The Statue of Liberty was transformed into a breathtaking display of projection mapping, synchronized lasers, and an original electronic soundtrack during a 15-minute production titled "Liberty Lights," honoring 250 years of American independence.

Released publicly on July 3, the broadcast served as the official lead-in to the nation's Independence Day celebrations, building anticipation for July 4 while highlighting the enduring ideals that have shaped the United States since its founding. The timing also underscored the approaching semiquincentennial, using one of America's most recognizable landmarks to celebrate both the country's history and its future.

The event aired on ABC through its New York affiliate, ABC7NY, and was led by the French Consulate General in New York, paying tribute to France's enduring friendship with the United States and its historic 1886 gift of the Statue of Liberty.

Bringing the ambitious production to life on Liberty Island was no small task. The remote harbor location required months of planning and highly specialized technical coordination.

French DJ and electronic music producer Michael Canitrot, who conceived the musical performance and has previously staged landmark productions at the Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame Cathedral, described the project as the most technically demanding of his career.

The show relied on advanced DMX lighting control, precision projection mapping across the statue's weathered copper surface, and high-powered laser systems designed to remain visible despite New York City's bright skyline. Rich blue lighting highlighted Lady Liberty's crown while brilliant white laser beams extended above the torch, creating a dramatic visual centerpiece. Between the large-scale effects, viewers also saw intimate performances from a pianist playing live on Liberty Island as part of the original score.

The production was developed through a partnership between Monumental Tour and Auditoire, combining artistic storytelling with cutting-edge event technology.

Filmed in advance of its television broadcast, the private event welcomed around 250 invited guests, including U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon. Organizers said the project was fully funded through corporate sponsorships.

Beyond its impressive visuals, the event also carried strong diplomatic symbolism. French Consul General Cedrik Fouriscot said the performance reflected the lasting partnership between France and the United States.

He noted that when both nations work together—as they did in creating the Statue of Liberty and now through this celebration—they can produce moments that leave a lasting impact. The performance was designed to honor the shared values of liberty, hope, openness, and progress, reinforcing the principles that continue to unite both nations nearly 140 years after the Statue of Liberty was dedicated.

Some people who gathered along the waterfront expecting to watch the light show live were disappointed after learning the production had been pre-recorded for broadcast, highlighting the difference between the televised event and public expectations.
