processor from Texas Instruments, a dual-channel memory to ensure users have enough power to work on 3D video on the handset. Users get the chance to share 3D videos and pictures via wireless and wired connectors, all and including High Definition Multimedia Interface.

It is also Digital Living Network Alliance networking certified which means that it uses standards-based technology to make it easier for consumers to use, share and enjoy their digital photos, music and videos.

The Optimus 3D runs on Android OS 2.2  and 4.3-inch full touch-screen that lets users view 3D images and video without using the custom 3D glasses. This phone is massively promoted in Youtube as the LG and Youtube  signed a partnership deal.  In a joint statement by the two companies, they said,

“The new partnership is part of a broader push into 3D entertainment by LG and the world’s largest online video community. YouTube and LG collaborated to enable the delivery and sharing of 3D video onto mobile devices in a way that makes it simple and easy for consumers.”

Samsung Series 3 350U2A Notebook Arrives Nigeria

0

Samsung has unveiled a new laptop in Nigerian market. It is the popular series 3 350U2A notebook and is a great product if one is choosing a laptop for authors or writers. The product is thin and light, weighing just about 1.3kg. It also has a distinctive feature of novelty – the display with a thin frame, through which the visible screen area is increased without sacrificing mobility.

In addition, its design incorporates a bezel display, so users can get all the benefits of a larger screen without having to sacrifice portability. Chioma Iwuchukwu-Nweke, of Samsung Electronics West Africa noted,

“When you need to get things done on the move, but still want to look good then the product is the perfect choice,

As well as boasting an extremely thin and light design, with a stylish slim bezel display and choice of vivid colors, it’s also packed with the latest mobile technology for optimized performance and ease of use on the go”

Notebook display has a reflective coating, and the time of the laptop Samsung 350U2A up to 7.4 hours, it is equipped with an Intel Core i3/i5, running Windows 7 and supports Samsung Fast Start. Smart technology allows Samsung PowerPlus save 80% of original battery capacity even after a thousand recharges.

This is three times greater than that of conventional batteries for laptops. Moreover, the laptop does not have to wait the usual 30-60 seconds needed to boot the operating system, thanks to quick-start technology Samsung Fast Start. This hybrid standby mode allows the user to start the computer in a few seconds after opening the lid or pressing the power button.

3rd Global Peter Drucker Forum 2011 – Call For Essay Contribution

0

“Management is the specific and distinguishing organ of any and all organizations.” – Peter F. Drucker

NEW ENTRY DEADLINE: AUGUST 15th, 2011

The Peter Drucker Society Europe (PDSE) invites students, young managers and young entrepreneurs until the age of 35 to take part in the “2nd Global Peter Drucker Challenge” essay contest. The authors of the top three essays will be flown to Vienna and invited to actively participate in panels and breakouts at the “3rd Global Peter Drucker Forum 2011” in Vienna on November 3 and 4. In addition, up to 40 authors of high quality essays will get free access to the conference.

The essay contest has the overarching theme.

MANAGEMENT, WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR? (Plenty, we think! But what do YOU think?)

Senior managers around the world have hit the headlines with high salaries, failing corporations, controversial downsizing programmes and an apparent focus on profit rather than people – usually earning criticism rather than plaudits. Middle managers, too, have gradually found themselves increasingly undermined and even dispensed with altogether, as technology enables skilled teams and individuals to manage themselves.

So is management now a tarnished word? And can skilled teams now really do away with management completely?

Peter F. Drucker (1909-2005), the “father of modern management” and a harsh critic of a greed-driven economy, described this emergence of self-empowered specialists in his 1999 book “Management Challenges for the 21st Century”. In it, Drucker also insisted that we should not confine our view of management as applying to businesses only. Instead, he argues, management is a key function of all levels of modern society. “Ours,” he writes, “is a society of organizations. And management is the specific and distinguishing organ of any and all organizations.”

Good management, then, is even more important in today’s world. It has the potential to be the key to dealing with the societal complexities and challenges we all face.

So – just what is good management? How do you define and describe it? And is good management a means in itself? Does it have to have a purpose, too, and can it ever be separated from the social and common good? What do you think?

This is your opportunity to share your perspectives and experiences!

Guidelines
Participants must not to be older than 35 years. The length of the essays should be between 1.500 words and 3.000 words (which roughly translates into 5-10 pages). Essays can be submitted in both English and German – the two languages Peter Drucker wrote his articles and books in. The new deadline for submitting the essays is August 15th, 2011.

What is the prize?

Windows 7 Rocks On Swahili – Microsoft, When Is One Coming for Igbo, Hause And Yoruba?

0

Today, we tested a Windows 7 will Swahili, actually Kiswahili option. It is a really good job from the Microsifites.  Many had praised this marginal innovation though it is not clear how many Africans will sign up for this when English is the sin qua non.

The GM of East and Southern Africa Microsoft, Louis Otieno, has praised the product at launch. He also noted the investment in R&D in Microsoft to get more more across the globe as they ramp up new products and features in Microsoft  (now that Chrome is emerging as a competitor). Africa continues to play a role and Kenya is central for Microsoft East African strategy.

“This past year, Kenyan companies concentrated on laying down the infrastructure needed to move the ICT sector to greater heights. This year should be the one that these same companies concentrate on using the infrastructure they laid down last year to improve themselves in terms of accelerated consumption of services and driven growth.”

“With the arrival of the new constitution and impending devolution of resources, we are going to see a lot of changes in terms of use of cloud computing. We believe that it is a much needed gear-change from the conventional use of tools and architectures that tie us down to one location. We are moving towards an era where users will want to move with their data and the faster we can enable this the faster we shall grow in the ICT world. This is certain to bring about a boost in GDP and a stronger backbone to the economy.” He added.

It was reported that no Tanzanian was involved in this translation. They said it took 50 days. Working with linguistics and using online collaboration tool, a team of engineers worked on this from different countries, mainly Kenya and South Africa.  A Microsoft partner, Mpasua Msonobari,  noted

“Absolutely no Tanzanians were involved in the translation of this new interface. This was done by Kenyans and goes on to show that there is a big community of Swahili speakers living in Kenya. ”

The software is available for only legal versions of Windows and it can be downloaded from Windows site ( search for the language under  downloads).  It is expected that Office 2010 in Swahili will debut this year also.
