No Human is Civilized, But Some Environments Are
Whenever you see the word “civilized”, do not pay too much attention to it. Humans are the same. What is different is the environment. A few years ago, in California, in a breakfast with former US Vice President Al Gore, I asked him a question: Vice President Sir, why do US energy companies pollute Nigeria when they cannot do the same in Texas? He responded: they can do it and get away because your leaders are weak to hold them accountable. Yes, they do it!
Yes, human systems are the same; only environments make us special. What happened at the US Capitol today reminds me of what we see in Yemen, Somalia and you name them. The only difference is that American founders and ancestors have made America amazing that this act is not a steady state condition; it will pass.
For Nigeria, we wish we had founding leaders who provided a productive template. As information asymmetry disappears in political discourse with people using social media to have the same influence that would have required buying TV airwaves for weeks, social order would be tested.
