Tony Romo Opens Up About Alcohol and Pain Medication Dependence Before OWI Arrest.
Tony Romo is openly discussing a different aspect of his post-career phase. The 46-year-old NFL star admitted in a statement that he entered a "no contest" plea to the OWI civil offence, which he described as "a recent personal failure," more than a month after he was detained in Wisconsin for operating a car while intoxicated.
Romo isn't avoiding accountability either, saying, "I own this completely," in a message posted on social media on September 1.
The previous quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys also talked about his life after leaving the NFL and how his injuries caused him to turn to drugs as a coping mechanism.

“Multiple back surgeries ended my career earlier than I expected and left me with constant, debilitating pain,” he clarified. “That pain led to a dependence on pain medication, and my efforts to get off those medications led to an over-reliance on alcohol.”
Romo, who is married to Candice Crawford and has three sons, is optimistic about the future.
Additionally, he is ensuring that he has the appropriate players on his side for the upcoming action.
“As I have taught my three young sons,” he went on, “when you fall short, you stand up and take full responsibility. That is an important first step. The harder and more important step is examining the path that brought you here and making the changes necessary to move forward.”
“The past month has been difficult, but it has also been personally significant,” Romo highlighted. “I am working closely with a team of doctors to address my health and make the necessary changes. I am deeply grateful for the support of my family, my friends, and the NFL community including players, coaches, and owners. Your encouragement has meant more to me than you know.”
In addition, he learned valuable lessons from his time in the league that he will always remember.
“Playing taught me the power of relationships, the strength of a team, and the toughness to face failure head-on with honesty, resilience, and the determination to do better,” he went on to say. “This is one of those moments when I am leaning on everything football taught me.”
Regarding his future with CBS Sports, where he worked as a commentator for the previous nine years until being put on temporary leave following his arrest, Romo is eager to get things back on pace.
“As I turn my attention to my health, my family, and, in time, my return to CBS,” he continued, “I kindly ask for privacy during this period.”
Despite all, he has always been really happy in his position at CBS, which he described in his statement as a "profound honour."
“For me, it is always making the viewer learn something or enjoy the telecast,” in July, he informed TMJ4. “It's their team. This is a huge deal. I always want them to understand.”
