OpenAI Raises $11 Billion at $1.25 Trillion Valuation Amid Cooling AI Market

Artificial Intelligence company OpenAI has closed on roughly $11 billion in new funding, the first tranche of a larger round that values the company at $1.25 trillion.

The $11 billion represents an initial tranche of a financing that could grow to as much as $20 billion in the coming weeks.

OpenAI originally aimed to raise $30 billion or more at a valuation of around $1.4 trillion to $1.5 trillion before scaling back.

The adjustment came as public markets for AI-related stocks experienced a sell-off and investors grew more cautious about the sector’s heavy spending on data centers and computing infrastructure.

Investors participating in the first close include Coatue Management and T. Rowe Price. Other backers in the broader round include SoftBank Group, Sequoia Capital, Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, and a syndicate of investors from the United Arab Emirates linked to MGX.

OpenAI is also working with banks to bring in high-net-worth and potentially retail investors at the same valuation. The company declined to comment on the reports.

This latest raise follows OpenAI’s record $122 billion funding round in March 2026, which valued the company at $852 billion. The jump to $1.25 trillion still marks a substantial increase and positions OpenAI as one of the most valuable private companies in the world.

The company has delayed its initial public offering plans and has filed confidential paperwork, with executives indicating a possible public listing in 2027.

The funding arrives at a moment of shifting sentiment in the AI industry. Rival Anthropic has also faced downward pressure on its expected IPO valuation, with some investors now viewing figures closer to $1.5 trillion as more realistic than earlier targets near $2 trillion.

Concerns about the sustainability of massive capital expenditures on AI infrastructure have tempered the exuberance that defined earlier funding cycles.

Even with the reduced size and valuation targets, the $11 billion infusion provides OpenAI with significant resources to continue expanding its computing capacity and advancing its models.

The deal underscores that while investor appetite has cooled from its peak, demand for exposure to leading frontier AI labs remains strong among major institutional players.

From AI research laboratory to global technology powerhouse

Founded in 2015 by Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, and other technology entrepreneurs, OpenAI initially operated as an artificial intelligence research organisation focused on developing advanced AI systems that could benefit humanity.

However, the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022 fundamentally changed the company’s trajectory. The chatbot quickly attracted millions of users by making sophisticated AI capabilities accessible through ordinary conversations.

Its adoption accelerated the commercialisation of generative AI, creating new opportunities across software development, education, financial services, healthcare, customer support and enterprise operations.

ChatGPT has since evolved beyond a conversational chatbot into a broader AI platform offering advanced reasoning, image generation, voice interactions, web search, data analysis and coding capabilities.

The company’s growth has also been reflected in its user numbers. OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly active ChatGPT users and over 50 million paying subscribers in March 2026.

By November, reports citing company executives indicated that weekly active users had reached approximately 1.2 billion.

Beyond its growing user base, OpenAI has recorded significant commercial progress, transforming consumer adoption into multiple revenue streams.

The company disclosed in March 2026 that it was generating approximately $2 billion in monthly revenue, representing a substantial increase from the $1 billion in quarterly revenue it recorded by the end of 2024.

Its business model has expanded beyond ChatGPT subscriptions to include enterprise software, developer APIs, AI coding tools and advertising.

Corporate adoption has become particularly important to its expansion. Businesses increasingly rely on OpenAI’s technology to automate workflows, develop software, analyse information and improve operational efficiency.

Outlook

OpenAI’s latest valuation reflects investor expectations about the future commercial potential of artificial intelligence and the company’s position in the emerging market.

Ultimately, OpenAI’s journey from a research-focused organisation in 2015 to a company valued at $1.25 trillion in 2026 illustrates the speed at which artificial intelligence has evolved into a major commercial industry.
