India’s Tech Mahindra Partners With SpaceX’s AI Division to Modernize Legacy Software

Indian IT services provider Tech Mahindra said on Thursday it has partnered with SpaceX’s AI division to help businesses modernize legacy applications, accelerate software development and deploy industry-specific artificial intelligence solutions.

The collaboration will bring Grok Build into Tech Mahindra’s technology services, enabling the company to develop AI-powered solutions for clients across sectors including technology, telecommunications, banking and financial services.

The partnership marks Tech Mahindra’s first collaboration with the AI division of SpaceX, the rocket and satellite company led by Elon Musk. The Indian IT major already has similar partnerships involving Google’s Gemini and Microsoft’s AI technologies, highlighting its efforts to expand the range of AI tools available to enterprise customers.

The agreement comes as IT services companies face growing pressure to demonstrate that generative AI can deliver measurable productivity gains, reduce software development costs, and help customers update older technology systems. For service providers, partnerships with AI developers offer access to new capabilities, but they also intensify competition over how much value companies can capture as AI automates parts of traditional software engineering work.

Many large businesses continue to depend on legacy applications that are expensive to maintain, difficult to integrate with modern platforms, and costly to replace. Modernizing these systems can involve analyzing existing code, identifying dependencies, rewriting components, and testing changes without disrupting essential operations.

AI-assisted development tools can help automate portions of that process, potentially shortening development cycles and reducing the manual effort required to understand and update complex software. Tech Mahindra’s partnership with SpaceX’s AI division is intended to support that transition while helping businesses build solutions tailored to their industries.

The focus on sector-specific applications is significant because enterprise AI adoption often requires more than access to a general-purpose model or coding assistant. Businesses must integrate AI tools with existing workflows, data systems, security requirements, and regulatory obligations. IT services firms can play a role in that process by combining AI capabilities with implementation, systems integration, and industry expertise.

However, the commercial impact will depend on how effectively the tools perform in production environments. Legacy modernization projects can involve undocumented code, complicated dependencies, and strict requirements for reliability. AI-generated code still requires validation, security checks, and human oversight, particularly in sectors such as banking and telecommunications, where software failures can disrupt critical services.

Tech Mahindra’s existing relationships involving Google Gemini and Microsoft indicate that it is pursuing multiple AI technology partnerships rather than relying on a single provider. Adding SpaceX’s AI division expands that portfolio and gives the company another potential set of tools for enterprise software development.

Partnerships with established IT services companies can provide a route into large organizations that need help deploying new technology. For service providers, access to competing platforms can offer flexibility when matching tools to customer requirements.

The arrangement also reflects a broader shift in the IT services industry. As AI tools take on more coding and application-development tasks, traditional providers face pressure to rethink delivery models that have historically relied heavily on engineering hours and large teams. Faster development could improve productivity and margins, but it could also reduce the amount of labor required for some projects and change how vendors price their services.

Tech Mahindra did not provide financial details of the partnership in the announcement supplied, including a revenue target, investment commitment, or expected contribution to earnings. Therefore, the extent of the commercial opportunity is expected to hinge on customer adoption, the performance of Grok Build and the company’s ability to turn the collaboration into paid projects.

However, the partnership establishes another route for Tech Mahindra to incorporate AI into enterprise modernization. But its longer-term value is expected to be determined less by the number of AI alliances it signs than by the chance of those tools to help customers modernize complex systems faster, at lower cost and with sufficient reliability for business-critical applications.
