Strategy Posts Record $21 Billion Operating Income as Bitcoin Holdings Drive Massive Q3 Gains

Strategy, the world’s first Bitcoin Treasury Company and largest institutional holder of Bitcoin, reported third-quarter (Q3) 2026 results that were dominated by unrealized gains on its digital asset holdings.

Operating income reached $20.91 billion for the three months ended September 30, 2026, compared with $3.89 billion a year earlier. Nearly the entire figure came from a $20.91 billion fair-value gain on the company’s bitcoin position.

Diluted earnings per share came in at $44.75, while net income totaled $19.53 billion. Net income attributable to common stockholders was $19.12 billion after preferred stock dividends of roughly $420 million.

These figures stand in sharp contrast to the company’s traditional software business, which generated $125.4 million in revenue, a 3% decline from the same period in 2025. Gross profit held steady at $89.6 million with a 71% margin.

As of October 25, 2026, Strategy held approximately 848,517 bitcoin. The coins carry an original cost basis of $64.02 billion, or an average of about $75,446 each, and a market value of roughly $68.9 billion based on a bitcoin price near $81,200.

Holdings have grown 26% year-to-date. The company raised more than $21 billion in capital during 2026, ranking among the largest equity issuers in the United States, and continued refining its preferred stock capital structure.

Management highlighted progress on liquidity and preferred securities. Strategy grew its U.S. dollar assets to approximately $5.07 billion, providing more than three years of coverage for dividend and interest obligations.

It also repurchased about $2 billion of its STRC preferred stock and received shareholder approval to shift several preferred series to daily dividend accrual beginning in November 2026 and January 2027.

Founder and Executive Chairman Michael Saylor pointed to improving institutional demand for bitcoin and described the quarter as the start of a new bull market phase.

Strategy impressive third quarter report, comes as Bitcoin is facing renewed uncertainty as the cryptocurrency struggles to sustain its recovery around $80,000, raising questions about whether the market has entered a new bull run or remains trapped in a prolonged period of consolidation.

As of October 29, 2026, Bitcoin was trading around $79,000–$81,000, following a period of volatility that saw the asset briefly fall below the $80,000 threshold.

Despite renewed institutional demand, the cryptocurrency has struggled to maintain upward momentum, with analysts identifying the $84,000–$85,000 range as a major resistance zone.

The current market environment presents a mixed picture. While recent price movements suggest that buyers are attempting to establish a recovery, persistent selling pressure and uncertainty surrounding US monetary policy continue to weigh on investor sentiment.

Bitcoin’s recent performance has placed the cryptocurrency at a critical point in its market cycle. Following its recovery from the lows recorded earlier in the year, the asset has struggled to establish a sustained upward trend.

Market analysts have identified $85,000 as an important resistance level, noting that Bitcoin has repeatedly failed to maintain positions above this threshold.

According to analysis from Glassnode reported on October 29, Bitcoin had closed above $85,000 on only five days since January, without sustaining the breakout for more than three consecutive days.

A more convincing bullish trend would require Bitcoin to break through resistance, establish higher highs and higher lows, and attract sustained buying demand. Stronger trading volume and continued institutional inflows would provide additional evidence that the recovery is becoming more durable.

Until those conditions emerge, the market could continue moving sideways or experience another correction before establishing a clearer direction.

Amidst Bitcoin price action, Strategy President and CEO Phong Le emphasized the company’s focus on strengthening its digital credit instruments and building for a 24/7 financial system.

Chief Financial Officer Andrew Kang will step down effective November 5, 2026, remaining in an advisory role through year-end. President and CEO Phong Le will oversee finance during the transition, with Reza Virasteh set to assume the CFO role in early 2027.

Strategy’s results once again illustrate how fair-value accounting for bitcoin can produce extreme quarterly swings. While the software analytics business continues to operate at a modest scale, the company’s identity and financial performance remain tightly linked to the size and price movements of its bitcoin treasury.

Investors will watch upcoming capital allocation decisions, bitcoin purchase activity, and the performance of the preferred stock complex as the company navigates the next phase of its strategy.
