OpenAI Unveils New AI-Powered Feature “Deep Research” to Assist Users in Advanced Task

OpenAI, an Artificial Intelligence research organization, has announced the roll-out of a new AI-powered feature called “Deep Research” with ChatGPT, to assist users in handling complex tasks.

Deep research uses reasoning to synthesize large amounts of online information and complete multi-step research tasks for users. This feature is available to Pro users today, with subsequent roll-out to Plus and Team users. Also, it is available on the ChatGPT web and will be rolled out to mobile and desktop apps within the month.

Announcing the launch of the feature, OpenAI wrote via a blog post,

“Today we’re launching deep research in ChatGPT, a new agentic capability that conducts multi-step research on the internet for complex tasks. It accomplishes in tens of minutes what would take a human many hours. Deep research is OpenAl’s next agent that can do work for you independently–you give it a prompt, and ChatGPT will find, analyze, and synthesize hundreds of online sources to create a comprehensive report at the level of a research analyst.

“Powered by a version of the upcoming Open Al o3 model that’s optimized for web browsing and data analysis, it leverages reasoning to search, interpret, and analyze massive amounts of text, images, and PDFs on the internet, pivoting as needed in reaction to information it encounters. The ability to synthesize knowledge is a prerequisite for creating new knowledge: For this reason, deep research marks a significant step toward our broader goal of developing AGI, which we have long envisioned as capable of producing novel scientific research”.

OpenAI disclosed that “Deep Research”, was launched to assist people who do intensive knowledge work in areas like finance, science, policy, and engineering and need thorough, precise, and reliable research. This new feature aims to streamline complex, time-intensive investigations by autonomously exploring and consolidating insights from across the web. Beyond professional use, Deep Research is also tailored for discerning shoppers who require hyper-personalized recommendations for major purchases such as cars, appliances, and furniture.

What sets Deep Research apart is its ability to provide fully documented outputs, complete with clear citations and a detailed summary of its reasoning process. This ensures transparency, making it easy for users to reference and verify information. The tool excels at uncovering niche, non-intuitive details that typically require browsing multiple sources, ultimately saving users significant time and effort. To achieve this level of sophistication, Deep Research was trained on real-world tasks that require web browsing and Python-based data analysis.

It builds on the reinforcement learning techniques used to develop OpenAl’s first reasoning model, o1, which has demonstrated exceptional capabilities in coding, mathematics, and other technical fields. While o1 excels at logical problem-solving, many real-world challenges involve sifting through vast amounts of information across different sources.

Deep Research bridges this gap, combining advanced reasoning with extensive contextual analysis to tackle complex questions effectively. In an internal evaluation of expert-level tasks across a range of areas, deep research was rated by domain experts to have automated multiple hours of difficult, manual investigation. The rollout of Deep Research gives OpenAI a significant competitive edge, especially in the light of competing AI models like DeepSeek.

Looking further ahead, the startup disclosed that it envisions agentic experiences coming together in ChatGPT for asynchronous, real-world research and execution. The combination of deep research, which can perform asynchronous online investigation, and Operator, which can take real-world action, will enable ChatGPT to carry out increasingly sophisticated tasks for users.

OpenAI has launched a new artificial intelligence tool called deep research, designed to assist professionals with complex research tasks in fields like finance, science and policy. Available with ChatGPT Pro for up to 100 queries per month, the AI agent competes with similar services from companies like Google, which recently debuted a feature with the same name. Meanwhile, OpenAI on Monday announced a new joint venture with SoftBank, starting with businesses in Japan.
