A significant political figure has left the United States. Republican George W. Bush's 46th vice president, Richard "Dick" B. Cheney, passed away on November 3, according to his family. He was eighty-four.
"His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed," NBC News was given the statement. "The former Vice President died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease."
His relatives wrote about his public legacy, “For decades, Dick Cheney served our nation, including as White House Chief of Staff, Wyoming’s Congressman, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President of the United States."
Cheney's family members also thought about the legacy he was leaving behind.
"Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country," they caption, "and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing. We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country."
Although the Nebraska native's political career started in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1979 and continued for four years under George H. W. Bush as Secretary of Defense starting in 1989, his term as the younger George W. Bush's vice president is arguably what most people remember him for.
As Bush's running mate through two victorious presidential campaigns, Cheney—who is often considered the most powerful vice president—served as the president's most important advisor during the "war on terror."
After a Senate Intelligence Committee investigation exposed some of the CIA's enhanced interrogation techniques, the political age that saw the wars of Afghanistan and Iraq in the wake of the September 11th attacks was not without controversy.
Regarding Cheney, in 2014 he revealed to Fox News, "I think what needed to be done was done. I think we were perfectly justified in doing it. And I'd do it again in a minute."
Despite being a devoted Republican for decades of his political career, the former vice president declared in September 2024 that he would be voting for Kamala Harris rather than Donald Trump.
“He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him," at the moment, Cheney claimed in a statement. "He can never be trusted with power again."
“As citizens, we each have a duty to put country above partisanship to defend our constitution," he went on. "That is why I will be casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.”
