HBO has officially announced JAŸ-Z IN 8, an eight-part original documentary series chronicling the life, music, and legacy of hip-hop icon JAY-Z. Directed by legendary producer Rick Rubin, the series is set to premiere this fall on HBO and stream on HBO Max.
The project reunites Rubin and JAY-Z more than two decades after they collaborated on the rapper's acclaimed 2003 hit "99 Problems" from The Black Album. This time, the pair come together for a series of intimate conversations exploring JAY-Z's artistic journey, personal experiences, and creative philosophy.

The announcement was made on June 25, accompanied by a teaser shared across social media by HBO Max, JAY-Z, and Rick Rubin, giving fans a first look at the documentary's minimalist, conversation-driven format.
Produced by Tetragrammaton, the series boasts an impressive production team. Executive producers include Shawn "JAY-Z" Carter, Rick Rubin, and Academy Award-winning actor Daniel Kaluuya, while Leila Mattimore and David Rohde serve as producers.
Inspired by the stripped-down style of Rubin's acclaimed 2021 interview series McCartney 3,2,1, JAŸ-Z IN 8 places the rapper face-to-face with Rubin, allowing him to reflect on decades of music, lyrics, success, and personal growth without relying on narration or outside commentary.
The black-and-white teaser captures the reflective tone of the series as the two discuss turning adversity into art. During one exchange, Rubin remarks that without pain, JAY-Z might never have created his life's work. JAY-Z responds that while pain isn't something to seek, "if it's there... you use it," highlighting one of the documentary's central themes.

The teaser concludes with the title JAŸ-Z IN 8 appearing on screen as the opening bassline of JAY-Z's 1996 debut single "Can't Knock the Hustle" begins to play, paying tribute to the start of his legendary career.

The documentary arrives during a landmark year for the Brooklyn rapper, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of his debut album Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint. Alongside the series, JAY-Z is celebrating with a run of special live performances, including a headline appearance at the Roots Picnic, a three-night stadium residency at Yankee Stadium dedicated to different eras of his catalog, and additional shows in Paris and Los Angeles later this year.
While HBO has yet to announce an exact premiere date, JAŸ-Z IN 8 is expected to debut this fall. With a highly anticipated documentary and major live performances on the calendar, the series is poised to become one of the defining music events of 2026, offering fans an unprecedented look into the life and legacy of one of hip-hop's greatest artists.
