Mapping Your Ascent: The Essential Sections of a Dissertation

Every successful expedition requires a detailed map, and your dissertation is no different. Here’s a breakdown of the components that form the terrain of your academic path:

1. The Abstract: Your Dissertation in a Nutshell

Think of it like giving your friend the TL;DR version of your favorite movie – just the juicy bits without all the extra details. That’s essentially what an abstract does for your dissertation. It’s a peek into your research, highlighting the main points, methodology, and conclusions.

Think of it as a snapshot that gives the reader a quick preview of the masterpiece they’re about to explore. It’s typically written last, after you’ve completed the entire dissertation, allowing you to capture the essence of your work in a clear and captivating way.

2. Introduction: Setting the Stage

Picture this: your introduction is the movie trailer for your dissertation. It’s got to grab the audience’s attention and make them want to see the whole thing! This is where you introduce your topic, get people excited about it, and give them a little taste of what’s to come.

And the star of this trailer? Your thesis statement! It’s the big reveal, the plot twist that everyone’s waiting for. A strong thesis statement tells everyone exactly what your main argument is and why it matters.

Make your introduction engaging and thought-provoking, piquing the reader’s curiosity and drawing them into your research.

3. Literature Review: A Conversation with the Experts

The literature review is where you engage in a dialogue with other scholars and researchers who have explored similar territories.

You’ll delve into relevant books, articles, and studies, critically analyzing their findings and demonstrating how they relate to your own research questions.

This section showcases your ability to

  • synthesize information;
  • identify key themes;
  • position your work within the broader academic conversation.

4. Methodology: Your Research Toolkit

Whether you conducted surveys, experiments, interviews, or analyzed existing data, it’s crucial to provide a clear and comprehensive account of your methodology. This shows your readers that your research is legit and they can trust your results. After all, your research must stand on solid ground.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by this step, it’s okay to seek guidance. You might even find yourself saying, “Help me write my dissertation methodology! I need to make sure it’s clear and convincing.”

Don’t worry; there are resources and support systems like Write Papers service and similar platforms available to help you ace this crucial section.

5. Results: Showcasing Your Discoveries

You’ve gathered and analyzed your data meticulously; now it’s time to share your findings. The results section is like an exhibition where you present your discoveries in a clear and organized manner. Spice things up with tables, charts, and graphs that bring your data to life.

Remember, this section focuses on presenting the raw data without interpretation or discussion – you’ll have the opportunity to delve deeper into the meaning of your findings in the next section.

6. Discussion: Interpreting the Landscape

Now that you’ve presented your findings, it’s time to put on your explorer’s hat and analyze the significance of your discoveries. The discussion section is where you connect the dots, relating your results back to your thesis statement and the broader research context.

It’s your chance to show off your brainpower and add your own piece to the puzzle of academic knowledge.

7. Conclusion: Reaching the Summit

You’ve conquered the challenging terrain of research, and now you stand at the summit of your dissertation. In the conclusion, it’s time to:

  • Hit the replay button. Briefly remind everyone of your most important findings.
  • Bring back the star. Restate your thesis statement, but this time, it’s backed up by all the awesome research you did.
  • Keep it real. Mention any limitations or things you couldn’t cover in your study. (No research is perfect, after all!)

This is also an opportunity to look ahead, suggesting avenues for future research.

8. Bibliography: Honoring Your Fellow Explorers

No expedition is complete without acknowledging the contributions of those who came before you. The bibliography is your tribute to the researchers and scholars whose work informed your own.

It’s a super-organized list of every single book, article, or website you mentioned in your dissertation. Just make sure you follow your school’s rules for how to list everything – they can be a bit picky about that!

Embrace the Challenge and Enjoy the View!

From the abstract all the way to the bibliography, you’re now equipped with the knowledge to structure your dissertation like a pro. But hey, even with the best map and compass, sometimes you just need someone to point you in the right direction.

If you ever hit a wall and find yourself thinking, “Ugh, I just want to scream write my dissertation and be done with it!”, remember it’s okay to ask for help.

Whether you lean on your professors or classmates or even explore professional writing services, there’s no shame in seeking support. Before you know it, you’ll be standing on that summit with your dissertation in hand, feeling like the academic superstar you truly are!

OpenAI Says It Found Evidence DeepSeek Stole its AI Model

0

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is investigating whether Chinese AI startup DeepSeek used its advanced AI models without authorization to train a competing open-source model.

The DeepSeek breakthrough, which has sent ripples through the global tech market, now has implications for intellectual property protection and national security.

The controversy stems from allegations that DeepSeek may have leveraged a method called “distillation”—a technique where a smaller AI model is trained using outputs generated by a more advanced system. OpenAI told the Financial Times that it had uncovered evidence suggesting DeepSeek may have accessed its model’s outputs to improve its own AI system.

While OpenAI has not provided full details, concerns are growing that DeepSeek might have used OpenAI’s application programming interface (API) to extract valuable AI knowledge—potentially violating OpenAI’s terms of service.

According to reports from both the Financial Times and Bloomberg, OpenAI and its key backer, Microsoft, are currently investigating whether DeepSeek misused the API to engage in unauthorized model training. The companies had previously identified and blocked multiple accounts suspected of engaging in distillation, a move that was reportedly linked to DeepSeek’s operations.

The use of AI distillation presents a major challenge for leading AI firms, as it enables smaller players to rapidly develop competitive models without the same level of research investment. If DeepSeek did, in fact, extract knowledge from OpenAI’s models, it could mean that China has gained access to cutting-edge AI advancements that took years of research and billions of dollars to develop.

OpenAI’s Legal Battles and Its Next Move Against DeepSeek

While OpenAI has not yet stated what specific actions it will take if it establishes that DeepSeek copied its model, the company’s recent legal history provides a strong indication of how it might respond.

OpenAI is already embroiled in multiple lawsuits, including a major legal battle with the New York Times, which accuses the AI firm of using its content without permission to train ChatGPT. The case has sparked widespread debates about AI ethics, copyright infringement, and fair use in AI training.

Given OpenAI’s aggressive stance on intellectual property rights, it is highly likely that if DeepSeek is found guilty of using its models without authorization, the company could pursue legal action, potentially demanding financial damages or seeking to block DeepSeek’s access to key AI resources.

Moreover, OpenAI is also facing lawsuits from authors, publishers, and software developers, all of whom argue that the company scraped their content without consent to train its generative AI models. The company has pushed back against some of these allegations, but the growing number of lawsuits indicates that OpenAI is willing to fight aggressively to protect its proprietary technology.

If OpenAI can prove that DeepSeek violated its API terms or engaged in unauthorized distillation, the company might seek a legal injunction to halt the use of DeepSeek’s AI models, arguing that they were developed using unfair methods. This could lead to a major legal confrontation between a U.S. tech giant and a rising Chinese AI firm.

The U.S. Government Steps In Over National Security Concerns

The DeepSeek controversy has now caught the attention of the White House, adding another layer to the escalating tensions between the U.S. and China in AI development. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the National Security Council (NSC) is actively reviewing the matter, citing concerns over intellectual property theft and the potential national security risks associated with foreign AI advancements.

“This is a wake-up call to the American AI industry,” Leavitt said, emphasizing that leading AI models represent a strategic advantage for the U.S. and must be protected from unauthorized access and exploitation.

The U.S. government has already been taking steps to limit China’s access to advanced semiconductor technology, including imposing strict export controls on high-performance AI chips from companies like NVIDIA. The growing concerns over AI distillation and model theft may lead to even tighter restrictions on AI knowledge-sharing and cross-border tech collaborations.

DeepSeek’s rapid success and its suspected ties to OpenAI’s proprietary models highlight a larger trend in the AI arms race between the U.S. and China. The two nations are competing fiercely in the development of next-generation AI, with both governments investing billions in research and imposing restrictions to protect their technological advantages.

China has ambitious AI development goals, with companies like Baidu, Alibaba, and DeepSeek working to build AI models that can rival OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic. If DeepSeek is found to have extracted knowledge from OpenAI’s systems, it would raise questions about China’s ability to fast-track AI development by leveraging U.S. innovations—a scenario that could further escalate trade tensions between Washington and Beijing.

In the coming months, industry experts expect OpenAI and other leading AI firms to implement tighter security measures, including more robust tracking of API usage, encryption of AI model outputs, and stricter licensing agreements. Meanwhile, U.S. regulators may push for more oversight of foreign AI firms that attempt to compete with American companies.

Where To Focus on AI Journey for Most Companies [video] – Ndubuisi Ekekwe

1

Where should your company focus on the AI journey? I explain in this video. There are three core levels in this fledgling AI era: foundation model (FM), large language models (LLMs) and the generative AI (GenAI) levels. The FM and LLMs are to the world what Amazon AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructures are to cloud-anchored companies. In other words, we expect companies like OpenAI, Google Gemini and DeepSeek to become the infrastructure upon which the AI applications would be built when it comes to models.

This means that just as in the world of AWS, Google Cloud and Azure, where we also have Flutterwave, Affirm, and Tekedia, there is a huge opportunity to build the apps of the AI era. Those apps of the AI era is what Tekedia Capital is focusing on in Africa since only few will win the FM and LLMs levels at scale, but every aspect of our existence will be transformed by GenAIs.

The opportunities at the GenAI level are largely limitless as differentiations can be created around language, geography, industry, etc. You have the firmware, the operating system and the apps in the Windows age. In this AI age, you will have FM, LLMs and the GenAI. More opportunities remain for most at the GenAI level.

At the FM and LLMs levels, companies like OpenAI and DeepSeek will have to deal with performance improvements across many domains. And the winner at the FM level may not be more than a dozen companies globally. At the LLM level, you will have sector domain winners but those winners will also do well at the GenAL level. So, largely, from banking to healthcare services, some will be at the LLM level while a majority of companies will find opportunities at the GenAI level.

Of course, like the oil & gas industry, the FM are the upstream operators while the GenAI is your downstream. More players will be at the downstream and the value derivable very limited, but that does not mean you cannot capture value therein as there are many great oil trading and trading companies even as we have the upstream players like Shell and ExxonMobil.

In this video, I explain more while explaining positioning with a smiling curve.

In summary, do not be too fixated on those FMs but explore how the GenAIs can drive product differentiation and innovation in your company.

Yes, besides spending time on FMs like DeepSeek and OpenAI, think about GenAIs and opportunities in your market. Most FMs will go bankrupt since only a few will thrive. But we have GenAIs to help us improve our businesses.

Focus more on what you can do with generative AI in your business instead of spending days discussing the battle among OpenAI, DeepSeek, etc foundation models. Most of those things will not matter because the Western World has accepted that in the cloud infrastructure, we can live with Amazon AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure. So, when everything is done, we will wait for them at the GenAI level

A “foundation model” is a broad category of large-scale AI models capable of handling various data types like text, images, and audio, while a “Large Language Model (LLM)” is a specific type of foundation model focused solely on processing and generating human language, making it better suited for tasks like text generation and translation, whereas a foundation model can be adapted to a wider range of applications across different data modalitie

Job Hunting Doesn’t Have to Be Hard: Easy Tips for Finding Your Next Opportunity

0

Searching for a new job can often feel like a daunting, complex task. However, adopting the right strategies can turn this endeavor into a more straightforward process. Think of job hunting as a game where you need the right tools to win. This article presents effective tips designed to simplify your job hunting, positioning you for success in securing your next job opportunity.

Firstly, you need a good foundation; a well-structured curriculum vitae (CV), or a resume. A CV is an important tool in job hunting, serving as your personal sales pitch. It offers potential employers an initial glimpse into your academic and professional qualifications. You can build a CV with ease using various online tools and templates tailored for different industries and roles. The key is to customize it to showcase your unique skills and experiences relevant to the job you’re applying for.

###Research is Key

Doing thorough research on potential employers and industries is another crucial step in job hunting. This provides valuable insight into the company culture, existing roles, key responsibilities, and potential growth opportunities. Leveraging platforms like LinkedIn and Glassdoor can provide initial research leads. Subsequently, networking with current or former employees of your target companies can offer a deeper understanding, solidifying your decision to apply.

###Networking and Mentorship

Building strong professional relationships is an important aspect of job hunting. Such networks can open up opportunities that may not be publicly advertised. Attend industry conferences, career fairs, and networking events. LinkedIn is also a powerful platform for networking. Remember to maintain the relationships by keeping in touch regularly.

Additionally, mentors can provide invaluable guidance based on their experience in the industry. They can assist in identifying suitable opportunities, offer advice on improving CVs, and even provide recommendations to potential employers.

###Leverage Social Media

Social media is no longer just for connecting with friends and sharing personal updates. Today, it’s a key player in the job-hunting arena. Sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, and even Twitter can offer job listings, networking opportunities, and more. Make sure your social media profiles are professional and updated, as employers often use them for preliminary candidate screenings.

###Consider Temporary Positions or Internships

If you’re starting out or looking to change industries, consider temporary positions, internships, or even volunteering. These engagements not only offer real-world work experience but also provide opportunities to establish professional connections. They may also lead to permanent roles within the organization.

###Refine Your Interview Skills

Applying for jobs and submitting CVs is just a part of the job-hunting process. Once you receive a call for an interview, it’s time to sell yourself. Practice common interview questions and review your responses to ensure they align with the job requirements. Remember, an interview is not only for the company to evaluate you, but also for you to assess if the company is a good fit for you.

###Stay Positive and Keep Perspective

Finally, job hunting can be taxing and, at times, could seemingly lead to a dead end. Every application or interview that doesn’t convert may feel like a setback. However, it’s essential to keep perspective. View every rejection as an opportunity to learn and improve your approach. Treat your job hunt as a journey, not a race.

In conclusion, whilst job hunting can be challenging, it doesn’t necessarily have to be hard. Building a standout CV, doing thorough research, networking, leveraging social media, considering temporary positions, refining interview skills, and maintaining a positive attitude can significantly simplify the process. Happy hunting!
