Gemma Chan Provides an Open Statement on the Sequel to Crazy Rich Asians.

Gemma Chan is quite optimistic. In fact, the star of Crazy Rich Asians gave a candid update on the progress of the eagerly anticipated follow-up to the 2018 romantic comedy in which she portrayed chic heiress Astrid Leong.

"I wish I had some juicy info," at the July 8 premiere of The Five Star Weekend, she acknowledged this in a confidential conversation with media agencies. "I'm the last person to find out."

"There's so much to live up to," Chan went on to say. "It's been a while now, so everything has to be as good as [the first film], if not better."

However, the 43-year-old is holding out hope that she may be able to wear Astrid's high-end shoes once more.

Following all, she said, "I'm hopeful that things are going to align."

What would she like to see for her character in a future movie?

"I want to see what happens with her and Charlie," Chan mentioned Charlie Wu, played by Harry Shum Jr., whose possible romance with Astrid was hinted at in the movie's mid-credits sequence. "I want to see her come into her own."

Fans and celebrities have expressed their desire for a sequel to Crazy Rich Asians in the years after its premiere.

However, a number of obstacles have caused a years-long delay for the proposed second film in the franchise, which is based on a remake of Kevin Kwan's best-selling book trio.

Who would write the script was one problem. Adele Lim, the initial screenwriter, apparently quit the movie due to an alleged salary difference with co-author Peter Chiarelli.

The delay also seems to be caused by the actors' hectic schedules. After all, a number of celebrities, including Wu, Chan, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, and Constance Wu, rose to fame as a result of Crazy Rich Asians.

Additionally, Chu, who previously directed Wicked, says that coordinating the cast's schedules is of utmost importance.

"I won’t bring everyone back unless it’s worth it," Chu said this on a Crew Call podcast episode from Deadline in November 2024. "There’s too much on the line for everybody."

However, the director revealed last year that Crazy Rich Asians 2 was still in the works.

"We’re working on it," in April 2025, Chu informed news sources. "But we’re working on a Max show as well with some of the other stories as it goes along. I won’t say too much, but there are things that are moving."

In fact, there are more Crazy Rich Asians projects under development, such as an HBO television series that was revealed last year and a Broadway musical adaptation of the film.
