Patrick Mahomes Opens Up on ACL Recovery, Admits Injury Could Have Lasting Effects.

Although Patrick Mahomes will utilize his knee, he won't allow it to hold him. The Kansas City Chiefs athlete provided an update on his recuperation six months after tearing his ACL and having to terminate the 2025–2026 football season promptly.

“The process isn’t over,” according to ESPN, Mahomes told reporters on July 24 at the Chiefs' training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, that he had surgery in December to fix his left knee's ACL and LCL. “It’ll be something I’ll probably be dealing with the next few years of my career and throughout the rest of my career.”

However, the 30-year-old, who is married to Brittany Mahomes and has three children, Sterling, 5, Bronze, 3, and Golden, 18 months, feels prepared to play this autumn.

“I feel amazing,” Mahomes gave his word. “I'm excited just to be able to play football.”

In fact, the quarterback has been devoting all of his attention to getting cleared to play when the Chiefs play their first game on September 14 against the Denver Broncos.

“I've been seeing cinderblock walls rehabbing every single day in Kansas City,” he continued. “Now, to be on that practice field with my teammates, it's going to be a lot of fun.”

Mahomes may be preparing for his best season yet, even though his injury may define the remainder of his playing career.

“I feel stronger than I've ever felt, as far as strength and lifting,” he thought about it. “I feel comfortable now being able to go out there and run the offense the way offense is supposed to run.”

However, Mahomes, who last month agreed to a $500 million two-year deal extension with the Chiefs, acknowledged, “This will be the hardest training camp that you can have, as far as preparing for the season.”

Additionally, course, the pressure will be a part of that challenge. Following all, Mahomes' eligibility to start at quarterback is still as uncertain as a Hail Mary pass.

“I’m going to want to be out there,” he went on to say. “But I understand the process of getting myself ready to play in the regular season is more important. We'll see. The coaches and doctors will make that decision for me, but I'll prepare myself like I'm going to play.”

Andy Reid, the head coach of the Chiefs, is reluctant to give a firm response on Mahomes' readiness for kickoff in September.

"He's been working so hard that you have a pretty good feel that he's in a good place," Reid informed the media. “We've got to see how things go and not make any predictions.”
