Miley Cyrus recently opened up about her family's "dark decade" and how she worked to mend relationships, particularly with her father, Billy Ray Cyrus. She revealed that at one point, half of her family members weren’t speaking to each other, but she took the initiative to rebuild communication and bring everyone back together.
"What did you call your decade? Dark decade?" on the June 10 edition of the former White House intern's Reclaiming podcast, Miley asked Monica Lewinsky. "Yeah, we had one of those."

“Half of us weren't speaking to each other at one point," Continuing, the 32-year-old, sister of Noah Cyrus, 25, Braison Cyrus, 31, Christopher Cyrus, 33, Trace Cyrus, 36, and Brandi Cyrus, 38 "and we cleaned all that up."
Miley explained that tensions had been brewing for years, especially after her parents' divorce in 2022. She felt a strong loyalty to her mother, Tish Cyrus, and witnessed firsthand how unresolved issues can pile up over time. Instead of opting for therapy, she decided to break through the emotional barriers by simply spending time with her dad and fostering joy before diving into deeper conversations.
The Disney Channel alum noted, "In that situation, I watched what happens when you don't clean things up as they're happening."
"They really do stack, and then all of a sudden you go, ‘Oh my god, it's been 10 years, and this is a mess that I barely even know how to start,'" she clarified. "This is emotional hoarding.”
How exactly did Miley and her father begin again?
"I just kind of bust through the pile that’s stacked, and just go, ‘I’m here. You’re here. Let’s start by having a good time together,'" she revealed. "And then as we start bringing some happiness and joy into each other's life, then we'll just be in a better place to have these conversations. Cause I'd rather get it balanced first."
She humorously noted that getting her family into a room for counseling would have been a "war," so she chose a more organic approach—raising a "white flag" and creating a safe space for open dialogue. Now, in her thirties, Miley says family is her priority, and she’s grateful for the healing that has taken place.
“We’re so messy we didn’t even do any of that,” she made a joke about family therapy.
Miley went on, "I always wanted my family to feel like I was the safe place that I always had the white flag when they came to talk to me."
