Educating Rural Farmers For Productivity

Making Agribusiness Work For Smallholders

If you are like me that did Geography in secondary school, you must have known more about Chicago, Boston and New York than Nairobi, Bamako and Accra because the physical and human geography textbook by Goh Cheng Leong was outsourced from U.S. Possibly, no African professor wrote any for WAEC to recommend!

Thinking of that, Nicholas Alifa writes that agribusiness needs to be redesigned to work for small farmers in Nigeria. Indeed, you enter our agriculture programs in our schools, you learn about big farm processes. Yet, more that 80% of our food elements are from small farmers in rural areas.

If you check, the books were imported and written for American and European farmers with limited relationship on what is happening outside the school environments. Despite all they taught you on pesticides and insecticides, have you ever seen one in your village?  Yet, no one has figured out how to really educate on what the rural farmers are farming on.
