Healthcare is now a big luxury in Nigeria
Quote from Ndubuisi Ekekwe on October 28, 2024, 6:59 AM
Going to see a doctor has been a luxury in Nigeria. But these days, with food being the bigger luxury product, hospitals are shutting down: "Nigeria's private healthcare sector seems to be the latest casualty of Nigeria's sweeping economic reforms that has impacted nearly all sectors of the economy, as no fewer than 50 percent of private hospitals have shut down, with the remaining facilities struggling to stay afloat amidst surging operational costs.
"The Guild of Medical Directors (GMD) made this alarming revelation that casts a shadow over the sustainability of healthcare services in the country, as hospitals grapple with increasing financial burdens and deteriorating patient patronage."
Indeed, the best medicine now is food. But it must not be this way, and I call on the government to push whatever savings the nation is getting from the removal of the subsidies or Naira floating to reach the citizens.
