Redesigning the Certificated Public Sector

Nigerian Labour Market Needs Skills Not Certificates

It is one of the highest levels of unfairness in Nigeria: HND in one side, BSc in another with capabilities thrown out. Provided you have your university degree, you can relax because the immunity is intact irrespective of your productivity. The other unfairness is the craze that people must have certificates for every job.

In this piece, Samuel Nwite has a fresh perspective: if the presidential tribunal noted that Mr. President is qualified to lead Nigeria by virtue of his military training, WASC/GCE or not, it means our public sector must consider alternative preparations over just certificates as they recruit.

"The Presidential Petition Tribunal (PEPT) recent ruling on the qualification for the most important office in the country has, in a way, discredited the certificate norm that has ruled the labor market for so long. If the president doesn’t need a certificate to rule a country of 200 million people, why should a ... graduate be denied employment just because he has a 3rd class?"
