Nirvana to Receive Video Vanguard Award at MTV VMAs 2026.
At the 2026 MTV VMAs, the '90s are expected to be in full swing. Nirvana will be recognized for their legendary status in rock history as the year's Video Vanguard Award winner at the music awards ceremony, which will be hosted by Snoop Dogg on September 27.
"This day in 1992, Nirvana took to the VMAs stage for the first time—shaping music, culture and MTV forever," the network made this news on Instagram on September 9. "Nirvana is our 2026 #VMAs Video Vanguard recipient!!!"
In fact, the '90s grunge group, which is most known for its main members Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl, has experienced numerous historic moments on MTV. They recorded a live recording of MTV Unplugged in 1993, which was subsequently released as an album and became a prestigious addition to their discography.

Fans were first introduced to the then-up-and-coming group during an avant-garde pep rally in the music video channel for the Nevermind artists' biggest single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from 1991.
The band's third and last studio album, In Utero, was released in 1993 after years of chart-topping songs including "Lithium," "Come as You Are," and "In Bloom." Lead vocalist Cobain tragically passed away at his Seattle home six months later, and the King County Medical Examiner determined that it was a suicide.
His remaining bandmates have since paid tribute to Cobain, who is the father of Frances Bean Cobain and his wife Courtney Love, as well as the musical legacy they created together. Grohl, Novoselic, and guitarist Pat Smear performed together at the FireAid Benefit Concert and SNL50 in 2025. Grohl talked about how getting back together has strengthened their relationship.
"Sometimes when people think of bands, they just think of instruments and songs and stuff, but it really is, it's this connection of people and life experience and relationships with other human beings," in May, the frontman of Foo Fighters stated this on The Colbert Show. "And then you put on guitars and play music, and that translates your love and respect and the relationship you have with the other person, it really comes through the music."
